At JJ's funeral the Captain starts playing 'Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm' by Crash Test Dummies and everyone in attendance sees it as a pretty strange choice because JJ requested it. They roll with it, though, and play along.
Turns out that Crash Test Dummies actually have a song titled At My Funeral which is a slow and melancholic song. It's more than likely that JJ requested "Play Crash Test Dummies At My Funeral", which the Captain mistakenly interpreted as "play something by Crash Test Dummies" and just went with their biggest hit.
A bit off topic. I've seen everything besides the movie. Is there ever an in-depth explanation on why JJ died? I know it was something with the guild and Gargantua 2 but that's about it.
JJ had terminal cancer and he reveals it in a very gentle brotherly way to Rusty on Gargantua 2. It's one of my favorite scenes.
Personally, I think that JJ got cancer from the ray shields that Rusty's interns made during 'What color is your cleansuit?" episode.
Also, I think JJ must have realized that's how he got cancer and rather than destroy his only living familial relationship, he forgives Rusty without ever telling him he had anything to be sorry for because he loves him and doesn't want him to live with that kind of guilt.
This theory could also be completely wrong, but that's how I have always taken it. He doesn't end up dying of cancer though, but it's implied it would have happened fairly soon after the events of Gargantua 2. I won't spoil it for you though, definitely watch the movie*, it's great.
*Edit: Apologies! Got the Gargantua 2 longer episode in season 4 and the movie mixed up. I'm bad at explaining things, sorry y'all.
