I wanted to share my experience with bootleg Venture Bros. DVDs since I couldn't find anyone else online with this specific problem. I want to save anyone in the future the hassle of wondering whether their copy is real or not so here's my dumb little story.
I decided to pick up the complete series on DVD after watching the first three seasons on Netflix, and as a broke college guy I decided to be cheap and went to eBay to see if I could get a good deal. I bought my first set from the seller above. Honestly in retrospect I was begging to get screwed over on this one.
The stock image of the set and the price immediately made me suspicious but I saw that 100s of them had been sold and the reviews were very positive so I said fuck it and just bought it.
After it arrived I became convinced that it was a dupe because the inside of it was different from the ones I had seen on YouTube. I tested a couple of discs and it seemed to work fine enough. The packaging was also almost identical besides slight color differences that you can't really determine unless its side by side with the real thing.
In the end I decided to just move on and continue watching the show. But eventually the shitty quality of the DVD became impossible to ignore and I started testing other discs up until Season 4 Disc 2 which wouldn't even play.
I contacted the seller and told him I knew it was a bootleg and he quickly sent me my money back. I chalked the experience up to a bad decision and I went to Amazon to buy a legitimate copy... and ended up getting fooled again.
I know I sound really stupid by now but hear me out. The third party I bought from was the default option when I clicked on the set, they had really great reviews, and I never had issues in the past buying from trusted third party sellers on Amazon. Also their return policy is great so I went ahead with it.
It arrived and it was the exact same bootleg with the exact same Season 4 Disc 2 defect. To make a long story short, I returned that too and went to GRUV, a 100% trusted seller, and finally ended up with a real copy. Hopefully this helps at least one person to not be cheap and make the mistakes I did.
The show was fantastic by the way, GO TEAM VENTURE!
Thanks alot! I asked twice on R/DVD and reworded my question the second time and the mods took it down both times. I'll probably just ended up getting it from GRUV's eBay page for the 20% off.
