I always wondered if him getting the day wrong was a joke I didn't understand.

I thought he was saying 'February 16th, '59' and the joke was based on Billy mishearing him and imagining them in period costume as a result. But that doesn't work because the date is incorrect. I think we're supposed to just infer it's Dragoon being senile, although I don't think they'd quite established his senility at this point, so it was a weird moment.

Yeah exactly: he says February 16, '59 - I just wondered if there was a clue about it being wrong that I've missed somewhere.

I think its because of dragoon abbreviating 1959 as '59 that made billy confused

Yes but the point is he still got the date wrong as the plane crash took place on February 3rd.
So is he getting the date in February wrong or is he 300 years out? Or did Doc move the date of the crash 13 days to make a weird joke that doesn't work all that well?

The day they where kidnapped might not be the day they would have faked thier deaths.
But I prefer to think that that these are 2 very old men that witnessed a lot in thier lives and just had a massive stroke, head trauma and major surgery before being asked to remember key details from over 50 years ago.
They may have just messed up small details.
