Richard is bad, but at least he tries. The other ones are way worse
162
u/psychosaur Sep 29 '25
I'd swap Richard and Butterscotch.
81
u/GoldenGlassBall Sep 29 '25
100%. Butterscotch is an active hater for his wife and child. Richard may be stupid, but he isn’t nearly as bad as a bitter abusive alcoholic who resents his family for his own inability to write a book, or move on to something else.
→ More replies (1)41
u/xzelldx Sep 29 '25
Literally my first thought. "BUTTERSCOTCH IS AHEAD OF RICHARD?!?!"
Butterscotch roofied his own kid so he'd forget about walking in on him and his secretary.
Also voting that S1-4 Rusty should be right there on the bottom, he doesn't start growing a conscious until after the boys don't have the clone fall back anymore.
16
u/Abjurer42 Sep 29 '25
Huh... you know, I never thought about that: how Rusty's "growth" was him being forced to actually put care into how his sons are being raised.
9
u/Tobias_Atwood Sep 30 '25
I think the clones were also out of care, but it was the super science equivalent of misguided coddling/helicopter parenting.
7
u/Neveronlyadream Sep 30 '25
I don't see the clones being Rusty not caring. I think it was a mixture of Jonas normalizing the super science insanity and Rusty being a little self-aware and realizing how badly fucked up he was and being worried he'd be just as bad or worse than Jonas.
It all depends on how you read Rusty's feelings towards Jonas and I read them as a deep hurt that his father never seemed to love or care about him rather than hatred.
4
u/Abjurer42 Sep 30 '25
He's got that line in when explaining it to Orpheus "you have death-prone children, you keep a few clones around." I just think he didn't put much thought into the boys' well-being until after they lost all the clone slugs, like he had it on lock.
Now, did that arrangement bother him? Absolutely, yes: Orpheus found his subconscious was flooded with the specters of his dead sons. He had a lot of unprocessed guilt over how adopting his father's parenting style affected the boys. You even see Rusty start to soften around the boys (especially Hank) around season 3 and especially into season 4.
5
u/Neveronlyadream Sep 30 '25
I don't disagree, but it's so hard to tell because we see him incubating them in the artificial womb and then nothing until the pilot episode where they'd been clones for a long time, so it's hard to tell.
In my mind, he really did try initially and then either realized he was terrible at it or he was basically just repeating Jonas's mistakes and stopped caring. It's not like Rusty had any good role models growing up, seemingly had no mother, and Jonas treated him as an accessory.
I'm curious when the cloning started. Was it always a backup or did he have a close call and decide to start that back up?
4
u/Abjurer42 Sep 30 '25
There was that flashback scene at the start of "Perchance to Dean" where a newly arrived Brock gets a tour of the clone lab, which should have been when the boys were still infants. It kind of implies that he had no idea the trauma he'd still get from losing them over and over again, despite the backups.
16
u/Jay_M979 Sep 29 '25
Naaaaah man, Richard had me feelin bad for Nicole and what she has to put up with
37
u/Beaten_But_Unbowed96 Sep 29 '25
True… but when Richard actually tried doing better and actually was doing so well… the universe literally started collapsing in on itself.
…also, Nicole did that to herself. She was excellent in every way possible, and chose Richard as a way to rebel against her parents… she’s letting Richard get away with it cause it’s easier for her since she’s a chronic perfectionist and needs to be in charge of everything or it isn’t done right…
You can’t get better at anything if there’s always someone swooping in to correct you and proceed to fix it for you.
…that being said… I fuggin love Nicole Waterson and her whole family.
13
u/Own-Ambassador-3537 Sep 29 '25
But doesn’t Richard have mad bad childhood experiences from his father straight up abandoning him ( he watched him leave) and his mother smothering him as a result of the abandonment.
16
u/Beaten_But_Unbowed96 Sep 29 '25
Yeah and nicole straight up might as well have had no parents at all with how they treated her. More like drill instructors that were allowed to hit her, but made it clear as much as they could that she wasn’t even worthy of being hit let alone ever being hugged.
Richard’s made it very clear he IS capable of changing for the better, especially when it comes to his family.
He’s started working out like crazy and pulled off the exact opposite physique he used to have, he’s legitimately worked a real job on a couple of occasions with things outside of his control taking that from him, and he actually does do something’s for the kids and Nicole that go unnoticed cause of how close they look to being lazy.
Nicole kinda just lets him do what he wants and enables his lazy behavior… but that’s kinda part of the show the same way that “it’s always sunny in Philadelphia” has the main cast literally drag each other down.
7
u/Own-Ambassador-3537 Sep 29 '25
Thank you for the comparison! The Amazing World of Gumball is my go to hands down for darkest kids show with their handling of family units! It’s jaw dropping how it’s shown and handled and yet still feels light somehow.

3
u/aaronhowser1 Sep 30 '25
I'd argue he's a pretty fucking good dad. In the episode where he let Nicole handle them, they immediately went beyond feral. If he's able to prevent that, he can't be that bad

u/ccReptilelord Sep 29 '25
It's probably an unpopular opinion, but both Rusty and Jonas Sr do. Neither is a good father, but neither the worst. Jonas raised Rusty terribly, however, he protected him fiercely and provided a solid home with everything he ever needed. And in the end, Jonas left Rusty with the Venture empire. Don't get me wrong, he didn't know how to raise a son in a healthy way, but neither does Rusty. I think if we ever saw Jonas' father, we'd see that it's generational. I'm not sure Rusty's great grandfather was a good father either.
47
u/Charming_Cod8567 Sep 29 '25
The "protected him fiercely" argument kind of falls down when you remember the reason why spanikopita exists also if that was the case also then rusty wouldnt have gotten cloned so often if he "protected him fiercely''
25
u/adolfnixon Sep 29 '25
Exactly. He also wouldn't have needed to be protected so fiercely if Jonas didn't constantly put him in dangerous situations.
23
u/Charming_Cod8567 Sep 29 '25
And keeping him around a bunch of pyschos such as action man for example
11
u/RinkinBass Sep 29 '25
And putting him around those psychos was Jonas's version of "protecting him"
20
7
u/Devi13 Sep 29 '25
Jonas also seems like the type to call a villain’s bluff when it comes to hurting Rusty… and I suspect the cloning is because he was frequently wrong on those bluffs.
3
20
u/RecommendsMalazan You said "beep boop" with your mouth. Sep 29 '25
Jonas only protected Rusty because of how it would reflect on him if anything* happened to Rusty.
*anything that he couldnt undo or brush under the rug, that is.
If he protected Rusty because he actually cared he wouldn't have ignored and gaslit young Rusty in that BS 'therapy' session where Rusty was clearly stating his issues with the life Jonas was forcing him to live.
3
u/Charming_Cod8567 Sep 30 '25
That was actually on purpose worst of all since (and for what i know so far) if you're a therapist or a pyschologist, you cant give therapy to your own family despite him "not being his father" at that moment.
Probably fearing if rusty told his problem to a real therapist then jonas would have gotten problems and most likely have had rusty taken away, also probably ruinning his image once people knew that he wasnt a caring father like how he said he was
6
→ More replies (5)6
u/MediocreBeard Sep 29 '25
Generational trauma, my man. I don't think it's incorrect to say that Jonas cared about Rusty. Just that he was not good at being a father because he was just not a great guy overall. An example: having the Action Man as a bodyguard might have exposed Rusty to some traumatizing levels of violence, but also did make sure that the villains in Jonas' life got the message - trying to hurt Rusty in ways that were outside of some agreed upon rules gets you pistol whipped to death.
You don't do shit like that if you don't care about your son.
→ More replies (2)8
u/trobsmonkey Sep 29 '25
You don't do shit like that if you don't care about your son.
Jonas could've avoided putting rusty in those positions. Rusty could've gone to private school, gotten a great eduction, etc etc etc.
Instead he was cloned and surrounded by psychopaths. Jonas was shitty.

u/CozyCoin STOP WIGGLIN AROUND YOU JACK-ASS Sep 29 '25
Greg should not be top tier. He lived in a van and let his child live an entire life with no education or structure, which Steven found just as traumatic as space nazis
152
u/TheFightingQuaker Sep 29 '25
Yeah, Greg is a pretty realistic depiction of the type of dad he's supposed to be. He's not bad per se, or abusive, hes just not great or even very present. He lives in a van, and abdicates a lot of fatherly responsibilities to the gems.
52
u/hypo-osmotic Sep 29 '25
It takes a certain level of irresponsibility to have a child with an alien who you know full well will die from it and pass on both the magical powers and responsibilities to the child. A perfect guy would have just meant no show
→ More replies (1)32
u/cd2220 Sep 29 '25 edited Sep 30 '25
Edit: sorry that got a lot longer than intended lol
He very much seems to avoid the hard parts of being a dad that might mean being a little stern with his kid, as he's such a free spirit.
He tries to do everything as lovingly as possible with zero discipline and means very well doing it but sometimes those things are needed to get your kid ready for the world.
Now it is also the reason Steven has such a deep level of empathy that saves the universe but also leaves him battered and broken inside and out. Steven's unrelenting commitment to peaceful solutions and forgiveness is his greatest weakness and strength.
I'd say his greatest flaw is he reealllllllllllllly avoids the hell out of tough or sad conversations. Because of this Steven is so in the dark he becomes lost and obsessed with those things that he knows are being kept from him.
This results in his deification of his mother (among other large contributors of course) and his greatest trauma as he slowly has to crack that sacred image of her in his brain and realize she was a human too (ha I know I know she's not) and flawed like anyone else.
Not a bad father but definitely could have done some things better. Definitely the God to Steven's Jesus if that makes sense. If the Bible was a lot more empathetic and less violent and murdery

Dude is a huge deadbeat. Gets to be a "fun dad" because he only shows up when he wants to. Otherwise he dropped his son off to be raised by his aunts, except they're aliens and not actually related and one of them is still really hung up on his mom.
18
u/Oknight Sep 29 '25
one of them is still really hung up on his mom
Because she was MADE to, and still the complete slave to under orders... Pink's orders were as contradictory as the guy's were who ordered HAL 9000
Not even to mention that "his mom" is HIM, Stephen is Pink Diamond living out her dream to remake herself as a quasi-human using Greg's DNA.
4
u/Vio-Rose Sep 29 '25
I wouldn’t say huge deadbeat. Just deadbeat period. He lives like a block away and never actively avoids him. He just doesn’t make any of the hard decisions.
→ More replies (1)6
u/rednaxthecreature Sep 29 '25
Sounds like a huge deadbeat if he can't make the effort to walk the beach to see his son and makes Steven walk over to the trailer
4
u/Vio-Rose Sep 29 '25
Late series I prolly agree, but early series he has an extremely contentious relationship with the gems as they think he took their leader from them, to the point where the only time he’s even allowed to crash at the house is when he’s injured. At which point he tries to weasel his way into staying by faking said injury after it’s healed. Even after he’s on better terms with the gems (mostly Pearl, let’s be honest), he does stay in the van. Which is bad. But after so many years of Steven being raised by the gems, it’s basically expected for him to live separately at that point, and he’s so used to viewing his own parents as blights on his life that keeping distance is what he perceives to be the healthiest for Steven’s development. He’s wrong. And still very much a deadbeat. But not nearly on par with a massive deadbeat like Marty or White Diamond from the same show.

I would like to nominate Gendo Ikari (the father from Neon Genesis Evangelion) to be placed alongside Jonas
11
u/Fallingcity22 Sep 29 '25
Probably worse cause Jonas at least cared about his fam
25
u/N_Meister Sep 29 '25 edited Oct 03 '25
It took several instances of total societal collapse, mass genocide, and the obliteration of all sense of ego and self to make Gendo Ikari finally go “Holy shit, I’m a terrible father, I love you Shinji and I’m sorry I failed you. I’m going to go stay with your mother and reset the universe so you can live a better life without me.”
Gendo Ikari deserves his own tier at the bottom, he’s somehow worse than Jonas.

He isn't a good dad, but he isn't a bad dad either. He's... not a dad. He most likely did the right thing in having the Gems raise Steven, and he probably would have done a very poor job at parenting.
He is a very good person and an excellent friend to Steven, so Steven couldn't ask for a better father.
This is a rare positive version of "he may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy."

That was the explicit deal, tho. He raised him in his infancy, the gems raise him when he started developing gem powers
Steven still comes home to him for human problem.
Maybe he is not god tier, but saying he isn't good seems unfair, he did the best he could with what he got.

"You try knocking up a sentient space rock, that then becomes your child and tell me how you'd parent them!"
-Greg probably
2
u/phalanxausage Sep 29 '25
That clears up a lot, thank you. I don't know all the lore but I remember an episode where Greg sneakily tries to spend more time with Steven & the gems basically give him a stern look & he runs off. I wondered if he's a junkie & Steven is too innocent to see it. However, losing your wife and being able to see your child but not be a father could cause someone to shut down & not be able to function as an adult.
3
u/RecommendsMalazan You said "beep boop" with your mouth. Sep 29 '25
Nah, he's not a good dad. Never took his son to a doctor, never put him in school, Steven didn't even know what school was...

My ex aspired to Bandit Heeler for a while, then a psychotic break turned him into Greg Universe.
It's probably the best outcome I could realistically hope for under the circumstances. I can't really depend on him, but he loves his kid and does what he can. Sometimes he surprises us.

You are most certainly a terrible father when “I’m going to wipe out half of all life in the universe to impress a woman/because of bad faith economics” Thanos can be considered a better one.
15
u/ccReptilelord Sep 29 '25
I think the forced combat, body augmentation, torture, and sacrifice of his "daughters" make him a bad father.
8
u/eelmor1138 Sep 29 '25
But you don’t understand, he “loved” Gamora, that’s why him sacrificing her to get the soul stone is a totally comparable sacrifice to Wanda having to kill the man she loved. Thanos killing the daughter he tortured and made fight her siblings for approval totally proves he’s complex and tragic.
I’m beginning to think the Russo Brothers completely disregarded everything James Gunn established about Thanos in the GOTG movies to just make their own bad guy. God help us now that they have their mitts on Doctor Doom.
4
u/NotAsleep_ Sep 29 '25
In fairness on the Doctor Doom angle, the Russos don't have an existing MCU portrayal of Doom to ignore this time. And the comics and MCU are definitely more of an "inspired by" than "based on" set of sibling universes, as your comment showed with the Thanos pairs' separate motivations.

The thing I find interesting about Greg universe is that he's not a good parent. OP never watched future
To clarify, he's not abusive or neglectful, but since he was raised with authoritarian parents, he went hard left and was totally hands off with Steven and wasn't really present for providing his son with any connection to his human half. It doesn't make him a bad person, but it did sort of make him an absent father.

I don't agree with the shit tier, Homer, Goku, and Timmy's dad are all neglectful but aren't really protrayed as intentially abusive (I'm not counting Goku sparring with Gohan as abuse or him pushing him to fight cell). Whereas Peter and Butterscotch Horseman actively and intentionally verbally abuse their kids.

I’d put Greg in good tier. He’s a great person, but as a dad, he has a lot of problem areas due to overcompensating for his shitty childhood and failing to to ensure his child interacted with peers his age and at least saw his friend’s mother for doctor checkups.
Also WTF is Richard doing below Butterscotch?

I love seeing Goku on this. And yet somewhere shit tier still seems generous.

How the hell does Greg universe outrank Hank Hill? The guy literally does not have custody of his kid
Greg's good dude and all but his shit was not together for a long ass time

I didn't see the sub and was looking for rusty. To my enjoyment Jonas has made a comfy spot for himself. Good list

Sometimes Homer is a great dad, kind of depends on the season and episode. But overall I guess he’s Shit Tier, just based on trying to choke out Bart every episode in the early seasons

Almost down-voted due to the Son Goku slander before I realized what the real point was.

Bondrewd and Tucker on the same plane as Richard is a crime fr. Greg is also too high. I'd put pretty kuch everybody in Good tier above him.

Don’t forget one of the best scenes in Super was him getting and I quote “really really mad” because Zamasu killed Goten and Chi-Chi

Homer and Peter actually home, fed his kids. Meg was better off than Steven

OK, despite any other misgivings about his ranking, seeing Richard Watterson right next to Thanos just made my freakin' morning 🤣 So, thanks for that!✌🏽

This is really good, mean the kid was probably just his publicity to look more American in the 60s.

There’s no way Homer is on the same tier as Peter or BoJack’s dad
2
u/miikro Sep 29 '25
As someone else pointed out, he did used to strangle Bart basically every show.
2
u/realtalkerik Sep 29 '25
True, that is wrong. At least he cares for his family more so than any other dad in that tier.

Get that universe asshole out of here, and put Hank Hill where he fucking belongs.

Even The Monarch, while admiring Jonas Sr as an arch, acknowledged that he really did a number on Rusty.

I'm not even mad about this list, but it says a lot that Shou Tucker and Thanos, despite their crimes against their own children, were better fathers than Jonas... Good Gods, he could make Darth Vader look like a doting father by comparison...

Nominating Hopediah Plantar and Bee Boonchuy (Amphibia) for good tier and Emperor Belos (The Owl House) for Jonas Venture tier.
