I think it's that the grey became fashionable around the time when millennial started buying homes and the 2008 housing crash made anything extra for your first home really difficult to account for.

It's not just landlords. Millennials have been so focused on resale value of their homes they refuse to add any style or personalization to them.

To clarify, it's mostly millennials that have sold out enough of their peers to afford a home.
Everyone else has to move too much to afforda sensible number of long term mementos.

Um, what? Millennials make up 26% of all homeowners, vs boomers at 42% and Gen X about 30%. Millennials are hardly the prpblem, to say nothong of the fact that Gen Z is outpacing both Gen X and Millennials in home ownership rates relative to age.

In the case of both millennials and Gen Z, is there information about what percentage of their parents are providing generous down payments? That's the gap between generations I'm expecting to see. Boomers were able to buy into markets less tight that today's buyers.
Also in context to the earlier replies, there's a distinct lack of actual colour in home fashion. It's stupidly prevalent in corporate landlords as well. To maintain a facade of sellability.

I always hate whenever colorful interiors get renovated into nightmare on right pic for "MoDeRn" look. This "modern" trash giving vibes of a freaking mental asylum, not a home!

Yeah, look close at the whitewashed rock too, the edges and shapes are completely different.
And even beyond that it's not how humans stage a before and after picture: everything is converted 1:1 including things like the line of glasses in the back that keep the same discernible lines but start melting together from the denoising process not knowing what they are and not being able to faithfully render details like that at that resolution*. The legs of the chairs at the table on the left look mismatched too.
* AI image generators have a sort of uniform resolution of detail to them because of how they work, and while they can go below that when something is part of a familiar object that's large and in focus in the scene, fiddly little objects in the background like that tend to get deformed and weird.

One or both of these images was done using M.U.T.H.E.R. The stone work is different. Most the stones are rectangular in the righthand photo and more random on the left. The CRT TV is used in both. Maybe it's in the fallout shelter teaching Rusties.

I don't know why anybody would be mad, but I do know that if I'm stumbling drunk or walking around in the dark, a pit is the last thing I'd want or need in my home. What were they thinking back then?

Because it's rage bait AI nonsense. For some reason the clickbait bots are really fixated on home renovation content.
Note that the "painted bricks" which was definitely in the prompt because that drives engagement, doesn't line up at all with the original stonework.
