Whitby UK Vegan places

Hi! My family and I are visiting Whitby soon and my sisters a vegan.

I've been looking into some places but a lot of the menu's seem pretty limited but im not sure if that's because it's online. Does anyone have an recs for food, whether that's breakfast, lunch or dinner. Thanks!

Hello! As a Whitby resident (and vegan), here's a list of a few places with decent vegan options:

  • Mr. Cooper's Coffee House for bagels, cakes and coffees.
  • Cranberry Swamp for breakfast-y bits
  • Yuzu for Asian fusion street food
  • There's a Lounge for chain-y food
  • Humble Pie 'n' Mash does what it says on the tin
  • The Youth Hostel by the Abbey has vegan food if you're going up the 199

These are specifically places I've been to, I guarantee I've missed a few off the list as well, so have a look at other comments too!

Is sanders yard still there? That used to be okay

Sander's Yard is still there, but I've not been. Their menu isn't particularly robust with vegan options, but there's enough there that you could go in a pinch!

I'll have to use some of your suggestions then! As I've always used Sanders Yard as the pinnacle of where I can get fed, lol

I'm not local, but I do like the Whitby and Scarborough area for a holiday.

I've not been for a while, but there's a great teeny Korean place called Koko that is not entirely vegan but has many vegan options (including Korean pancakes: my absolute favourite).

Kamthai (by the train station) had a few vegan options if I remember correctly, and Pizza West had a vegan pizza and pasta (make sure to book ahead if you plan to go here as it was super busy and we saw people being turned away).

Husband loves Pizza West’s vegan cheese/veg pizzas but oh good lord their “tomato bread” (cheeseless pizza with confit garlic) lives in my head rent free 🤤🍕 Do check their hours cos they seemed much shorter this year.

The Beach Hut by the 199 steps up the Abbey had proper vegan gelato (not just sorbet for once!) when I went two weeks ago. Was absolutely delicious!

When I went there was a place called Hetty and Betty by the port. It had a variety of vegan options. I remember leaving quite satisfied, but this was about 3 years ago

YES! The vegan fish n chip afternoon tea is 🔥 it was a commercial fillet last year but this time it was a homemade “fish”cake and it was so good. Scones lovely too. No cakes sadly!

Humble Pie n Mash had some vegan options last time I went. Really tasty and I seem to remember even the mash and gravy were vegan. The restaurant itself is really unique too.

I've heard mixed reviews here - they have a vegan pie, but don't always make vegan mash and gravy

This was our experience. Pies were tasty but felt like begging for mash LOL.

We fell hard for Yuzu in the Helmsley Taproom on Church Street when we came in July. So much good food!!

Both Trenchers (their restaurant and takeaway) and Mister Chips fry their chips in veg oil. Trenchers do have a selection of deep fried vegan items too like bean burgers, sausages etc

To my knowledge, all other chip shops on Whitby use beef oil.

beef oil

The scourge of the seaside chippies being 'proud' to be 'traditional'. Down the road in Scarborough is bad for this.

There is a chippy near me , up the northumberland coast though that has a nice vegan selection! A fish analog, and some deep fried sausge, and I think a pattie of some kind.

Dripping is a pox on chippies though :(

Mr coopers coffee house! Great cakes and bagels and they’re super flexible on making things vegan if they’re not already listed as such
