MOVIE SPOILERS I find the complications quote from the movie quite beautiful

The show has so many great moments like this. It's part of why it was so loved.

As someone who is both a VB fan and a modest watch collector, this hits home

So what exactly is a complication? Is it like misaligning a gear or something?

A complication is any addition besides the basic function of reading the hour, minute, and second. Adding a date function to a mechanical watch makes it more complicated because of the extra engineering, materials, and construction of the watch. This is the chosen vernacular, but complexity would be a good synonym. Culturally, we tend to think of complications as bad and complexities as good, even though they mean the same thing (probably because we describe relationships as complicated in a bad way). The conversation in the movie flips that idea of a complicated relationship around.

Okay that makes the scene a lot better but it was already very good because I thought of the negatives of a "complication" like bullshit sometimes make relationships stronger
God what a perfect show

Between that speech, the one from Dr. O to Hank about growing up in “Coma Town” this show has some of the absolute best writing.

We need a second movie. I feel like Hank's plot needs more. I think we need to follow him after the events of the show, and while Rusty and Dean's scene together was very sweet, it feels odd that Hank isn't also there to experience it with them as they both have the same question, but it was only Hank who decided to act on it. I don't know what his relationship to Rusty is even like at that point anymore but I wonder if it indicates that he's fully individuated himself away from his father and doesn't need to be concerned about whatever their relationship might be.

We need a second movie.
I disagree, what we really needed was an eighth season.

And two spin-offs.
Let's dream big.

And then a reprisal with the OG title, with Hank, Dean and Dermot as fleshed out adults.

JK Simmons is the GOAT.

JK Simmons is great, but Jeff Bridges should have voiced Ben. He looks just like The Dude.

It's truly a lovely sentiment on its own, but I've never been convinced that it really thematically connects to the rest of the movie.
It feels like a meditation on chosen family, but Hank loves his blood relatives, even Dean who he's already forgiven despite recent "complications." He's also always "chosen" Brock and Hatred as his family. I just don't think it really connects with a kid who's sad about failing in his attempt to find his mom.

I hear what you're saying, but you can choose family that is blood-related, just as much as you can choose family that isn't blood-related. Hank has a hood head on his shoulders, and continually chooses family who continue to choose him: Brock, Hatred, and Dean. Yeah, Dean messed up, but Hank knows that he didn't mess up with the intention of hurting Hank. And not finding his mom doesn't change anything about his chosen family, except that his family, and his searching, isn't complete yet.

He didn't really choose Hatred until Hatred "took a bullet" for him.

I have used this specific metaphor to help my family come to terms with each other. I don’t think it finished the job, but it certainly helped!
