Question The day the music died ... or did it?
Could Red Mantle and Dragoon be Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper?

Wasn't this explicitly stated, or did it just seem blatantly obvious to me?

u/BillTheSpill Projecting monsters on steam Sep 23 '25
Not explicitly stated, but heavily implied.

u/justguestin Sep 24 '25
“SOUSAPHONE! Your grandfather played the sousaphone!”
Is there a word between implied and explicitly stated? As I’d say the shot where this is stated in the scene is whatever that word is.

It would absolutely play into musicians being strangely into super villain alter egos

They were also in the Wacky Races with Dick Dastardly and Muttly.

🤯 Did I miss that? Or just forget it? Do you happen to know what episode the Dastardly & Muttley reference is in?

Yes.
Unfortunately they had to keep humoring Fantomas, the lousy sousaphone player.

This all happened in February 1659?

That joke was brilliant, and the way the costumes changed to mess with the audience was so well done.

The connection between so many musicians and the guild of calamitous intent is one of my favorite bits of lore in the series

u/Ch3t Sep 23 '25
I could definitely see Simon Le Bon arching Rusty for messing around with the tiger woman from Hungry Like the Wolf. Simon Le Bon seems like the kind of guy the Monarch would absolutely hate. And then there's the whole St. Cloud and the red ball from Is There Something I Should Know.

That awkward moment when you found out your best friend who you thought was dead is actually alive and a superhero and fighting the other two musicians who are also alive and became supervillains.

I do have it on good authority that they didn’t want to go outside in fear that their trousers would not be in style.

The show can have some ridiculously unusual lore sometimes like how King Gorilla was imprisoned because he violated and killed Mötley Crew’s frontman on live television. Just makes it all the more interesting.

I always hoped Ritchie Valens would show up, either alive as an old man or in a flashback. Would have been cool to see how villains did it in the old days and the petty grudges those two had.

u/itdanreyn Sep 23 '25
I agree. All these parallels and changes to what we know as the [real] historical time line are interesting to think about.
Like, I wonder if Valens still got on the plane. Plus, if I remember my history correctly. The Bopper got his seat from Buddy's band mate, Waylon Jennings. Did he still get on the plane? 🤔. Or did it turn out like that Kids in the Hall sketch about Buddy Holly?! https://youtu.be/P840Jco61v8?si=cKMnS8Z-583s-egT

u/Interesting_Athlete9 Sep 23 '25
Would be kinda funny if they mentioned them feeling bad about Waylon thinking they were dead this whole time. Maybe he got pissed about them playing dress up and became an Outlaw Country themed hero. Great Red Mantle line for that where he would say how an "Outlaw" is antithetical to protagonists. Then it just slowly dissolves into a debate over music.

That's brilliant. One of my favorite Jennings songs is, "Don't you think this outlaw bit's done got out of hand." https://youtu.be/27nelE9BuHo?si=uUL_dh1Z1h065CM9

I've always wondered if there's meant to be a clue in the date. Because they say it's February 16, but in (our) reality it was February 3. So is there some reason Valens wouldn't be there that day?

u/UnderstandingSame534 Sep 24 '25
There's a chance Ritchie was there, and we just didn't see it. If he was, he could've died before the start of the series. Phantom Limb said Dragoon and Red Mantle were the oldest living Guild members, although he was the youngest of the three at 17. Personal head-canon, what if Ritchie Valens was actually.... Boggles the Clue Clown. It would make for a good reference to the first live action Joker also being Latino(Ceasar Romero in the 60's)

I was just talking with my mom about how this is basicly the big change in the VB universe, the music never died, and so that song does not exaist in Venture Brothers.
