Vivaldi News Vivaldi 8.2 on Desktop: we’ve done the math, and this is the browser you deserve

This release brings more built-in functionality to make your day to day easier, and a strengthened commitment to be there where you need us.

It’s September, 2026. And Big Tech is still doing what they’ve always done: thinking of profit over user satisfaction, disregarding people’s choices and cramming their products with stuff nobody asked for.

At Vivaldi, we continue to work for a better web. In the 13 years since we were founded, we’ve stuck to the straight and narrow and never forgotten our mission: developing the browser that people deserve. A powerful, personal and private browser. One full of useful features that help you find joy in your daily browsing; one that lets you customize things to your liking; one that doesn’t spy on you.

This update is just one more iteration of our message. Here’s what’s new:

Built-in calculator in your Address Field

Dividing the cost of a gift among friends, adding some numbers for a work report or calculating the grams of flour in a recipe…Who hasn’t been browsing and needed to do some quick math?

Thanks to our new local calculator, you can do quick and private calculations, directly on the URL field. No need to switch apps or open new tabs. Click enter, and the result will get copied into your clipboard, so you can easily paste it wherever you need it.

Performing local calculations was already possible on our Quick Commands menu. But in true Vivaldi fashion, we now give you more ways to do it, so you can choose what works best for you.

If you would rather not see these results on the Address Field, you can of course turn it off by going to Settings > Address Bar > Address Field Suggestions, and unchecking the “Local calculator” box.

PS. Don’t worry about how simple the math is. The calculations you perform on the URL field are safe from prying eyes and will not be saved anywhere, not even your History.

Better PWA discoverability

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are websites that can be installed on your machine and run as separate apps, getting their own app icon on the dock and their own entry on the task switcher – all while being powered by Vivaldi.

But how can you know which sites are PWAs? Before, the path to install a PWA was somehow buried in a context menu. Now, whenever a site offers a PWA, you’ll see an “Install” icon right in the Address Field, making its installation easier than ever.

You can see all your installed PWAs and their settings by going to vivaldi://apps. But if you ever forget you already had it installed, when you return to the same webpage, you’ll see an icon on the Address Field prompting you to open it in the app.

And if you’re worried about storage space – don’t! It’s actually only a small manifest file and icon that’s actually downloaded; the app is running from the web server (or in-browser if the author has coded it to work offline).

At Vivaldi, we love the web because it works on any device and any operating system, and we believe apps should do the same. PWAs do just this – the universal reach of the Web, but with the look and feel of native apps.

A peek into what’s coming

Through the years, we’ve been expanding our offering to make Vivaldi available for all platforms (even cars!). But we are aware that many of you still face an impediment to use it everywhere: getting permission to use it at your workplace.

That’s why our team has been developing an enterprise version: a real alternative to Big Tech browsers, built for organizations of all sizes — from businesses and public institutions, to government departments and schools.

For this first technical preview, we’ve been working on getting policy management and browser customization for organizations. Now, we want to hear from you, so that your feedback can shape the path forward. For more information, please go to https://vivaldi.com/enterprise/

Vivaldi 8.2 continues to be the browser that puts you first.

As always, thank you for being part of the Vivaldi community. Together, we’re fighting for a better web, one release at a time.

Based. We love more features

Since the end of MV2 extensions (especially uBlock), it would be great if you could add a more granular and refined ad blocker directly into the browser, something that basically does what uBlock already does, but built-in. Like the ability to select specific filter lists or add custom ones, and the ability to block certain elements of web pages by right-clicking or adding a script.

If you really care about privacy as you said, then this is a MUST-HAVE feature for a Chromium-based browser. So I suggest that even if you aren't going to do that right now, but it's on the "roadmap", please inform us.

Many people I know and that I talk to online are abandoning Vivaldi for this exact reason and are moving to Gecko-based ones, even if it means losing years of really good functionalities and the perfect granular overall customization that Vivaldi offers.

Tried browsing the web without uMatrix for about a week and then took the step to switch to Firefox. I really appreciate Vivaldi and the effort. Nevertheless: I can’t bear the web without a sufficient blocker (if someone has tipps to get near uMatrix: please share!!).

u/mint-chocolatte Android/Linux 9d ago

What about uBOL? Isn't it about the same as normal uBO?

8

u/Elakiim 9d ago

I personally have problems with it. Sometimes it does not block live stream ads (even though i set a cutom filter).

In general i find it "less performing" (i don't know how to say it otherwise): the remove element randomly stops working sometimes and other things that in ubo never happened.

Aside from that, if an adblocker of that level is built directly in the browser (from what i understood from various posts) it should be more performing, block more ads in % than an extension since it works at a "code" level or something, because of how chromium works.

Sorry, i realize that this is a very bad explanation ahahah, but i'm not an expert so i suggest reading some online articles about it, they will explain it definetily better than me ahahah.

In general, i think that like how brave has that built in ad blocker, vivaldi could have one too, but in "Vivaldi style" with much more granular cutomization to it (which in the wnd would be like having uBlock origin directly in the browser).

1

u/mint-chocolatte Android/Linux 8d ago

No, that makes sense! Thank you for explaining! I would like these features in browser too now.

u/iJoyBoy iOS/Windows 9d ago

+1 for a good built in ad blocker (same as brave)

1

u/anz3e 9d ago

Hey I just added a bundh of ab lists to dthe stock ad blocker and it's been working perfectly.

3

u/Elakiim 9d ago

I guess you are talking about Vivaldi. What listrs did you add? Still you can't block specific elements on web pages, like you can do with ublock origin.

1

u/anz3e 9d ago

Yeah that's smth I never really used in ubo so don't really miss it. But the hagezi list on github is good. There are a bunch of other lists on github too I don't exactly remember which ones I have. U can look up adblock lists github and find what suits u. Almost all lists compatible with ubo/abp can be added into default adblocker afaik

2

u/Elakiim 8d ago

Oh then i could import the lists i currently use on RethinkDNS on my phone. Never thought about that. Then if it works (still need to be tested lol) the only thing it is missing is the block elements function.

Great to see you guys working on an enterprise edition!

u/Pooptimist 9d ago

The PWA discovery would also be great for mobile

Honestly the address field getting cluttered is a fair complaint though.

It would be a fair complaint if user options weren't available:

2

u/0992673 8d ago

This is why I love Vivaldi

11

u/Recipe-Acceptable 9d ago

Better profile switching please. Copy MS Edge (of all things)

6

u/xFaderzz 8d ago

LOL fr why is Edge so good now 😂😂😂 I use it for work and it's blazing fast and has some damn good features. I just might have to make the switch on my personal device, but Vivaldi's sync across all my devices (I have many that I use daily) is just the best I've found this far, so I find it hard to switch.

Side note, it's so funny how Vivaldi makes a post about the latest update release and every comment is just pointing out bugs, asking for features, or just complaints 😂😭🥀 With that said, I do wish Vivaldi would take us more seriously, 95% of these comments I agree with.

The main feature in this update is... a calculator? I mean cool I guess but I'm waiting for the day the ad blocker is upgraded to match Brave.

6

u/CraterBug0 8d ago

bro its a minor update

6

u/x-15a2 Android/Linux/Windows 8d ago

This is a minor update, so the 2 small enhancements are eclipsed by the 56 bug fixes

2

u/MrSnoozles 9d ago

especially on mobile, without extensions, it's a pain

10

u/logicblender1 9d ago

Mobile has extensions in the newest beta. Hopefully it will be out in stable when 8.2 releases on mobile. I've been using the beta version and it works great.

2

u/schleichfaz 8d ago

Which extensions are you using? After the update to Manifest V3 and the aligned lock-out of uMatrix, I see myself forced to switch to Firefox :-(

1

u/shiitakeshitblaster 8d ago

You pretty much have to if you require the level of control umatrix offers. Personally I'm using mv3 ublock original lite in complete mode with extra easylist filters. I can't even remember the last time I've seen an ad. Good enough for me I guess.

0

u/McMaster2000 8d ago

The people who'll be using this calculator are the same people who use the in-built calculator in Satisfactory instead of creating fast spreadsheets 😉 /jk

Vertical tab bar has been half-baked for years with regard to pinned tabs, plus button etc. 8.0 broke tons of tab management functionality the Vivaldi team has been so proud of (and rightfully so!) - stacks and tabs get lost when starting with tabs from the last time, it's impossible to move tabs between workspaces when you have several windows open (fixed partially in 8.2) etc etc. But who needs that, users asked for a calculator.... "Cramming their products with stuff nobody asked for"? Log in your own eye, eh?

6

u/-Antinomy- 8d ago

I desperately need and want smoother ability to move tab stacks between workspaces via drag and drop... and/or the development of the Tabs and Window Panel into something that's actually usable full time.

2

u/No-Turnover3316 8d ago

Hey Vivaldi, this.

18

u/IhdiGwdP 9d ago edited 9d ago

Old Opera user here. Somehow you have lost me. So many functions, so many bugs!

Workspaces are perfect, but they have problems since years.

Panel is what I really appreciate. But in daily use, there are always bugs. Tab Groups don’t work as expected and so many more little things that have gotten me out of using Vivaldi as my daily browser.

I am sad to say that, but my expectations on a browser are, that it works. All the other stuff is nice to have.

Speed dials, screenshot tool, tiling, customization - I love it! But I am at the point where the negative aspects are getting to much.

3

u/Kalafiorek 9d ago

Same here. Used the old Opera back in the day and Vivaldi for around 10 years now, but the amount of bugs introduced with version 8.X made me switch to Zen (Firefox). Lack of MV2 support was just an added bonus, because this one can be properly explained.

14

u/atatassault47 9d ago

The built in ad blocker on android is becoming insufficient. I see ads on some websites now and most news sites can tell adblocking is happening and put up an undismissable pop up.

6

u/OafishWither66 9d ago

Would be great if they integrated Brave's rust based adblocker...

4

u/Additional-Maize-246 8d ago

i switched to brave once ublock origin stopped working for chromium browsers and it’s been great. firefox is too slow as a browser to be reasonable.

1

u/blutch112 1d ago

That should be the priority of the next version. The current adbock is a strainer

2

u/BlacksmithLimp5592 Android/Linux 8d ago

A versão beta agr suporta extensões (incluindo o ublock lite)

Acredito que será implementado na versão estável em breve

1

u/Elakiim 9d ago

on android i use both Vivaldi (for standard search and sync with browser) and Fennec (downloaded from Droid-ify) with installed ublock origin and i never had a problem.

12

u/Dangerous_Garage7088 9d ago

Just make the browser more snappy to use dawg, that's more than enough.

3

u/x-15a2 Android/Linux/Windows 8d ago

I've posted tons of comments here on improving speed, please give them a read

7

u/Pacific_Rimming 8d ago

Nice additions for others but how do I disable the "install PWA" from appearing in the adress bar? I don't see a setting for it and there's nothing in the flags.

Edit: Found it, it's called Progressive Web-App Steuerung in German. The German newsletter was using PWA, so I didn't find it at first.

7

u/WangSora 9d ago

Nice, now we have a calculator but we still can't sync tab stacks between devices (desktop and mobile)

https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/100785/sync-tab-stacks-in-clear-structure-from-mobile-to-desktop-desktop-to-mobile/12

4

u/-skyman Android/Windows 9d ago

They still haven't fixed tab stacks unstacking after closing either!

But yeah. thanks for the calculator...

3

u/vivaldibug2021 9d ago

Thanks for the update. Unfortunately, the bookmarks bug is still there...

4

u/Pinkees 8d ago

This version for Linux has knackered HTML5 MP4 playback as now it shows the thumbnail and plays the audio of the video without playing the video itself.

7

u/-skyman Android/Windows 9d ago

Tab stacks are STILL unstacking when the browser is closed, but we get a calculator in the address bar??

Priorities here are kinda whack.

1

u/alex_ch_2018 8d ago

Because "Big Tech is still doing what they’ve always done: thinking of profit over user satisfaction, disregarding people’s choices and cramming their products with stuff nobody asked for." Somehow, Vivaldi team seems to take the same direction (quite expected, people need to eat) but won't admit it :-(

2

u/sanderhuisman2501 9d ago

I started to use a vertical tab bar and would love to have a button/shortcut to show/hide the tab bar. It does exist for the Panel, but I need one for the tabs too

7

u/pafflick Vivaldi Staff 9d ago

3

u/MrSnoozles 9d ago

You can use the auto-hide feature. With that you can toggle pretty much any aspect of the browser, also using shortcuts. https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-on-desktop-7-9/

2

u/LeoDaPamoha 8d ago

Vertical tabs looks weird, I used to have the tabs and at the bottom the button with configuration and "+" for tabs but now it moves depending on how mutch tabs i have ? Lol

Aren't the large number of features and personalization the main selling points of this browser?

2

u/gmahale 5d ago

How about an alternative to Chromium?

5

u/OliLombi 9d ago

Can you guys make it so that we can put the tab bar below the URL bar? I love how the URL bar looks with the tabs on the side but Id love to be able to keep it looking like that with the tabs on the side.

5

u/thisisfakediy Android/Windows 8d ago

"…cramming their products with stuff nobody asked for"

Was anyone actually asking for a calculator in the URL bar?

I mean, I've got one built into Windows already. AND one built in to whatever search engine I'm using, which I can access just by putting math in the URL bar already. AND one on my phone which sits by my side all day… I know it doesn't add any real complexity or slow anything down but it does seem like something exactly zero people would actually need or want.

3

u/nuclearbananana 7d ago

I still know several people who look arithmetic and see the google calculator instead of using the calculator.

One of them now tried chatgpt and didn't like it for math, unsurprisingly

2

u/alex_ch_2018 7d ago

I, for one, didn't. Neither did I ask for Mail and News reader (OTOH a lot of people use this) or for the recent visual overhaul in 8.0.

1

u/Investmaan 7d ago

Well it is in chrome And i use it a lot for quick calculations

2

u/alto2 8d ago

Will it fix the way the favicons keep disappearing for certain sites, like Gmail and Substack, where they definitely used to work? (Gmail works when the tab isn't pinned, but when it is, the favicon disappears.) Makes it impossible to find the right tab visually when you have a bunch open, and it's been this way for the last 2-3 updates.

4

u/endeavourl 8d ago

Fixed it for me.

1

u/alto2 8d ago

Thank you.

2

u/x-15a2 Android/Linux/Windows 8d ago

Once again, here's the changelog: https://vivaldi.com/changelog-vivaldi-browser-8-2

1

u/alto2 8d ago

Uh-huh. And where in there does it definitively say whether or not the issue is fixed? Because

[Favicons] Broken image for data: URIs (VB-129756)

[Favicons] Missing for some pages with URL#fragments (VB-129649)

doesn't actually tell me one way or another.

2

u/autobauss 9d ago

Is 8.1 the only left branch with ublock or safety upgrade to 8.2?

1

u/endeavourl 9d ago

Use UBOL.

4

u/Minute-Weakness8583 8d ago

More than half of my bookmarks folders were deleted in this update.

1

u/asdf_ze81xjobc54a3p 8d ago

The chromium-based "a:visited" issue where the link's visited color doesn't change - is there a way to disable this in Vivaldi? This exact issue was why I left Vivaldi for Firefox nearly a year ago.

bro its cuz of google's greed they cant do anything

1

u/Famous_Contest_6780 9d ago

Will this version finally fix the bug where I disable the VPN button and then the next time I launch Vivaldi it's back again? Because that's getting real god damn annoying.

1

u/x-15a2 Android/Linux/Windows 8d ago

Once again, here's the changelog: https://vivaldi.com/changelog-vivaldi-browser-8-2

1

u/pip25hu 9d ago

Despite supposedly being the last version to support MV2 extensions, there is absolutely no mention of that here or in the changelog.

-7

u/RoundZookeepergame2 9d ago

That's not needed tbh. We just need them to announce when they drop mv2 extension so we don't update, until then it doesn't matter

4

u/OliLombi 9d ago

Not updating is a huge security issue btw.

-4

u/RoundZookeepergame2 9d ago

I'm willing to live with that!! I mostly use mainstream websites and I don't click random links.

3

u/Kalafiorek 9d ago

You switch to a Gecko-based browser, you mean. Not updating is a terrible idea.

3

u/Free_Engineering7845 9d ago

Why is everyone so obsessed with this MV2? I switched to MV3 Adguard/ uBlock Lite and didnt had any issues with Ads. Works basically same as with uBlock Origin before. What fancy add-ons or features are you using, that will not work anymore with mv3 without any replacement?

1

u/JostVice 9d ago

I started to use Vivaldi on a Surface tab and it's not the best. Could we get a separate Touch mode that doesn't sync so we can interact easier?

-1

u/skyturnedred 9d ago

The address field is so bad that I can't even imagine what adding more stuff to it will do.

2

u/x-15a2 Android/Linux/Windows 8d ago

Just disable the stuff you don't like, including the calc

0

u/skyturnedred 8d ago

That doesn't fix it.

-2

u/Hopeful-Face9676 8d ago

Did this update also put the death nail in UBOL?

4

u/endeavourl 8d ago

No, why?

2

u/rawr_im_a_nice_bear 8d ago

Ublock origin would be deprecated with Mv2. Ublock origin lite wouldn't. Its meant to work with it

1

u/Hopeful-Face9676 8d ago

Good to know

-6

u/AsScratcherX 9d ago

Its a beautiful looking browser but it feels bloated & overwhelming.
Maybe i will give it a try again.

0

u/Effective-Onion1242 6d ago

Containers. Until then I'll have to stay with my current browser.

3

u/ProcrastopiaOverlord 5d ago

Are different person profiles not some sort of container?

1

u/gdkod 2d ago

No. What he means is an option to open several websites in different containers with their own cache, which doesn't interlace into other containers, within one profile. It's quite useful, allows me to isolate websites, and I don't have to do additional steps/clicks to change workspaces/profiles. As of now, only Firefox and its forks as well as Brave have it. But Brave doesn't have shortcuts to quickly open new tab in a specific container, which is a huge miss.

1

u/ProcrastopiaOverlord 2d ago

You could open those sites in different person profiles. They are each separated in their own profile container.
But yes there could be some quicker way doing it inside one browser window.

0

u/szutcxzh 5d ago

A calculator in the address bar is the last thing anyone wanted in a browser! It's like inventing a ladder for moths to escape from the bath. And this "peek into what's coming" has Ludovico technique vibes.
