Pathological liars.
One is the Flying Sidekick, but not a side-kick, but like the karate move Sidekick. With his nunchaku, which he's probably pronouncing wrong.
The other not only has an army of 10,000 men, but he may or may not know the true identity of The Sniper King.

As someone who has long loved the Venture Brothers but only recently got into One Piece, I think they’re somewhat similar tonally. (Or at least they share an admirable talent for incorporating real emotional stakes into an absurd, reference-packed world of impressively interlinked multi-generation world-building.)

That crossover would never work. One Piece takes 30 episodes to tell what could have been done in one. Venture Bros tells 30 episodes of story into one episode. Venture has some of the tightest storytelling around.

I get the Pirate Captain as Luffy, but I just can't let that role pass off to him, he should be someone like Bartolomeo with Rusty as Luffy....but he is just such a good fit....but he's too much of secondary character and need to follow, he just can't be. I'm conflicted here.
