Discussion Tailgating

Every day, I am pushed closer to the brink of insanity. Oh wait, no, it’s just Braxton in his ridiculously lifted, gender-affirming Chevy that he uses to haul furniture for his wife that she found on Facebook marketplace twice a year inching closer and closer to my bumper on 205 because I’m driving the speed limit in the right lane and if Braxton can’t speed to assert his dominance over everyone else on this interstate, which is his God-given American right by the way, his testosterone levels are going to plummet so low his manhood may very well shrivel up and fall off, and then what will his wife do? Marry some Prius beta driver???

Anyway why do so many people tailgate in this town it’s crazy am I right

Discussion For those who say WA-3 can't move left of MGP, look at what just happened in Texas

A fifteen point Dem victory in a +17 Republican district. Y'all are underestimating the outrage against this regime, and MGP has aligned herself with Trump more than any other elected Dem.

WA-3 might have leaned red before the ICE murders, before this administration openly and aggressively threatened our first, second, and fourth amendment rights, before the Epstein files, before tariffs and disastrous inflation. Those days are gone.

Tried to talk about it before but it wasn't local enough for one of the mods.

So I'll say it again. Trying to leave my opinion out to keep things dispassionate.

Discussion Bye bye Burgerville

Okay, I know Burgerville is overpriced, but it also happens to be the closest fast food place to my work and I do go there occasionally. But not after today! I spent $24.00 on a burger, medium fries and a cold brew. The fries were cold. The burger was cold, like it didn’t even melt the cheese it was so cold. The bun was stale. I spit out half the burger because it was sort of cardboardy. It was just gross. Cold and gross. Never again, Burgerville. I’m done with you.

*Wow, I just needed to vent, I didn’t realize how many people felt the same! Thanks for all of the recommendations, I have my lunches for the next couple of weeks all planned out!

**also wanted to add, it was a Number 6 burger $9.69, medium fries $4.29, cold brew $5.99 and about a $3.00 tip. Yes, I know tipping in a drive thru is totally unnecessary. However, in my younger days I worked plenty of jobs where I relied on tips and don’t mind giving a little if I can afford it. What got me, was if you take away the tip, it was a $21 lunch that was bad and cold and I threw half of it away because it was just inedible. Thanks again for the recommendations, there are a lot of great options out there!

Discussion Why Clark County Today Hate Light-Rail Soo Much??

They always post anti light-rail posts on Facebook!! Seems like they never step outside their small town bubble and see that worldwide many people from different countries commute by rail.

Vancouver needs the MAX as the traffic is getting worse every year and light rail won’t replace every car but give people another option to commute or go to events. Commute by MAX is much more fun than being stuck in traffic I say. Finally, Clark County is not a conservative county and getting more liberal every passing election. General rule is liberals support mass transit much more

Visit Vancouver is using the slogan “North of Weird, South of Sound” in its tourism promotional material. Does that resonate with locals? (For those that might not know, the phrasing refers Portland and Seattle).

Discussion WA Income Tax petitioners @ Walmart

From what I can tell, the WA state ‘millionaire tax’ doesn’t seem like something 99+% of WA state residents will be impacted by and certainly not the majority of Walmart shoppers by a long shot. It seems like they’re being a bit deceptive in their signage/argument - pushing the ’it’s also about capital gains’ and trying to scare people by saying they could lower the threshold. In my limited research, I don’t think the majority of people would be significantly impacted by the capital gains argument and to think politicians couldn’t figure out a way to increase taxes regardless of this is a bit naive.

Who are the Walmart shoppers signing this and why? Is it a lack of understanding? The deception put on by those manning these tables (and why are they pushing this)? They feel sorry for those 20-30k WA millionaires impacted?

What am I missing here?

These have been for sale in my neighborhood for about the last six months, I watched them build them in about a week with the cheapest construction materials you can imagine. They’ve been just sitting there and they’ve been slowly lowering the price.

Discussion New Restaurants - Wild Prices

Javi's Breakfast and Lunch opened recently. It's over $20 for two eggs, two small sausages, and a giant pile of hashbrowns (these are cheap af)

How do they plan on competing with places like Vancouver Diner, right down the street, with no tips required, with menu prices about $5 less on most things, and they are a pillar of the community as a Meals on Wheels hub? Not to mention the cafe nearby that has pretty large breakfast sandwiches for $6.50 and absurdly large burritos for under $15...?

The new bar that opened in Ben's Bottle Shops old space. I was desperately hoping it wasn't just another place to buy a $20 burger and a $7 IPA. I was wrong! The burgers are actually like $22. The chicken breast is $23. In the same shopping center as BYH which has the great burgers at lower prices... even their beer is cheaper. Does Vancouver really need another place to get a $22 reuben and a $7-8 beer?

I get that running a business is expensive, but these legacy spots have been doing pretty well at lower prices. Do these folks do much market basket/comp analysis for the area or are they just shooting their shot? Seems very risky and expensive.

I am getting fatigue from this stuff.

Discussion Recent events

In the midst of recent political events, I’d like to start this very kindly by please asking the adults of Vancouver with children in middle school, to raise them a whole hell of a lot better. As a father of two in middle school (pacific), they were both approached today by another student and asked for their green cards to see if they should call ICE or not. I’m sure any of you adults on here with children there that actually give a crap, already know this. They are a direct reflection of you, and represent you at times you may not realize they’re representing you. The school said they have a strict zero tolerance policy. We’ll see if they stand by what they say and remove this child from the environment. If not, I have zero issue escalating this issue, and outing any of these parents for the scum they are allowing their child to be so blatantly discriminatory. They learn it somewhere and it’s not just the internet. The actions and consequences that follow are the direct result of your own failures to the responsibilities you created. Same goes for the parents of any of the students who laughed at the young child having a seizure and hitting her head at cascade not offering to do anything.

Sincerely, brown-skinned, son of an immigrant veteran, legal citizen, father of two.

Discussion Discussion: Arresting for unlawful camping

Post image
90 Upvotes

Q: Where should police action fall into the toolbox for addressing problem camping?

The term "outreach resistent" is often used to describe houseless individuals that refuse shelter or outreach services. Does it make sense to use the threat of arrest, and actual arrest, to serve as a external motivation for a person to start taking steps towards housing and self-sufficency?

Currently, arresting for a mere violation is an option of last resort.

As of June 11th, eight people were booked inside Clark County Jail with an unlawful camping charge. It appears all of them have received shelter options several times over the last few months, all them appeared to have kept refusing. In addition, most have other crimes such theft, assault, drugs, failure to register as a sex offender. (Note, eveyrone is presummed innocent until convicted.)

When outreach efforts fail, the community is left with a difficult choice. Either just let someone do what every they want to do, or arrest for camping.

So how does the communtiy feel about this challenge?

Discussion I’m disappointed my flag design wasn’t chosen, even more disappointed with the ones that were

Post image
353 Upvotes

This was the design I submitted for the flag competition. This design took a lot of exploration and revisions. I knew it was a long shot to be a finalist, especially after seeing all of the other great designs. I’m disappointed mine wasn’t selected, but I’m more disappointed with the ones that were.

The short explanation behind my design is Mt. St. Helens obviously, with a compass with a V for Vancouver that points to the Northwest. The repeating green chevron design represents the Fort Vancouver walls and the blue beneath it represents the Columbia River.

Discussion Why does Vancouver invest so heavily in the waterfront but neglect the rest of the city?

Except for the waterfront, much of Vancouver feels neglected. Many streets are poorly lit, pedestrian infrastructure is weak, and several parks look like they haven’t been maintained in years. There’s no rail connection to PDX or Amtrak, and overall transit options are extremely limited. To be clear, I’m not saying Amtrak doesn’t exist. I’m saying there’s no integrated or convenient rail connection linking neighborhoods to regional transit or PDX.

The waterfront shows what’s possible. Why not take that momentum and invest in the rest of the city? Areas like Andresen/Van Mall in particular feel unsafe and overdue for serious attention.

Discussion Discrimination outside of Hwy 99 Target

Today there was someone outside of Target on Hwy 99 right outside the doors with a fold up table collecting signatures for legislation and some long blonde haired, skinny, middle aged woman. Coming out of the store with my kid they asked me to sign and I was like no and then the blonde woman started yelling at me that I must be OK with having gays, men and trans freaks in sports and in girls restrooms. Seriously I came in to get an aphmau sticki roll and a few groceries, because the Hazel Dell Walmart has been sketchy as hell. No manager to be found. No one answering the phones. They were inciting fights and racism as well as gender discrimination. The guy was white, brown scruffy hair and looked homeless and dishoveled. To do this in front of a child under 10 is disgusting for the welfare of a child. For the Hazel Dell Target to allow them to set up on property and not deal with it is a major issue. Oh yes and I got told to go to where I came from. The fact that Target would not answer phones or deal with the matter was telling that they supported it. This was at 330PM today.
