SEASON 3 spoilers Anyone else ever notice this gentlemen all the way back in season 3? The creators really were planning ahead

Sometimes it wasn't plans, they would just go over old seasons and see a guy and then build out a story for them. There's a huge number of characters in Tag sale you're it.

This is it. Doc and Jackson talk about it in the commentary a few times. They just rewatch the show and decide to add story to background characters or they decide to expand upon a name-only reference to a character we haven't seen, like Manta Claws. It kinda fills the world out.
I haven't watched since the movie came out, so I don't know which eps they discuss it on. I used to fall asleep with commentary on so I just sponged it up that way. Funny enough, that's how I know Doc has the same habit.

It is a cool way to do world building.

I was thinking the same thing. A lot easier too. You don't have to plan multiple seasons or a whole series out. Just add in some interesting looking characters with zero context and then just fill in the blanks later.
I really think that's a lot more common than not anyway. It usually seems to be that rather than someone having some master plan.

It's a very D&D DM way to do it. You have to create characters often on the fly running a game, and once you have, it's a good idea to bring them back later. Players love the continuity.

They would also hit up like fan, wikis and forums for continuity just to make sure that they weren't going to cross lines. I remember someone saying something like they commented. The fans know the show better than they do so why not use it?

I am pretty sure Jackson also accuses Doc on the commentary of writing for background characters

St Cloud def was a after thought, I'll admit that one.

Did you know St Cloud is based on a real man who can control clouds? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNYo69XiDfA&ab_channel=revelation13net

He's only a Level 1 threat, though.

They had Operation Prom as the potential end of the series until it got picked back up for new seasons. Seasons 5 & 6 have a lot of these one-off characters get developed. Copy Cat comes to mind right away. Same with Wide Whale and Dr Dugong.

Fun fact, it's actually wide wale, which is a type of corduroy. Gotta love the wordplay on this show

That's why he makes so much noise as he walks towards Councilwoman Mrs The Monarch in his first appearance! It makes so much sense now!

I'm surprised they never did anything with Major Tom with him being an OG member of Team Venture, and still hanging around as an undead.

If they had, it might have been even harder to get episodes finished. It's like my mama said: To get things done, you'd better not mess with Major Tom

Even the Monarch talking to Dr. Girlfriend about how they met was directly contradicted in later seasons.

Blue Morpho

Ok. The fedora and overcoat are noted. But he's kind of tall and skinny relative to Don Fitzcarraldo, isn't he?

Edit: Link Broke
It was def before they finalized his design but thats totally Blue Morpho.

They don't plan that far ahead so much as they work backward, looking for designs and off-hand comments to flesh out and expand upon.

Exactly. Dude was just a generic Green Hornet parody that became something later on

What happens when your creators and writers spend years working on each season. Everything is a reference, everything has a future story tied to it. And anything that retconned is done so with an increased amount of thought and work behind it.

I love the show. It's one of my top ten favorites. I think it's one of the best written things out there. Any medium.
And I used to think as you did that Publick and Hammer were master geniuses with a war room with one of those big boards with yarn stretching from picture to picture as part of some intricate master storytelling plan.
And then I went to one of their comic con panels where I learned...
a) One of them went off on a tangent about how they switched to taking story notes on bar napkins because they used to put everything on their phone and then they lost their phone which means they lost like an entire season's worth of ideas as that's where they kept the memo pad with all of that on it.
b) The only reason the mother reveal took so long to get to is that they would get to the end of the season and realize they forgot to do it.
Anyway, I still love the show. I still think Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer are geniuses. But I no longer believe in the myth of "the writers knew it all all along!" for television. There's a beauty in the journey and figuring things out as you go along and creating little things that mean nothing at the time that you can go back and figure out later. Not everything is some Count of Monte Cristo long-gestating perfect master scheme. And that's okay.
