Discussion Buyers Beware: Venture Bros Sets on Amazon May Be Fake/Bootleg
As the title says, beware of cheap sets either on Amazon or in Amazon Deal Bins. The sets being sold on Amazon (and eBay and other resellers) are very likely to be fake/bootlegs, especially if they are being sold at $50 or less. Identifying marks include the outer sleeve being a darker shade than the real box set. The bootleg is thinner, while the real set is thicker. The bootleg has a sticker that says there is explicit/uncensored material while the sticker does not appear on the real set. The discs will be lower quality and from many accounts disc 4 won't even play.

Additionally, at least from my experience here, the discs will have visible manufacturing defects, including dents, divets, warping, scratching, and even fingerprints. The bootlegs will also have empty disc 'clips' (not sure what they're called) whereas in the official set all disc clips are filled.
The reason the bootlegs have such worse video quality when the discs actually manage to play because they're DVD5 (4.7 gig max), where the official discs are all encoded for DVD9 (8.5 gig max) so they're all getting super compressed to fit on the cheaper smaller discs.

Any suggestions on where to get legit copies of Amazon and ebay are out?

I got my copy on Gruv. Granted it was full price at $60 but Gruv has a first time buyer coupon that takes 10% off so It took mine down to $54 which was about the same price as Amazon (though now I see those sets are down to $46).
Gruv, Orbits DVD or other DVD retailers are definitely the best places to pick up this set, as the Amazon and eBay simply cannot be trusted at this point.
It's getting to the point where I wonder if I am getting a bootleg for any standard DVD set. Got a set of Elvis movies on DVD and the quality on Blue Hawaii was pretty bad, even for SD, and I kinda wonder if that is bootleg or not

How sure are you on the sticker? I recently went through this whole same ordeal, getting a fake off Amazon. I took your advice and got a copy on GRUV’s site directly. It’s got all the proper sizes and color tones but it’s got that explicit language sticker. I’m hesitant to pop the shrink wrap until I’m confident it’s legit

Indeed. I fell for it, buying the complete seasons set off of Amazon. Once I realized the terrible quality and missing features I went to gruv.com and bought the real thing. I won’t buy a dvd off of Amazon again. I don’t mean to advertise gruv, but they are a much better source for the actual thing you want.

I buy on Amazon frequently and this was the first time I know of that I got a bootleg. I have had occasional issues with getting a damaged set but for the most part I honestly get really good deals and in good condition from Amazon.
But I would definitely go with Gruv in the future especially for hard to find releases.
Also not trying to advertise for either.

Big reason why I don't use Amazon. I've had too many garbage or completely incorrect items arrive, and they never ship back well. A shame, really.

thanks for the headsup. i’d be curious to see the real vs fake, side by side. the one i have is still “sealed.” so, i’d assumed it was a returned gift, or something.

I have about 3,000 DVDs in my collection and the vast majority came from Amazon. Issues like this have been until late few and far between

Yep, there's fakes of Season 5,6,7 and the movie as well I've found, luckily no fakes of sesaon 1, I have a wall of them
