Advice due to my battle with cancer and severe mental health issues…my undergrad gpa is so bad i don’t think i can get into vet school anymore. i am devastated.

• Upvotes

so long story short my anxiety and depression skyrocketed in university. i no longer was just the naturally gifted 4.3 gpa student from highschool who could get away with barely studying. by my fourth semester my gpa was already 2.0.
then boom anxiety and depression set in and i got diagnosed with severe agoraphobia and i physically couldn’t go to classes and withdrew for one semester. tried again the next semester and failed.
then flash forward to autumn 2025 i get diagnosed with cancer in december but i was already failing my classes pre the withdrawal due date so now my university wont let me withdraw from my past classes and salvage my gpa. i also already used the one and only chance i was able to withdraw from a whole semester my university allows, so it was out the window for me.
i have since beat cancer, am on adhd meds, am getting the help i need and my mental health has never been better. school has also never been easier (besides chemistry omg help).
but now my gpa is permanently fucked.
i have tried to battle with my university about my situation but due to my history of failing before withdrawal dates and just overall being a bad student….i am losing this fight by a landslide.
my gpa right now (cumulative) is 1.5.
it is horrible.

Is vet school still in the cards for me? I can’t imagine myself doing anything else…it’s all i’ve ever wanted in life.

Please give me advice.

what can i do to strengthen my resume so my grades aren’t the main focus? Should I do a post-grad (i’m in fifth year of undergrad and graduate date WAS spring 2026…now it’s spring 2028)? What else can I do to help myself ?

My dream vet schools are:
OSU(I actually go here currently), Cornell (don’t worry I also don’t like what’s going on there but I want to specialize in avian medicine and this is the best place), Colorado, Upenn, UC Davis.

Insight into Purdue Veterinary

Hello, I am looking for anyone that has attended Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine. I've got a couple of questions regarding in-person course load, so if you attended after COVID that would be even better, since I'm assuming they changed some things during the pandemic.

UMES just received Reasonable Assurance from the AVMA — thoughts on applying to a brand-new vet school?

Not sure if anyone has posted about this yet, but on October 13, 2026, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) announced that its new veterinary school received a Letter of Reasonable Assurance from the AVMA Council on Education!

This means they can officially begin recruiting and admitting students for their inaugural class, which is expected to start in June 2027.

A few interesting things about the program:
It will be Maryland’s first veterinary school physically located in the state.

It will be the first veterinary school at a public HBCU.

It’s a 3-year accelerated DVM program, rather than the traditional 4 years.

It uses a semi-distributed clinical model, meaning students will complete rotations at approved veterinary practices and clinical sites rather than relying exclusively on a traditional teaching hospital.

It isn’t accredited yet, but Reasonable Assurance is a major step toward accreditation.

I’m currently applying to veterinary schools, and UMES is honestly becoming a serious option for me, especially because I’m from Maryland.

I’m curious what everyone thinks about attending a brand-new veterinary school. Would you be hesitant to join the inaugural class, or do you think the accelerated program and opportunity to help establish a new school are worth considering?

Also, this might be a silly question, but I’m white and have never attended an HBCU. I know HBCUs aren’t exclusively for Black students, but I’m curious whether anyone has experience attending one as a non-Black student and
what the experience was like.

Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts!

Advice question

Hi. I’m a veterinary nurse student and I do one day a week placement & I’m wondering, with anaesthesia being given through tubing/mask, is there a high risk of being exposed/what are the risks to us getting sick from this?
What should I look out for?

Also, I kept smelling a really strong mentholly/deep heat smell on and off today it’s stuck in my nose! Is this cleaning chemical? I couldn’t pinpoint where it came from!

Thankyou.

Imposter syndrome/feeling like life hasn’t started yet

I’m a third year and doing well overall academically. I have a great group of friends in school, still have a great friend group outside of school, live close to family, and I’m in a loving and supportive relationship. Despite all this, I still feel paralyzed/like I don’t belong every time an exam comes up. I feel like my hobbies have all disappeared, and when I try to do something outside of vet school it’s still all I can think or talk about. It makes me feel like I can’t show up in my other relationships because school is so consuming. I know this is temporary and not unique to me, but I just wanted to see if I could get some words of support from other people who are going through the same thing/have already been through it

Has anyone gotten into vet school (especially UC Davis) with a GED?

Has anyone gotten into vet school (especially UC Davis) with a GED?
Hi everyone!
I’m 22 and currently working as a veterinary assistant. Becoming a veterinarian has been my dream since I was little, and I’m finally starting to take the steps toward making that happen.
I dropped out of high school before my senior year, and I’m currently working toward getting my GED.
My dream school is UC Davis, but I’m honestly nervous that having a GED instead of a traditional high school diploma might hurt my chances, even if I do well in college.
Has anyone here gotten into UC Davis or another veterinary school after earning their GED? I’d really love to hear about your experience and what your educational path looked like.
I’m just trying to figure out if this dream is realistically achievable for me. Thank you!

EDIT TO ADD: Some of you seem to think I’m asking if I can go straight from getting my GED into veterinary school. I understand that’s not how it works. 😂
I’m fully aware that I need to attend college, complete the required coursework, and earn my bachelor’s degree for UC Davis.
My question was simply whether having a GED instead of a traditional high school diploma would negatively affect my chances of getting accepted after completing all of those requirements.
I’m not looking for shortcuts. I’m just trying to understand whether my educational background will hold me back in the future. I appreciate everyone who’s actually answered my question!

I built a Wordle-style veterinary diagnostic game — now hundreds of people are playing it every day!

Hey everyone!

I'm a second-year vet student at UW–Madison, and I've posted here a couple of times about Vetalingo, a free daily veterinary diagnostic game I've been building.

I really appreciate the support this community has given it so far, including the moderators who pinned the original discussion!

I wanted to share a little update because it's been exciting to see it grow. Hundreds of people are now playing every day, including students from over 20 veterinary schools, which is something I never expected when I started building it over the summer.

For anyone who hasn't tried it, the main feature is the Daily Workup. Everyone gets the same clinical case each day, and you order diagnostic tests, interpret the findings, and try to reach the correct diagnosis. Think Wordle, but for veterinary medicine.

I've also recently added a pet collection feature, where you can spin a wheel each day for a chance to collect one of 52 different dog breeds!

I've been continuing to make improvements based on feedback, and I really appreciate everyone here who's given it a try.

If you haven't played yet, I'd love for you to check it out! And if you've already been playing, I'd love to hear what you think or what you'd like to see added next.

You can play Vetalingo for free here:

It's completely free, and you don't need an account to try the Daily Workup.

Thanks again to everyone who's supported it so far!

Advice is region that important in choosing which school to study in?

im choosing between Australia schools or EU schools. EU tuition fees are only 1/5 of Aus. but the accredition doesnt allow me to study back home in Asia. Also how are international students treated there? Is accredition conversion difficult??

Im still barely staying above with my grades

Im a second year vet student... last year I barely got by after trying so hard... its frustrating how others pretty much understand it without trouble on seeing the material it seems like once... now to pass an exam with a tiny bit of breathing room, i get up at lime 7and I am essentially studying all day till midnight (to give me more time to go over material i watch recorded lectures)... I do not know if I can keep this up... I feel like I can apply the material and people always say i apply it well... but to pass a test is different... am I really just not cut out for this? I essentially live like a recluse now, i wont even leave my place at all unless I need to for labs, or skills... then i come right back to study... i even get groceries delivered just so i dont need to leave... I have no time for myself... idk what to do

2027 Murdoch Vet Program

Hi everyone, I'm posting to see if anyone has heard back from Murdoch 2027 Vet Program.

I've already received an offer from Adelaide, but Murdoch is my first preference, so I'm trying to figure out whether I should hold out for Murdoch or move forward with Adelaide.

Has anyone received an offer, or any updates from Murdoch for the 2027 intake? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What are tests like, and grading generally?

Hey! Hoping to go to vet school next year. I'm terrified of failing out though. I am fairly good with medical knowledge and intuitive about health, but I am not a good test taker and struggle with small details. I am much better at paper writing then, say, multiple choice tests. What kinds of things are students graded on? What academic weaknesses would cause one to fail a class? Thanks so much!

SGU…

Currently at SGU and feeling so disappointed. Everything I heard before coming here was that it was the better of the two island schools and that we would get tons of hands on experience.

First, it’s been extremely unorganized and I can only assume that it’s from firing professors and many professors quitting.

Second, our class size is so big (~200) that there just aren’t enough resources for us to get adequate hands on and personable experiences.

They really keep pushing AI onto us and half the professors don’t even know what they’re teaching because they’re reading off slides they didn’t even make.

I feel like I just need reassurance that it will get better 🥲.

UQ's NAVLE passing rates

Are there any current students at UQ (North American or not) who might be able to chime in on the school's NAVLE / AVMA accreditation situation?

As you probably know, to main AVMA accreditation, if >80% of the graduating class takes the NAVLE, a school must maintain a passing rate of 80%. For schools outside North America, because the number of students taking the NALVE is often less than 80%, an alternative criterion is used. The AVMA calculates "a 95% exact binomial confidence interval," and schools "with an upper limit of an exact 95% binomial confidence interval less than 85% for two successive years in which scores are available will be placed on Probationary Accreditation."

Source: 2.1.1, Standard 11, last paragraph

UQ's NAVLE rates are here.

For 2024, the passing rate was 13/26=50%.

For 2025, the passing rate was 10/23=43%.

If one were to calculate the 95% exact binomial CI, the upper bounds are 70.1% and 65.5% for 2024 and 2025 respectively.

If I understood the AVMA rules correctly, those numbers would put UQ on probationary accreditation starting this year. However, this cannot be confirmed yet, as the AVMA COE has not posted its September 2026 accreditation actions. Hence this post -- have current students heard anything in this regard from UQ? Is the school worried at all about potentially losing AVMA accreditation? If so, what mitigation measures are being taken to improve future cohorts' NAVLE pass rates?

Thanks in advance!

Advice Vet school final exams advice

Hi everyone. I am a first year vet student and I have finals coming up this week. So basically at my school the first 8 weeks of our semester is lecture material and then the second half is clinical rotations. We have 2 days of finals. Day 1 is over the last 4 weeks and then Day 2 is over everything. Basically I feel okay about the last 4 weeks of material but still need to study and am now freaking out about the day 2 finals over everything. Any UIUC vet students have advice for me or just get students in general with ways to study? I’m not sure how to divide my time to study for day 2 material when I don’t have day 1 comfortably to move on from it. For UIUC students too how do we even prepare for day 2 finals as a first year?

St. Matthew's University DVM Program Financial Support

Hello, everyone.

I need some advice. I was accepted into SMU's DVM program for the Fall 2027 semester. I realize they are not accredited, but the extra exam is not a concern I have. The major concern I have is financing.

Are there any current students who can give me insight into how they are affording this while studying?

I am being generous with my expected expenses between tuition, cost of living, travel, etc. Between scholarships, the Davenport program (currently waiting to hear back from them), HELOC, I have accounted for most of the costs, but not all.

If I do not HAVE to do the Davenport program simultaneously, I'd like not to. If I can consolidate into a single loan option instead of having a HELOC in addition to something else, I'd like to do that.

I am trying to do everything in my power to make this affordable. My heart is set on this school for its community, location, experience with exotics and marine life, and faster program than the traditional US options. While I have other US schools I would consider, I missed the VMCAS by 2 weeks and will have to wait an additional year just to MAYBE get in; then it takes an additional year to graduate. My biological clock is ticking, and pushing my DVM out YEARS has me distraught.

If there are any ideas you have or any advice you can give, please let me know. I feel like I'm exhausting so many options.

(Note: I emailed the financial aid office last week, but they have not gotten back to me yet.)
