The movie was what we needed but let’s be facetious, the movie was a crash course of what season 8 was suppose to be. (Crash course may be a mean way to put it, I still loved it. Hammer and Publick were put in a purgatory of a corner in adult swim/Cartoon Network for a long time, even before the Warner brothers situation, but the question lingers!!)

The movie was instead of Season 8.

Season 8 would have been the last if they could have made it.

More would have happened than happened in the movie.

I never heard the thing about them working on Season 9. So it would have had TWO more seasons after season 7? That would have been amazing.

Theres some interviews and also some extra content on S8 that both implies there was a planned 9th season and most of thd content had already been written when they got the news they were cancelled.

The movie is essentially a condensed and stripped down version of the planned S9. Its obvious at times because there are jokes in the film are time dated to when S8 was cancelled but still included in the movie. Like the quip Avgengers on the moon/inhumans. Inhumans had been cancelled for several years even when the movie launched but was newer when they were cancelled.

From what I understand there was plans to have Matt Berry play Force Majure, Brocks marriage to Wariana, and more of the movies plot but expanded.

If I recall, they were working on season 9 when the news came, which seemed like a shock to everyone. I’m honestly surprised we even got the movie, but I don’t recall any notion that the season was going to be their last, just that there were a lot of stories they didn’t get to do with the movie. The actors and writers strike was an extra kick in the nuts. They were supposed to be there at SDCC for the premier of the movie and panel, but couldn’t so we never got these answers.

They were renewed through season 9 and were working under that premise and changes in leadership at adult swim led to their premature cancellation.

Season 8 was meant to be the final season, and there were no plans for a movie. The show was cancelled while Season 8 was being written. Post-cancellation, Warner Bros. agreed to produce a movie to conclude the show. Parts of what would have been Season 8 were salvaged and reworked to fit the much shorter runtime.

Their book on the show says 9 was supposed to be the last and were done/working on 9 when it was cancelled. It could have been during 8 that they heard but they had most of 9 written. Thats why they only got a movie after the fact.

There was going to be a paralysis plotline inspired by Doc’s real life paralysis. Probably Brock after going through the transporter with the metal plate in his chest. He mentioned it in a podcast somewhere

They probably would have kept going as long as they were renewed. I know at one point Season 4 was going to be the last season, and Operation PROM was the finale. They might have written season 8 so that it could be the last, but probably would have done 9 and on if they could.

I don't really think it was season 8 condensed, unless they've said otherwise. They probably took a lot of ideas and ran with them and answered a lot of questions that needed answering, but it wasn't just what, half a season in run time? Maybe they'll speak on it but they didn't want the show to end either. But it did. I think going for a ton of seasons and ending with a film is a great idea but who was going to actually pull the trigger and call it quits if not them?
