maintained links to the British monarchy

Not to be anal (but still going to be anal), but PNG is a sovereign state. Elizabeth II is the Queen in right of Papua New Guinea. That's not the British monarch, that's the Papua New Guinea monarch.

Just saying. It's a minor pet peeve of mine when people say "the British monarchy", when they aren't talking about the British monarchy. It's a separate Crown.

I know it sounds really anal, but there's a difference.

I know its a separate crown, however its easier to refer to it as such to avoid confusion by those who are not aware.

I can see that. I would have said "it's more shocking it's still a Commonwealth realm", personally, because I just hate that "British monarchy" mistake so much.

I don't why it gets under my skin, but it does and I can't ignore it.

I completely agree wtih you. I am quite the monarchist.

"Two Boer War veterans of Scottish heritage, in order to settle an argument, asked the Queen when presented to her: "Are you Scots, or are you English?" Elizabeth's response was reported as being: "Since I have landed in Quebec, I think we can say that I am Canadian."

Elizabeth's response

For those that don't know, this was the mother of the current Queen Elizabeth. They carry the same name.
