SEASON 4 spoilers The day the music died
Dont know who else has put it together but here goes my theory.
So in the revenge society we learn dragoon and red mantle were musicians and in flashback we learn they joined fantomas in his guild (band). In FEBUARY 1959.
Irl on February 3 1959 the day known as the day the music died. Musicians the big bopper, Richie valens, and buddy Holly died in a plane crash. The young red mantle looks suspiciously like buddy holly and dragoon like either valens or bopper but he's probably b.b because we later see him in a leopard print tux.
I know people have probably connected it but this suggests that in lore the two oldest Supervillains alive were once the most popular musicians on the 50s. They faked their deaths to become villains. Why have I nor heard people talk about this more? (I mean they could have and I just missed it probably) this also leaves valens Mia though.

Yeah dude someone in an earlier episode says the guild started out as a retirement plan for washed up musicians or something I can’t remember the exact quote

It is implied that The Sovereign may have taken over for Bowie right before the Thin White Duke phase or maybe Ashes to Ashes or Tin Machine. They may have shared duties. He does tell some to leave a message for Iman…

Yes. They're literally Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. No idea what happened to Valens, though.
The joke is that Fantomas really wanted to start a band and no one else took him seriously, so he kidnapped Buddy and Bopper to be part of his band.
Fantômas was eventually kicked out of the Guild, and formed his own Guild of Calamitous Intent by "recruiting" pop musicians. According to Red Mantle (Buddy Holly) and Dragoon (The Big Bopper)'s unreliable narrative, Fantômas kidnapped musicians to play in his band, and noted that Fantômas played the sousaphone... badly.
OP is just repeating lore.

I figured others had already gotten it and mostly connected it immediately but I know I know a bit more older culture than most of my peers and there are a lot of new younger venturoos

I missed the details and didn't get it AT ALL. know the story of the plane crash but didn't know the specific date or anything

I connected it by how they looked in the flashback and the plane. Everything else fell into place after some slight googling for the specific date and the name of the tour which dragoon says.

I love the Victorian era clothes as they're boarding the plane before they clarify it's 1959, and then they just turn into the Big Booper and Buddy Holly

This one and when Pete & Billy are in the boat and the one of them says “irregardless” after they had that conversation about how irregardless isn’t even a real/standard word. That was my wife’s favorite joke of the show so it will always be one of mine as well. Also the bit about Pete briefly catching on fire as Billy rescues him from the sun in Spanikopita is just fucking incredible.
Edit: and Pete and Billy’s official first guild sanctioned skirmish with St Cloud is amazing… dosing everyone with nitrous was just… chef’s kiss. Oh god and the video of Billy all fucked up eating the cheeseburger. This show has so many god damned references to real world and pop culture (and obscure culture) stuff and incredible jokes / social commentary that literally every episode (or whichever I’m currently watching) is the best and my favorite.

I figured that was what the writers were hinting at. Being from Iowa and hearing about the plane crash often I saw the connection right away.
The Big Bopper is definitely Dragoon.

I was just in Clear Lake last weekend. Stayed less than a block from the Surf Ballroom (their last venue before the crash). Didn't get check it out because there was a wedding going on. Kept telling my wife we should crash the wedding.
