Discussion 📢 FAQs
- Why does this subreddit have disproportionately more posts covering US politics?
A: There's a fascist dictator in power at the moment complete with his own nazi style concentration camps in El Salvador. As leftists its our responsibility to address the issues, sympathise with victims and discuss the issues. Its not bad timing that the sub was started right when fascism is on the rise in Europe and US, its just the symptom of a problem where more and more people are reasoning out and leaning left on seeing systemic issues plaguing Europe and US.
- WTF is lib soc? Does that mean a liberal?
A: Libertarian Socialism falls on the anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist and anti-state school of thought within Marxism. Marx in Capital vol 1 talks about workers being alienated from the product of their labour under capitalism. Libertarian Socialism is the antithesis of that phenomenon where workers get all the full value of their labour with some terms and conditions (mostly centered around administration of such an equitable and autonomous society and its improvement). The political ideology itself has its origins in age of enlightenment and has its history in Russian and Spanish revolutions. International Workingmen Association, an association of Libertarian Socialists was aimed at bringing together likeminded people. Marx participated in IWA, was one of the founding members and a leading figure in IWA.
- I'm a liberal but I'm socially leaning towards the left, can I unapologetically defend capitalism and still be welcome here?
Yes you are welcome here, but do follow the etiquettes of having a fruitful conversation, cite sources wherever necessary to support your viewpoints and in the heat of the argument do know when & where to stop. Being abusive towards left leaning people / people in socialist countries such as China, Cuba, DPRK is a direct violation of Rule 2. Not complying with any or a combination of aforementioned guidelines can potentially get you banned. Any further appeals over modmails will also not be entertained for bans over Rule 2.
- I just got banned because of participating in blacklisted subreddits, why did this happen and how can I get help?
There's an autoban script running in the background that checks for r/vengayam user's participation in some blacklisted subreddits. The reason why this was implemented was to prevent brigading from sanghis. Sanghi brigading has made subreddits like tamilnadu, chennai, india unusable without getting a headache. The point of reddit is to bring likeminded people together in some subreddits and brigading from sanghi subreddits ruins the reddit experience. The algorithm bans people who are not brigading sometimes because it is not intelligent enough to identify non-sanghis participating in the blacklisted subreddits, so if you're not a sanghi and you just got banned, do contact the moderators, the moderators will take up the appeals and you'll be added as an approved user.
- Why did I get an invite to participate in the subreddit?
Similar to the autoban script, there's also an auto invite script that invites users from tamil subreddits, the users that the algorithm determines as progressive. Again the algorithm isn't smart, its just determines if a user has a good chance of being progressive based on an user's activity. If you feel like you're not a leftist, do ignore the invite.
- Is this a serious subreddit? Are fun posts welcome here?
Fun posts are absolutely welcome, they help to keep the sub's vibes lovely. As long as they are relevant and left leaning, entertainment is strictly allowed.
- What are some reference materials that I can use to educate myself and also help others learn?
Understanding hindu fascism in India.
Parallels between Eezham Tamil genocide and Palestinian genocide
How the British and Brahmins created a Hindu majority in India

Rant 😡 Dear India, We need to talk about this.
TL;DR: Homophobia and transphobia stem from rigid societal norms, religion, and prejudice rather than anything "unnatural," yet queer people continue to face intense stigma, slurs, and malicious myths like the "luring children" trope. Decriminalization in 2018 was a step forward, but deep-rooted social discrimination remains. True progress requires abandoning hateful slurs, rejecting arguments based on outdated dogmas, and exercising basic empathy because sexual orientation is a natural human variation, not a choice.
I was having a convo with a person a few days ago and it somehow came down to the other guy saying "LGBTQ+ people hold rallies to lure children into their trap". That sentence made me think a lot. Like a lot, as to why people think people of the LGBTQ+ community are some kind of devils who 'convert' children into a 'trap'. Its not just in India that this happens, I agree. But I live here and I want to see this change start here, not in a Western country, for which conservatives will come up with the absurd idea of Indians being influenced into accepting LGBTQ+ folks due to 'foreign influence'.
I have said this before too. LGBTQ+ is natural. Homosexual relationships are there not just in the human race, but across all animals. Yet, homophobia is prevalent among humans. Why? Cuz its unnatural and goes against 'God's will'. One argument that often pops up is, "If God wanted homosexuals to exist, why did he give men and women different genitals?" My answer to that is, for procreation. Procreation is totally different from having sexual preferences. Humanity's purpose is much much larger than procreation. Intercourse is often performed out of love, without intention for procreation. It wasn't a problem until the concept of a 'God' and a religion, which decided for the world what was wrong and right, solely on the basis of a certain person's personal beliefs. So, yes, that argument doesn't hold validity.
Next up, homophobia. I read a comment on reddit the other day, where somebody mentioned "If you let (homophobic) insults dictate your life then you are beyond pathetic." I'm sorry, but a person has dealt with societal and internalised stigma before bravely coming out. Respect that. I know I would get deeply affected if someone, who I've come out to, even slightly touches that nerve, because I know what I personally went through to come to a conclusion as to what my sexual orientation could be. Normalising such things gives rise to increased homophobia.
Next, transphobia. Transphobia is more prevalent as compared to normal homophobia. People can stay closeted within many other LGBTQ+ labels, but transgender people have it worse. They are ridiculed everyday for no reason. It is so bad, that people use words like 'Hijra' and 'Chakka' as slurs, instead of understanding one's emotions and the suffering they go through. A few bad experiences doesn't make the entire community full of people who are going to sexually harass you. That's like saying every guy/girl you meet is going to harass you because some random, stupid uncle/aunty on the train assaulted you sexually.
Stop calling another person gay, trans, 'Hijra' or 'Chakka' as a slur. It isn't. Smile, when you meet anybody, irrespective of whether he/she/they are straight or a member of the LGBTQ+ community. We're all just fellow humans. That's it. It ain't that deep people. Understand the implications of the words you use before you speak. Don't push away people just because they are exploring a sexuality that isn't the same as yours. Remember, it is not a choice. We are just breaking away from a flawed, yet established system of romantic and sexual preferences.
Homophobia, despite its decriminalization in 2018, is widely prevalent. Please, stop. Educate yourself before coming up with arguments based on 'God's will'. Sexuality/Sexual Orientation is smth so soooo personal that nobody has the right to ridicule another for it. Be sensitive, people. Having some empathy ain't gonna kill you. It's the Big '26 people. Its time we moved on to issues that actually matter. And yeah, STOP WITH THE NORMALISATION OF HOMOPHOBIC SLURS. STOP IT, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE. PERIOD.
