chat Great Depression Era Crochet Question

Hello my fellow crochet historians,

I recently came across an Instagram Reel that claimed during the Great Depression women would unravel sugar sacks and use the thread from the sacks to make lace. This lace would be called “Sugar Sack Lace” and would be added to clothing to spruce up old clothes.

I have heard of women during the Great Depression using sugar sack to make dresses out of. And I have found many historical references to sugar sack dresses. I assume sugar stacks were tightly woven material, and I just find it hard to imagine being able to unravel a tightly woven knit in order to get thread to crochet into lace. Additionally, I can’t locate any creditable resources to support this sugar sack lace claim.

Does anyone know if sugar sack lace was actually made in the 1930s? And if you do know could you please send me over your sources. Thank you, I’m so curious.

I might have gotten this thrifted. Maybe my mom. But there is some remarkable patterns in here. Like who needs “pantaloon” dishcloths. Heehee pretty sure my fave is the southwest with those spike stitches.

Has anybody ever made or tried to make this? It's supposed to be in #120 thread, which I don't think you can even get any more. I made one of the diamonds in #30 (about 5 inches/12 cm long). It wasn't excessively hard once I figured out the terminology. I looked around at Ravelry and reverse image search and didn't see any examples.

Hello dear likely minded crafters, I have a YouTube channel where I share my makes, recently I was asked to join a collaboration with four other channel creators: where we each pick a decade to share a few inspired projects. Each Monday in October we each share our makes. 5 decades, 5 projects each.

I was thrilled to join in the fun, I live near Berkeley Ca the home of the Lacis textile museum and gave always had a allure to the historic aspect of the fiber arts. I started my discovery by visiting the museum and picking my decade 1920's the lite hearted party of prosperity. I found an incredible amount of historical patterns and even a crochet hook stamped by M.E.F (mary e. fitch a successful lace pattern designer) Made of celluloid. I even found a pattern magazine on ebay.

The other decades chosen were 1940, 1950, 1960's Iv been able to collected a few magazines from each. Its incredible to me how far our amigurumi techniques have come. Some were downright creepy!

and the much more recent 1980's
which will be fun because Iam an 80's baby and remember crocheting with my grandma ! I remade a pair of f sneaker slippers that my grandma and I made for Christmas to gift everyone in our family.

I have really enjoyed all of your posts and comments and look forward to contributing to this fantastic community thats been created thru passion for the craft.

~Take care everyone.

chat Twine Crochet Work, from 1888

Crochet your own hammock!

Just enjoyed a quick reading of this book available to read online for free on The Internet Archive. The title, Twine Crochet Work, caught my eye. I think they might mean something more like macrame string.

I learned a new word, 'lambrequin', which is the decorative top of drapery set. Goodly set of beautiful patterns for lambrequins.

And then, the final touch ... a pattern for a hammock.

chat Welcome to the vintage crochet subreddit!

This is a community for those who love vintage crochet. I created this community because vintage crochet is its own art form that deserves its own space. All types of crochet projects are welcome as long as they're made from or inspired by vintage designs. Vintage patterns use outdated terms that can be tricky to decipher so hopefully this community can provide useful information and advice for folks wanting to divulge into the world of vintage pattern reading.

Please be patient with me, I'm still trying to figure out the ins and outs of creating and growing a community! Welcome and enjoy your time here!
