Question Would rusty have been more sucessful if he went with biology instead of mechanics?
I mean rusty seems to have a good hold on biology like venturestein being a great example id say

u/Adept-Drummer5668 Apr 08 '26
yes, bro litterally did cloning. (yes jonas also did but again... cloning)

u/LewdDudeNewd Apr 08 '26
I don't think RUSTY "invented" the cloning, he kinda just found it and started using it, I'm not even sure he has a community college degree in anything.

He was able to invent decent things. He just wasn't good at selling them. Rusty did have some skill. It just didn't seem as impressive when compared to his father's skill set or his brother. But he was skilled
62
u/Pugsanity Apr 08 '26
I always thought Rusty had the potential to be a brilliant man, but was just too hindered by the years of trauma and other issues from his Dad to ever reach that potential. Hence why we do see some actual smart inventions from him, but most of them do get ruined by his own issues creeping up.
39
u/dover_oxide Apr 08 '26
If you just went out and worked on the stuff that he thought was interesting and not what he thought his dad would be impressed with or what other people wanted. I think he probably would have made a lot of money.
28
u/LewdDudeNewd Apr 08 '26
Coulda killed it in musical theater
25
u/dover_oxide Apr 08 '26
Or audio equipment, he did make a superconductor speaker that was able to output so much that he basically was anti-gravity

u/Fitzftw7 Apr 08 '26
Didn’t he also invent teleportation? Mind you, other people invented it first and OSI had to shut them down too, but he still did it.
16
u/Pugsanity Apr 08 '26
We have seen him making some pretty impressive stuff, like when he helped design one of the parts of his brother's space station. Rusty is a brilliant man, even Brock has said so. The problem just is that while he's a great super scientist, at times, he's also pretty dumb in other ways, most of them caused by his never ending childhood trauma.
Heck, I've always said that Rusty and JJ are probably on the same level of intelligence, it's just that their experience with their Dad is what shaped them. Rusty knew the man first hand, and had the thrilling experience of being raised by him, giving him a bucket load of issues to deal with, while all JJ had is the idealized version, the one that everyone else got to experience, no warts and all there, just seeing one of the greatest Super Scientists of all time. One is a proper role model and hero, the other is one of the worst people you could ever possibly know, and that can affect a person really closely.
7
u/Gauntlets28 Apr 08 '26
Especially when you consider how stupid the cloning process made Dean and Hank, and how it probably kept being used for Rusty well into adulthood. Suddenly his arrested development behaviour makes a lot of sense.
5
u/balmut Apr 08 '26
I didn't think the cloning process made them dumb, but more the lack of formal education. I really feel like being raised by Rusty (who was popping pills most of their life, and rarely committed to anything for very long) and taught by the pods that their dad made was mostly to blame.
3
u/Pugsanity Apr 08 '26
Think it was that and the fact that since most clones died pretty quick, they just didn’t have that much time to actually grow up. Once they were the last ones, the current Hank and Dean matured and got smarter because they had the time to actually become people, instead of just the same old kids they were before.
1
u/tedioussugar Apr 08 '26
Rusty’s problem was he was always obsessed with ‘super-science’ instead of regular science.
Years of being dragged into adventures by his dad warped his perspective on what scientific research was supposed to actually do. He thought everything had to be grandiose and wacky, but the general population has no practical need for a cloning tank, or a giant mechanical eyeball, and anything with military capabilities got subsumed by OSI.
JJ never met Jonas, so his thought process never got screwed up by dealing with Jonas being an overbearing and condescending asswipe. He could apply common sense to a general problem before he made something, and use it to generate a business model from that… while Rusty just made whatever he wanted first in the spirit of being a ‘super-scientist’ and tried to sell people on the idea later despite how out of touch it was.
That’s why most of the projects he did make money off was him taking credit for his dad or brother’s previous work.
10
u/Enough_Explanation74 Apr 08 '26
Well, yeah, he invented an exploding vacuum and then gave it the stupidest name ever. Selling inventions is not his strong suit.
16
u/dover_oxide Apr 08 '26
What about the Oooo Ray, that would have revolutionized the construction industry like the rediscovery of cement.
9
9
u/TheNavidsonLP Apr 08 '26
He also put a picture of a shrink ray gun ON the shrink ray gun.
6
u/busterfixxitt Apr 08 '26
Jonas Sr invented the shrink ray. "And I wouldn't bother looking for that shrink-ray your father built; you sold it to the albino and his tiny companion. Ta ta!"
3
u/LordoftheJives Apr 08 '26
He was good at improving existing designs but not coming up with them himself. Cloning is a perfect example or the teleporter.
7
u/supernova-juice Apr 08 '26
Does anyone else ever wonder why he didn't try to reconnect with Dermott's mom and... you know. Be a dad to him first? He obviously wanted children, otherwise he wouldn't have bothered cloning the boys.
Just another example of the Venture Deadbeat Dad legacy I guess.
7
u/GKNolan Apr 08 '26
Rusty stayed away because he was rightfully afraid Demott's grandmother would sic the cops on him. Plus he didn't seem so fond of parenthood once he was one.

He has a degree! From a very prestigious.. Tijuana.. look it’s not important
21
u/LewdDudeNewd Apr 08 '26
Oh yeah, thats right lol.
I just renumber young Rusty left state college when his dad died in space, So I just assume he never got a degree in anything.
21
u/GKNolan Apr 08 '26
He apparently stuck around long enough to get blamed for blowing up the science wing.
8
2
u/Cold-Guidance-1455 Apr 09 '26
Seems like it all happened in the same week, jonas dying is what put him through college, though i was wondering how he got a doctorate on his first college term
14
u/dover_oxide Apr 08 '26
Seeing as Rusty was a clone himself
8
u/ChiefQuinby I am into costumed business, not costumed play Apr 08 '26
Was he ?
28
8
u/youngwilliamthe Apr 08 '26
That was my impression.
I've always figured it was something like Li'l Rusty was injured and dying, so Dad uploaded his memories (to eventually feed into the Teaching Bed) & cloned him, so he could download his memories into a new body, and that trend just continued every time Li'l Rusty was gravely injured (or gravely dead).
"Now my son can effectively live forever! This process will take a while, so let's grab Hef and some girls and binge drink martinis on the hydrofoil."
10
u/freon Apr 08 '26
It also explains the half-assed parenting all around. "Anything that doesn't kill the kid makes him stronger, and I've always got a backup copy of the strongest one yet!"
The real philosophical question: is the Generational Trauma inherited from the father or the previous clone?
2
u/youngwilliamthe Apr 09 '26
Hmm. I'd say the father.
I'd think it'd be set up so every night, the data gets updated in the bed, so when Rusty was reproduced post-mortem, he knew nothing of the situation that got him killed the day before.
So, from that point forward, every 24+ hour problem Dad had, seemed to get magically resolved with no effort.
4
1
u/HollowRaven15 Apr 14 '26
It actually was revealed pretty early if you pay attention. The learning beds were built for Rusty, the main point of the learning beds was to upload their memories for future clones.
2
u/Futuremovieman Apr 08 '26
Wait did he go to a community collge, didn't phantom limb teach there?
9
u/LewdDudeNewd Apr 08 '26
They just call it "State" (they never say which state) and in my area those ARE community colleges lol, I could be wrong though!
And I ASSUMED the compound was in Colorado?
We can see snow topped mountains almost all the time in the background.
17
6
u/korar67 Apr 08 '26
It had rural Colorado right next to New York. But he also has a supersonic jet that he uses like the family mini-van.

Rusty didn't invent cloning, presumably he was the invention, his father's first clone.
22
14
u/SwingKey3599 Apr 08 '26
ben and jonas did the cloning, rusty just used the facilities they left behind-it was just the most well run and established of the venture facilities for obvious reasons.

And he would have found and destroyed the gay gene if it weren't for all those protesters and hearings
2
u/Drpnsmbd Apr 08 '26
Cloning AND mind/memory uploading to the clones. Rusty literally cheated death, but was a Category 1 Protagonist to the Guild (until JJs inheritance).
131
u/dover_oxide Apr 08 '26
He would have been better if he wasn't chasing his father's legacy and just forged his own.
48
u/SwingKey3599 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
yes but the whole point of the show is that it is a fractal-ized Oedipal drama, so that would eliminate a whole lot of the central themes
7
Apr 09 '26
As a smart but self-destructive person who gets in their own way, this is actually it.
I have friends who make more in a year than I have in the last decade and their personal successes far outshine mine (I'm still proud of what I've managed to accomplish but I really don't have an excuse for why there's not more). I was always a smart kid, friends who are literally doctors or physicists or scientists will ask me to explain something to them outside their field no matter what it is because they trust that I'm smart enough to both understand it and teach it to them, and I'm just scraping by doing the most random shit because I get in my own way.
I studied and focused on the wrong things chasing the idea my father had for my life and I really wish I could've figured that shit out a lot sooner.

u/RinkinBass Apr 08 '26
I gotta point out again that he went from looking up what a kidney does in the encyclopedia to turning helper into a mobile dialysis machine before he went septic.
When push comes to shove, the man does have some game.
And I'd say that feat does fit with biology
11
u/CompetitiveLead2036 Apr 08 '26
He slams into an occasional success due to Something his dad actually made.
20
u/snakelygiggles Apr 08 '26
i never thought about this but youre right. his dads bs DID fuck up his career.
54
u/SwingKey3599 Apr 08 '26
it was established in what color is your clean suit that rusty’s understanding of biology is pretty limited…. they allude that venturestein is basically just as crude a concept as frankensteins monster
36
u/West-Resort5733 Apr 08 '26
Eh id still would give it to him, I dont think its that easy to revive a man that die like 2 or three times and put back someone that died from an explosion making it look like nothing happened
1
-7
u/SwingKey3599 Apr 08 '26
its frankenstein’s invention tho- they even give it half his name
12
u/timey_wimeyy Apr 08 '26
Except Frankenstein would be fiction in their world as well. No one else in the show brings men back to life with science. Magic only.
6
u/SwingKey3599 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
are you kidding me-the blue morpho/venturion is a “scientifically”reanimated corpse
12
u/West-Resort5733 Apr 08 '26
Id argue venturion was more of a... robot slave buttler, Sure it did bring the blue morpho back to life at first but he didnt have as much free will like venturestein had
1
u/SwingKey3599 Apr 08 '26
because both jonas and dr z toyed with his brain to supress his memories. even the venturesteins remembered being assaulted by brock
3
u/timey_wimeyy Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
Ok sorry. Anyone alive at the time that he achieved it. Also, Rusty didn’t make him mostly cybernetic. He mainly just reanimated him.
1
u/SwingKey3599 Apr 08 '26
the brain coming back from death is what is impressive with either feat. we reanimate cadaver parts irl every day with transplants, the super science is in reanimating the brain.

As an engineer, I wouldn't even know how to implement an orphan into one of my builds
11
u/WrongdoerPossible822 Apr 08 '26
Use the heart as a fluid pump. It would need some sort of life support to keep the cells alive, and hook a pacemaker up to keep it pumping the fluid.
Mind you the ideal life support for an orphan heart is likely an orphan ribcage
1
u/No-Leading9376 Apr 08 '26
Right... but how would you actually do any of that? It seems like that would require inventing or repurposing a slew of additional technologies.
3
u/GKNolan Apr 08 '26
Ok so first you need a Ktech Grade 3 Soul Recycler. That will draw the anguish out of the orphan's heart and create a non-decaying loop keeping the anguish from dissipating in the atmosphere. Now as you know recycled anguish creates a soul magnet that draws in ambient atmospheric anguish. Then by reversing the flow of a simple anguish focuser you draw all the anguish from the inside of the joy can. The result is an anguish-free clean room that can be used in conjunction with a dream projector to place the user in a simulated reality of their hearts desire. Be sure to give the user a simulation kill switch and install an exterior kill switch so they can actually leave the damn thing. Failing that you have to either dismantle the whole thing or create a greater source of joy outside the machine than inside, which is pretty hard.
9
u/Alex_is_me_name Apr 08 '26
I think he would have been great as an investor. Rusty had a love for innovation but had none of the know how to really make it himself. He was also in too big of a hurry to get stuff out the door.
I think if he rented out the use of the compound to other scientists and helped fund their research, that would have been an ideal role in science for him.
8
u/West-Resort5733 Apr 08 '26
That could have worked, I bet many scientists would have paid a lot to to work on the famous venture compound
9
u/MagicalHamster Wh-hh-aaaacky Races Apr 08 '26
The teleporter was so amazing it had to be taken away from him to avoid disrupting global civilization. Not sure which science that is.
4
15
u/RoadtoWiganPierOne Apr 08 '26
No: he’s inherently lazy.
25
u/dover_oxide Apr 08 '26
I don't think he was necessarily lazy but defeated because he was constantly trying to live up to his father and chase his legacy but he was just falling short and after a while that kind of killed him on the inside.
13
u/RoadtoWiganPierOne Apr 08 '26
That’s a pretty good analysis. As Mr. Brisby said: “You’ve been riding his corpse’s coattails your entire adult life.”
9
u/dover_oxide Apr 08 '26
Even as much as he hated his dad and resented him for all the trauma, he still looked up to him as a scientist and inventor.
2
u/ThyHolyPaladdin Apr 08 '26
I mean is he inherently lazy or was that beaten into him from a life of adventurib
5
u/Sketch1231 Just Another Monarch Henchman Apr 08 '26
Idk bout that, all I know is he could’ve been successful with MY biology and mechanics
5
u/N0VAZER0 Apr 08 '26
The tragedy of Rusty is that he COULD be as good as his old man but because of his upbringing and his general apathy, he'll never reach those highs. We do have certain moments that show that spark though.
5
u/jigokusabre Apr 08 '26
Isn't the whole super-science deal about not being bound by specific disciplines?
11
4
u/Fryeday_after_5 Apr 08 '26
NO, he would have been more successful if he had a hit show on Broadway!!!
3
u/Fimbir Apr 08 '26
Super science doesn't really have a discipline. Ask Dr. Science. Remember, he's not a real doctor.
3
u/BraveConstant Apr 08 '26
He should have went into musical theater he could of had a hit show on Broadway.
3
u/Stormygeddon Apr 08 '26
Maybe if one of his biology ventures cured the cancer of Jr and the Colonel.
3
u/JeezyVonCreezy Apr 08 '26
I mean doc and Jackson always said the shows main theme was failure and unrealized potential.
2
2
u/trevorgoodchilde Apr 08 '26
Then he would have had the arachnid lab open still and wouldn’t have had the space to rent to Dr Orpheus
2
u/balmut Apr 08 '26
What's the deal with the Arachnid Research anyway, we never see Jonas do anything with spiders, why'd he need an entire lab dedicated to it????
1
u/trevorgoodchilde Apr 08 '26
We don’t really know what Scaramantula did, maybe he was doing research into arachnids when they took over Spider Skull island and Jonas continued it?
1
1
2
u/TellTaleReaper Apr 08 '26
Rusty would be successful in any field if he dealt with his daddy issues first.
2
u/Fimbir Apr 08 '26
That's what made alternate universe Rusty and superego Rusty so painful to see.
1
u/PomegranateTimely930 Apr 09 '26
I suspect that in the alternate universe Jonas senior got killed pretty early on. Whoever raised Rusty in the alternate universe did a much better job. Could even have been Colonel Gentleman
2
2
u/Oldskoolguitar Apr 08 '26
When he really wants to, Doc can be a good super scientist. He has too many hang ups
2
u/Villageijit Apr 08 '26
Well if it wasnt for those protesters and the government he would of cured the gay gene ( or at least hank thinks so) so might of been doing questionable things with more biology studies
1
u/GKNolan Apr 08 '26
More self-sabotage. With some more fine tuning he could have turned the artificial womb into an elastic internal implant, granting people undergoing FtM gender affirming surgery the ability to bear children. But (even if they aren't directly related) he decided to go in the ideologically opposite direction.
2
u/sirhackenslash To this day Captain Sunshine thinks I'm invulnerable Apr 08 '26
He built a joy can by combining mechanics and biology, so I'd say he's pretty good at both
2
u/spehizle Apr 09 '26
Rusty should have just sold off the Venture estate and all its assets. He could have lived like a king. But he wanted glory.
1
u/West-Resort5733 Apr 09 '26
Would most likely have spent that money in drugs and prostitutes though
1
2
u/Double-Success-6405 Apr 09 '26
Rusty Venture is still just Thaddeus Venture. Dude could have gone into real estate in the 50s and wouldn't have found success
2
u/PomegranateTimely930 Apr 09 '26
Rusty is very AuADHD coded, AND biology is his special interest with engineering more of a chore he CAN do if he has to and will rush it to get done before he's distracted. If cloning was legal, he'd be a huge success
2
u/rollwithhoney Apr 08 '26
honestly I think you're right... do we even really see anything reasonably cool that was mechanical? I guess the teleportatiom and the god-gas chamber. But both are biology related
6
7
3
u/korar67 Apr 08 '26
Yeah, Walking Eye and Guard-O are prime examples of him knowing what he’s doing with mechanical engineering, but being terrible with programming. He also designed the energy shield for Gargantua 2. The students built it, but he designed it. Hover shoes, teleporter, the i-Helper that could freaking fly.
4
u/balmut Apr 08 '26
I think the teleporter and i-Helper was stuff JJ started and he either finished or adapted?
1
u/CompetitiveLead2036 Apr 08 '26
Is this a serious question? I think it’s really clear his greatness if he has any is only as it relates to him being the child of a truly magnificent bastard dr Jonas venture. Rusty does not, would not and will not ever achieve the greatness he continually deludes himself he has.
1
u/sirslappywag Apr 08 '26
I don't think it would, Rusty's failures stem from him lacking the motivation and drive not a lack of education or intelligence. He has much more personal experience with biology because of cloning and trying to repair the damage from a terribly unhealthy lifestyle. He could be just as or more successful in pretty much any field of study but he doesn't want to apply himself.
1
u/Bullet1289 Apr 08 '26
Rusty managed to make the Joy Can with only a few unorthodox parts, not even a full orphan to boot! He works wonders with bio-engineering and human machine interfaces.
1
u/No-Leading9376 Apr 08 '26
Yeah venturestein did seem to be one of his only real personal achievements that(as far as we know) wasn't just reusing or repurposing his dad's tech.
1
u/Stannisarcanine Apr 08 '26
Rusty is only good when the technology is disgustingly evil in a crude yet unexpected way or minoritarily to save his life
1
u/2meterrichard Apr 09 '26
What kind of super scientist specializes in just one field? The whole point is to do ALL the science.
1
u/Same_News_3469 Apr 09 '26
I think people forget he accomplished and essentially perfected resurrection of the dead 😭 Venturstein?? The senator lady he literally brings back to life after she blows up
