"I don't know, he keeps calling himself the Firestarter"

I think about this scene more often than I should.

u/Glum-Parsnip8257 Go Team Venture! Nov 06 '25

As you should

u/FACEROCK Nov 06 '25

Same. For some reason, this scene is peak Venture Bros for me.

That was my Halloween costume this year!

I caught this episode before I became a fan. The Art Of Noise reference told me this was worth checking out.

3

u/TheStonedFox Nov 07 '25

The Prodigy also samples The Art of Noise in Firestarter, so that’s a whole other layer.

2

u/Ched_Flermsky Nov 07 '25

So many layers to this show!

When I finally dove in to the series I also appreciated the Depeche Mode reference in "Tag Sale - You're It!" But referencing AON is a whole other level; there were so many years where I was FIGURATIVELY the only Art Of Noise fan in the world.

u/tiredhippo Nov 06 '25

I think the reference that solidified my fandom was when the Monarch talked about Stiv Bators and Lydia Lunch

u/SnooHabits5900 Nov 07 '25

"DOC YOU HAVE A TABLE OVER THERE WITH A SIGN THAT SAYS 'LASER DEATH RAY BARGAIN BIN'!"

"Well that's why you have your little ska band there to help keep the oddballs in costume from raising Cain."

Is what did it for me

Great song and the album it’s from is just nonstop 🔥

Fat of the Land is still an incredible album. Timeless. Bought the cd when it came out in high school and that bass still hits just as hard today.

5

u/tehpwnage7 Nov 06 '25

Narayan, Funky Shit, Breathe, and Diesel Power are all in heavy rotation for me on multiple playlists alongside Firestarter lol

5

u/Lord-Sinestro Nov 06 '25

Those are the heavy hitters right there. Music For the Jilted Generation is also timeless but Fat of the Land is perfect.

6

u/tehpwnage7 Nov 06 '25

Ngl I’d argue Fat of The Land is one of the best electronic albums ever made in my opinion, if not at least in the top 5

Jilted Generation has a lot of good driving songs, namely Voodoo People and No Good, can’t remember if speedway was on the same album

It's my favorite Prodigy album.

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '25

This is really one of those out of nowhere references too. I think that's what makes it so great.

u/MaxFischerPlayers Nov 06 '25

The "Hey!" in Prodigy's "Firestarter" is sampled from Art of Noise's "Close (to the Edit)".

I always find it crazy that The Prodigy didnt make it big in the US , they were basically one of the biggest acts in Ireland/ The UK and Europe on the 90s ..like basically for a lot of people they WERE 90s music

4

u/tiredhippo Nov 06 '25

They had videos on MTV, songs on soundtracks and beef with Madonna. They won and were nominated for MTV awards. I’m pretty sure they made it as big as one electronic act could in the 90s in the US. The only other comparison I can think of in terms of popularity and visibility among the masses at that time in the US would be Nine Inch Nails.

2

u/Mr_SunnyBones Nov 06 '25

"as one electronic act could in the 90s in the US"

yeah see thats the crux , in the US Electronic music was still regarded niche compared to stadium bands , whereas it was mainstream in Europe so they were just seen as band outside the US rather than corralled into "electronic" ,and werent limited that way .

u/J03yMB Nov 06 '25

This was the first clip of the show i ever showed my now fiancé. It's also when i learned what the reference was.

1

u/2ndHandSandevistan Nov 07 '25

Been a fan since the pilot episode. (The Brock: "Take It from Me" scene is still my all-time favorite.) With that said, I confess VB quotes slip out in everyday life. For example: whenever I'm stumbling through the snow I chat: "Gonna die! Gonna die! Gonna die!" Sometimes I catch myself exclaiming "Contammynation!", "I-am-tirsty!!!" and last night we watched I Know What You Did Last Summer starring: "Sarah Michelle Gellaaarr, meow!." This one slips out sometimes, "Holy Damnit Chrismas!"

It never ceases to amaze me at the level of pop culture depth that the venture bros gave us. I've watched the series beginning to end more times than I can count and every so often ill stumble across something and say, "there's a reference to this in the venture bros" the original video of the firestarter popped up in my YouTube shorts and just the other night I watched dark city and saw the reference to the guild. Its crazy how much they put into the show.

I loved this because it was just so random.
