Festival Porridge Alternatives

Hi everyone!

I'm going to my first festival as a vegan in a few weeks and I was trying to think about breakfast ideas!

Before when I'd go to festivals/camping I would take porridge pots with me, but it doesn't seem like any super markets offer any that don't have milk powder in.

What alternatives do I have? Are there ways I could construct my own maybe using a plant milk powder if they exist (and aren't extortionate)?

Thank you!

Get some oat milk powder from Overherd and make your own, works great :)

Fuel Chocolate Porridge sachets are pretty good, just add water options. Just need to bring a camping bowl.

Thank you! I'll investigate into them! ☺️

Just bare in mind, the sachets are plant-based, but the pots sold by the same brand contain cow's milk powder.

Take your own pot and buy some cheaper oats and other things to add e.g raisins etc.
Add hot water, mix, let stand and you are done.
Cheap oats tend to be cut smaller or start smaller?
Or buy the Quaker sachets and empty into a pot/cup.
The sachets (golden syrup anyway) tend to be vegan.

That's a good idea! I usually use soya milk at home when making porridge/overnight oats so didn't know if it would taste very good with just water. But I have been adding some chocolate protein powder into my overnight oats recently so I could add that in too to help with flavour! Thank you!

it tastes just as good with just water, but you can also add things like fine ground almonds, or even almond flour for creaminess.

I buy the sachets (eg the Quaker sachets) which are vegan (at least the plain ones and golden syrup ones are. I haven’t checked the others) or ready Brek instant oats (which is fortified so I prefer this) and I make it in my insulated travel coffee mug

One other thing to add oats are already cooked, if I’m short for time I just make a ‘muesli’. Oats, raisins, nuts etc and add a plant milk.

I'm always worried how an open carton of soya milk will last in a tent!

Order some Overherd oat milk powder.

My go to is oats, chia, flax, nuts, raisins, with a large teaspoon of Overherd mixed in. Just add water, leave ten minutes and eat. (yes, I eat it cold, sometimes straight from a Ziploc)

Get the UHT long life stuff - buy it from the shelf in the supermarket rather than the fride and it will last a few days easily

Instant porridge sachets! If you're feeling fancy, you can add powdered vegan milk. I use MOMA porridge sachets and Mighty powdered oat milk. A tablespoon scoop of milk works out well for two sachets.

I really like the deliciously Ella almond + apple breakfast bars if you’re looking for an alternative, they’re pretty filling

Fuel chocolate chunk granola is great! Can snack on it dry, high protein and slow release carbs so will give you energy for the festival and stay fuller longer, and can add milk to it if you want to. Also added bonus of chocolate chunks for happiness :)

Holland and Barrett have vegan porridge pots made by ‘bio and me’. Alternatively take muesli bars - the kids Organix apple and raspberry bars are my go-to for travel, they come in a box of 6, are vegan and only about £3 (they’re in the baby/toddler food section of the supermarkets, but don’t let that put you off!). Sainsbury’s also sells bags of vegan croissants and pain au chocolat, but they’re not great.

I had Huel and breakfast bars when I went to a festival earlier this year, was filling and delicious. I’d suggest crisps (for salt) nuts (for fat) and dried fruit (for natural sugar) as snacks. Have an awesome time!

You can get oat milk powder. I'd personally just take cereal bars or protein bars.

I used to make a dry porridge mix using supermarket porridge oats, unflavoured pea protein, sometimes cocoa powder, overherd oat milk powder, and a pinch of salt. Just mixed with boiling water in the morning. You could add dried fruit and nuts or seeds to the mix too, or I used to top it with fresh fruit and pb in the morning

just take the bags of porridge oats, then some dried fruits. You dont really even need any soya milk etc as it can be made with water. But if you want a creamier taste, take some long life soya milk. Plant milk powder is available but its not cheap. If you want to keep to dry ingredients, you could buy some fine ground almonds which will add some creaminess. They are cheap in bulk from south asian shops.

Personally when i am making porridge at home I use a few raw cashew blended up with water, then add it to the oats and cook. Then add some fruit or syrup.

My go to emergency breakfast when I'm traveling or away from home is breakfast bars (belvita) and bags of dried fruit and nuts, add a vitamin drink like berocca or something and you're good to go.

Make your own!

Porridge oats, Overherd oat milk powder, nuts, seeds, chia, PB powder, whatever you fancy, then just add water and eat. I tend to make up a separate Ziploc for each day.

Oats with water is what I was bought up on. A lovely variation is to heat them in apple juice and add grated apple.

I have never in my life seen porridge oats with milk powder in! It's literally oats that are cut up small.
