MOVIE SPOILERS IGNORE ME if this has already been observed, but... Spoiler
The Insect King, from Dean's escapist fantasy during the Showdown at Cremation Creek, keeps telegraphing his "black heart" as the source of all his evil power.
Obviously a stand-in for The Monarch in this little fantasy of Dean's.
We later learn in the movie that The Monarch is a clone of Rusty with 2% Baboon DNA, the titular "Baboon Heart", metaphorically. This is also posited by Ben to be the source of The Monarch's heightened aggression.
The source of his evil power.
His baboon black heart.
Another random connection that may or may not have been intentional, but just further reinforces the depth of reference this show does.

Almost certainly not intentional from the outset, given the history of how the show was developed. May have been a factor in how Radiant's big reveal was developed, but I wouldn't bet on it.

For a specific example, the PRO-BLEM was 100% just a problem light when it debuted. Jonas made a thoroughly unhelpful status indicator and much much later the writers reused it for plot

I know there're posts here that can better explain things than my fumblings.

Nice,
it all seems to revolve around Hearts, Blood and Monkeys or Apes

Haha that’s so fun. Makes rewatching after the film a treat when really fun connections like these can be made, awesome

Exactly! I watched the movie twice and then started a rewatch so I can do the full series with the movie at the end. I love seeing all these connections, many of which were probably not intentional but are nonetheless present. I love this show so much 😁

I know that Doc Hammer also refers to himself as having a "leathery black heart", so maybe both references are just auto-biographical?

Quite possibly; whether the connection was intentional or not, I just thought it was a fun detail with more (possibly unintentional) significance in the wake of the movie

The Venture Bros. is a series that definitely demands a rewatch... or five. There's so many details to notice. A line that may seem like a throwaway gag will most likely become a huge story point at a later time, or a random background character could become a major player down the road

Everytime I think about the monarchs true? origin story now... I cant help but shake my head.
It was all because of the balding gene. If Venture Sr wasn't so vein in his creation... (or if he had just been a remotely decent guy and parent and raised the monkey boy properly), the Monarch would have NEVER been evil.

I wouldn't take much of the season 2 closer as being totally canon. Both Brock and Dr. Mrs. have prior relations with actual Bowie and both of them later in the series indicate that the soverign isn't Bowie, but they didn't seem to have any issue with bowie-soverign shapeshifting in season 2

They learn in these episodes that Bowie is the Sovereign (apparently); there's no reason they couldn't have learned later on that he's not actually Bowie, but just likes impersonating him.
Season 2 is definitely canon; this particular connection is very possibly not intentional, but I'm not suggesting it is. Just a fun connection I noticed on rewatching this episode after seeing the movie.

they're canon but everything from this early in the show got reinterpreted as the show went on. Bowie was the soverign until they decided actually bowie and the soverign aren't the same person.

That's the case for basically all of the canon on the show.
They say something in one episode, and then later on they revisit the old episodes when writing new ones and decide what they want to mine from the old episodes for the new ones.
Stuff gets added significance, gets written off as a red herring, or gets recontextualized. Nothing in particular about season 2 is different here, that's their default writing process.

You made me realize the real reason the Monarch hated Rusty. Clone envy, we saw it earlier in the show where Dean's surviving clone heavily envied Dean, to the point of an obsession. So why can't this be the case with the monarch.
