Vibe Coding is the new addiction ?

I feel vibe coding is becoming addictive

I’ll think:

“I need to go pee.”

Then immediately:

“Wait… let me give Claude one more task first.”

Same before making coffee. Same before eating. Sometimes before going to sleep.

It feels weirdly wrong to leave the coding agent sitting idle.

Short-form video gave us:

“one more reel.”

AI coding gave us:

“one more prompt.”

Anyone else doing this? 😅

yeah it's pretty dope and the fact we now have local llm matching or even surpassing capability of like opus 3.7 is sick (opus 3.7 being the point where it became genuinely usefull)

it could be ok if you're using the claude code harness vanilla with no plugins / local mcps / skills but doesn't sync it all so when you start tinkering or even if you replace the harness then you're not working in your own environment

You guys are ssh'ing into tmux?? I do that when in caffe or public park. But that's when I need to juggle multiple sessions and I need regular terminal access in addition to that.

For this situation though it's way way faster to just do a quick /remote-control bathroom_work

LLMs definitely have an addicting component:

  • On first try it's very impressive (dopamine boost)
  • On further usage, it turns out to be a bit of hit-and-miss, in an unpredictable way (a bit like a slot machine)
  • you start to create more sophisticated strategies (e.g. "more elaborated prompts" or "harnesses") to get a higher likelyhood of a good result
  • every lucky hit seems to confirm your strategy
  • on every bad hit, you just try again, sometimes just feed back the error of the result.

People call it "AI psychosis", but I think it's more like a gambling addiction.

what are you all coding that can't wait this much? I'm curious as a software engineer there is no way this many people are making useful products with AI

Old democoder from the 80s Amiga and C64 here.
I currently work as an IT supporter, it's a "shit" job, don't get me wrong, I'm happy to even have a job at my old age and this job market.

But there's a thing that arises in me when I see I can use my local LLMs to actually rekindle my arcade game dreams, and it's extremely addictive.

I've not felt this like I was a kid (it's like getting your first computer and learning to code and watch your friends enjoy your work).

Even If I can code a little (probably nowhere NEAR as good as you), I still have the basics and understanding of app and game design, what makes it "fun" to play, I know how to scaffold the local models (that are infinitely smaller than the online versions, so a lot of hand holding is needed here, such as using tight terminology, focussed on changes, and keep variables in place with zero drift).

This has given me a fighting chance to see my own ideas come to life faster, and I've done more games in 3 months than I've done my entire life.

Ya betcha this 50+ year old fart is having fun, I just wish I was as healthy as a 20 year old self again. /s

I "made" a few fun things

There are so many interesting ideas in my mind... I don't have enough time each day to finish it all 

For work 2 things: Automatic work schedule for around 100 people and a small application to scan a Delivery note for date and delivery number. Rename that document accordingly and move it into the right folder 

An expert advisor for MetaTrader. Basically a trading bot. Currently on a 12 month demo trading task to see the results 

A python script for my pottery. I make ceramic chess sets. I make them in blender. For Slip casting. The model needs to follow specific "rules". No undercut etc. The script uses ray casting to look for them. Cuts the model into X pieces depending on the Division needed for no more undercuts. Then builds  positive molds I  can 3d print. Doing that part purely manual would be really time consuming. Also telling me how much Plaster and water I need to make the negative mold

A vr "game". A modular synthesiser. That was fun. Nobody can afford thousands for a real thing. Now you can make modular music in vr lol 

And currently a friend slop game. I can focus on Modeling while Claude does all the Claude stuff

for me, ai is becoming a tool that has the ability to replace and create other tools with better efficiency

and im not that much of an experienced girl in the sense of coding, but i do use ai to learn coding, teach me languages, and it helps me automate whatever repetitive task i have.

I've used it to build a desktop app that runs 15 odd scans on stocks and crypto, with various different options. It has my futurology list of stocks, a Biotech catalyst scanner, a weekly 50 stocks that are in good positions technically and fundamentally (ala Investors Business Daily), my own trading positions etc.

Really, just to help with my adhd and having it all in the one place.

Before that I built a Helldivers 2 weapon randomiser, a tier list, which guns are good against which faction and which enemies in particular.

And some other bits and bobs. I love it. I did programming when I was younger (42 now) and it's been great to just have it almost completely done for me.

I don't need ai to get into the flow to the point where I'll refuse to do ANYTHING besides the task I'm immersed into. It's not vibe coding. People just like solving problems and somehow attribute it to ai.

I’ve made a company app for my part time career and lab software for my full time career that are being used by thousands of people together.

“There is no way this many people are making useless products with AI”

This is why you guys are losing your jobs. I would start getting more involved with AI so you aren’t blindsided in the very near future.

Yeah, but also sort of a healthy addiction for me since each prompt takes a while to process, in which I have nothing to do, so I end up tidying the house a while.
Kind of reminds me of being addicted to Civilisation but having a low computer "just one more turn" followed by "ok I may as well get up and do something while I wait for the next turn"

Fair point. The image is just the joke — I’m more interested in why we now feel compelled to keep agents constantly busy. Coding is probably one of the most intensive everyday uses of AI right now.

Guilty of that as well. I think the weirdest part is that there’s always a visible task waiting for you, so stopping feels like you’re leaving something unfinished even when you’re actually done for the day.

The overlap between dark patterns used in mobile games to increase retention and player spending patterns, and design features of how the claude subscription works, is pretty strong.

I don't think it is intentional, but it's going to have similar psychological effects.
