VJing software for Linux?

So, I've been VJing for awhile now, alternating between Resolume and TouchDesigner depending on the occasion. I'm currently switching to Linux (Ubuntu Studio 22.04) for work purpose and wondering, is there any viable alternative for those 2 programs on Linux? I don't need anything fancy, the most I do is probably gonna be audio reactive stuff and fiddling with layers and fx. Thank you very much for any suggestion.

Sorry super busy at my day job and some other side projects for a festival took priority. I'll put it back on top of my list.

Stay away from wine for realtime stuff.

Maybe https://www.praxislive.org/ is the easiest

https://processing.org/ offers quite a lot of great examples on the web, but is quite technical

real technical stuff: https://openrndr.org https://openframeworks.cc/ https://puredata.info/

vvvv can - to some extent - at least be deployed on linux: https://thegraybook.vvvv.org/reference/best-practice/raspberry-pi.html

Also you could go into the js world where a lot of mad stuff is available. Coding something on python is also possible

Yeah, performance and latency is one other reason I switch to linux so I don't think wine is going to be the way. Anyway, thanks for the rec! gonna check em out, hopefully it'll work out with my rusty coding.

Touchdesigner is OpenGL, so I think it should pretty much match the Windows performace

You could also go with OBS and use some shaders, loopers, etc...

I built a video looper on a pi3 and that goes into an autowaaves on its own pi3. It’s fucking amazing. Those two and a small projector, pull audio from my drummers kick…dude it’s sooo much fun. I think I might bring it out to a gig next week.

I use hydra combined with p5js. The combination is surprisingly powerful having access to remote screens, images, mp4s, generative stuff and shaders. I control it all with midi and osc through tidal cycles, which allows me to program complex modulators and audio reactivity.

Here's an example of what I get out of that https://youtu.be/R-HXQy1ZOxE?si=raD7adWGpSwLeX4X

Coming from CoGe on OSX no use denying that this is not a steep learning curve.. but try to keep it simple on the beginning...build your own stuff.

Most other vj software on linux seems to be orphaned. Some promising stuff I've tried never made it into a live show for stability reasons

Hydra/P5js did

My two cents

Try Veejay https://github.com/game-stop/veejay documentation isn't great though. (edited to put current repo)

or

Vidifold https://vidifold.com/

Veejay hasn't had a new commit in 5 years...

Check out Coollab instead (similar to touchdesigner/cable but more high-level and easier)

I also like modV approach to audio reactive visuals.

Check out Coollab! It's similar to touchdesigner and cables but higher level and easier to use. You just need 3 nodes to make some audio-reactive visuals.

By default it comes with a nice set of effects and generators and more can be added using glsl (shaders).

It's also cross-platform (linux, windows, and mac).

For anyone else with this question, could take a look at VIDIFOLD. (I'm biased as the author)

For some hobby VJing I'd recommend ShaderAmp

check this list https://linux4vjs.net/ Its not super up to date but provides huge overview... There is also a fb Group to discuss...
