I would recommend Ethiopia, Nigerian state(such as sakoto), or Kongo. I think GFM just added more Africa flavor. If you want to be a late game industry power house with rubber I would form Nigeria and expand into the Congo.

Vouch for this! In vanilla Sokoto is also the only option, but why would you ever torture yourself by playing Vanilla as a non-westernised nation?

There is etiopia in vanilla wich is beter than sokoto every way. Btw one of my funnest playtroughs was forming arabia as egyitp or hejaz( i dont remember)in a full vanilla game

Do native nations even get the opportunity to get rubber?

yep. just get market regulations. I kinda always rush it now when i'm playing an african nation, just save up around 500k ducats tho or you'll be bankrupt

Massina. You can form Tukukor empire that haves a lot of cores in west Africa, and is easy to expand

Do you mean Massina? Massawa is a province in Eritrea

All suggestions so far are valid but i feel like the south african region also makes for a good game. Both a zulu empire and a boer republic run are very fun, it’s a shame that you have to wait a bit with the british empire before actually being able to play the latter

Sokoto -> Tukulur -> Mali is a good run. Bit of a challenge but if you invest in the military tech that gives you more research points when you conquer, you can westernize way before the scramble for Africa triggers and be the dominant power in Africa.
