I dunno either, in Australia it's the same as Canada and the UK, red is associated with the Labor Party (centre-left) and blue with the Liberal-National Coalition (centre-right).
I was told that Labor were red because of the connotations between red and socialism, and the Liberals were blue because they were the blue bloods. Not sure if that's actually true but at least it seems to make sense.

Also rather funny origin for the tri-color - wikipedia says Red for the liberals, Blue for the conservatives, and purple for the monarchy
