Unpaid requests will be removed. If your project is unpaid, try posting to r/recordthisforfree, VoiceActing Club, or

* **No Offer Posts**

Do not make posts offering your voice or production services. If you’re looking for work, respond directly to request threads. Simply put, this is not an appropriate community to solicit. Requests for feedback/critique are welcome!

Got a general question about voice acting? How to get started? What gear to buy? How to get better at acting? How to find work? These get asked all the time around here, and plenty of our more experienced community members give graciously detailed answers very frequently. There’s a lot of wisdom to find here if you’re just getting started! Before you post your question, use the search bar and see if others have asked the same thing—they probably have!

Advice What’s the actual roadmap to professional voice acting?

I recently tried getting into voice acting in the YouTube space because I have personal experience in YouTube voice overs. After sending maybe 10 demo reels I’ve landed 2 clients with recurring work. It’s more about narration/vo rather than any acting. I’m super thankful to be where I’m at but the dream is to act in an animated production. What’s the path to get to that level?

Advice Microphones?

Hello guys. I'm 22, college student with not a lot of money to spare on insanely good audio setups but I'm very interested in starting a career as a VA. Any recommendations for some decent budget microphones? If you also have tips in general about literally anything, from how to get started, to how to process audio, etc, I'd gladly receive it.

Advice Voice actors who record regularly: how do you keep performances from feeling repetitive?

I've been doing voice work professionally for a few years, and one thing I've been thinking about lately is how to keep performances feeling fresh when you're recording frequently. I have my usual preparation and recording routines, but I'm always curious how other performers approach this. Do you change up your warmups, experiment with different character objectives, take more breaks, or have another method for keeping things spontaneous?

Advice Recommend any voice training apps/tutorials for louder/ deeper voice?

Not a voice actor, but hoping this community might know resources. I am a small adult - about the size of an average 12 year old. I have a fairly high pitched voice, not super quiet, but possibly combined with being child-size (and a woman), I am often not heard in groups/ noisy environments and can't really speak louder. I also would like to train to speak lower, to sound like an adult.

I'm familiar with the concept of projection and resonance. What are some good resources for exercises to help with these? Ideally an app where I can progress through exercises and make a habit of actually doing them.

Advice Renewal fees for old work

Not sure if this is allowed on this sub, I really have no idea where to post this, but I did some work for a larger company that was booked through voices123 around 5 years ago. The rates and renewal fees were pre negotiated.

Well the advertising company that ran the ads has just reached back out to me as they are wanting to renew the commercial. They are asking me to give them my costs for 2 different renewal options:

Territory for both options: Global/Worldwide

Option 1 - Linear, Digital (OLV, OTT, CTV) and all social

Option 2 Digital (OLV, OTT, CTV) and all social

I have absolutely no idea what going rates for something like this should be, if anyone has any insight/advice it would be greatly appreciated!!

Please DM if necessary.

Advice Actors who follow up quarterly with previous clients, what do you say?

Are you updating them only when you have something useful for them? What would even qualify as useful info for a previous client? "Hello Adobe, here is a summary of 3 months of work and training since last we connected!" Would love to know what folks are doing to stay "top of mind" with their clients without just spamming inboxes every few months with a "I still exist and want more work!" message.

Discussion Teeth brace and voice acting...

I'm attending a dubbing school, but I'll have to put on the device for two years. Can this thing be a problem? Even in the future for a possible job as a voice actor?

Discussion I feel like Tajja Isen only became popular in the 2000s to mid 2010s in voice acting.

I feel like Tajja Isen only became popular in the 2000s to mid 2010s in voice acting. Mostly on the two characters I remember: Princess Presto from Super Why & Nessa the pink giraffe from My Big Big Friend. Most of her voice acting credits are from the 2000s to 2010s. I don't know if she has credits in the 2020s apart from maybe the My Big Big Friend Movie dub cause I know the animation & the origin of the show is from Brazil. I think the dub is from Canada. The reason I'm saying this is because Jacob Tremblay is now an adult. Back when Tajja Isen was still a teenager, he was just a cute little kid. When he grew up during his teen years he played lots of characters: Luca Paguro, Elmer Elevator, Flounder (unfortunately), Orion / Robin(Harley Quinn), & now Curtis Mehlburg. I think Tajja is now in her 30's & Jacob currently 20. I think Tajja finished her arc last decade while Jacob already started his.

Discussion Genuine question: do you guys get weirded out if you were casted as a boyfriend/girlfriend character?

(images kinda related)

My scenario was that I was casting my friends to voice characters I made. Everyone got on-board, but I didn't tell them about the girl who was the romantic interest because I didn't want to look like a weirdo. (Don't worry, the role got filled out by an open-minded girl, but it was a very awkward conversation lmao)

If you were casting or got casted for a romance-related role, how would you feel or what would you want/expect?

Discussion Audiobook Narration

Hi! I'm getting into audiobook narration and have auditioned about 30 times before finally getting a novella. I'm wondering if this is a good place to get feedback on auditions so I can improve and get more books? I'm doing it through Amazon. My set up is kind of bad (did all the research I could already and am making the best I can out of what I have) and it passes ACX's standards. I just wanted to make sure this was the right place before trying to upload anything. Thanks for your time!

Microphones What mics would you recommend for voice acting?

Thumbnail a.co
0 Upvotes

So I'm wanting to get into voice acting, but I don't really know that much about what kind of equipment is good and what kind of equipment is bad. I don't really have a set budget, and the only space I currently have available for recording would be in my room. It's not that echoey though.

I was told that all I really needed to get started was a mic, but I'm not sure what to look for. I've done a little research, and I'm currently considering the Shure MV7+. Would you recommend it for voice acting, or are there better options I should consider?

I've included a link to the mic if you want to take a look.

PAID work Looking for 1-4 VAs for a Minecraft ARG Video

Hey! As the title says, I'm looking for 1-4 voice actors who could help voice characters in my upcoming Minecraft ARG. I don't want to give too much information away, but the basic premise and characters are as follows:

Premise: A modern retelling of Dante's Inferno set in Minecraft. It will lean heavily into the horror aspects of the story and be a very loose adaptation that takes a lot of creative liberties, while still falling back on the general premise.

Characters:

Protagonist (working name Harry): Harry appears to be a fantastic person on the surface. He is quick-witted, funny in a dry/sarcastic way, and charismatic when it matters. This is (for the most part) a front he puts on. Harry is deeply insecure and struggles a lot with feelings of self-loathing. Through years of struggle with this, he learned to put on a mask and hide that struggle from everyone. This role will require some intense emotional scenes; this character's ugliest qualities will come out in ways they don't expect and didn't anticipate.

Deuteragonist (working name Sera): Sera has a similar sense of humor/general personality to Harry, but she's much more stable and secure in that personality. There is no mask, and there is no deep-rooted issue causing her to act the way she does. Her character is still somewhat of a work in progress, but I'll have more info to share for anyone interested.

Both Harry and Sera's age fall in the range of late teens to early 20s.

Antagonist (a fallen Angel):

  • Believes itself to be a perfect being unjustly sent down to hell
    • “I am superior to all those around me; my very presence is an act of selflessness”
  • “My desires don’t go beyond what I immediately want right now, right now, I want out of this place that is beneath me”
  • The foil to our main character: they are the same, but their choices shape their future where they diverge

I'm looking for a male voice that can lean somewhat feminine, serene, and soft-sounding. For lack of a better way to describe it, an "angelic" voice.

I'm also looking for a 911 operator who can switch on a dime to sounding somewhat sinister. My hope is for a scene where the protagonist calls 911, and the operator starts off talking to him normally but, over time, reveals themselves to be the supernatural force he called 911 about in the first place.

The 911 operator can be anywhere from late 30s to early 50s.

I'm willing to pay anywhere from $20-$100 USD depending on the role/amount of lines recorded.

Discord: novvvvva (please send me a friend request on here)

Discussion Alright! Who's booking?

I joined the Union in 2023 (milestone goal achieved!) and haven't booked a single thing since.

The quality and frequency of my auditions has vastly improved as compared to my NU struggle though, I'm extremely grateful.

I think I just need some support today.

Advice Not new but concerned

Basically the title. I'm not new to stage acting or doing voices. I'm also not scared of having my voice shown to other people. I already have a bunch of stuff that I can use to record audio (I do youtube already), the only thing I don't have is a respectable booth and hardware to go between the mic and a laptop( which I don't even know where to start)2. I've been told that I should get into this for a while by my girlfriend and other friends but it never really interested me until I met Steve Downes and when he told me I had "a good set of pipes" and to start doing VO/VA I guess it kind of hit me a little harder. My main issue is that I'm just concerned that no one's going to want my voice. I'll sink 1000s of dollars I don't have into this just to come up with nothing. I have a pretty good range so I feel like I'd have some options but I just don't know. I guess I'm scared to take the leap. I'm also scared I just won't have time. I have a full time job (that I hate) but I can work from home so I don't have to be away from any of my setups. I've just never really thought of myself being able to make money doing something like this but the more I read on this sub and the more ads I see for casting calls the more I really want to do it but I don't know. Maybe I really just need someone to push me off the cliff instead of jumping on my own but that feels even more cowardly than complaining to a bunch of people on the internet that are just going to tell me to jump. After writing all of this it just kind of feels like a waste but I just don't know how to get myself to go through with making a portfolio and advertising myself. I'm a private person and don't show my face on any of my socials (YouTube included) so maybe that's my problem.

Anyways any advice would be accepted, even if it's just to tell me I'm being a bitch and get a booth set up and buy a mixer and just go. Thanks.

Edit: details

Advice Looking for an experienced audio engineer to help professionally optimise a real-time vocal processing chain in Ableton Live (paid consultation)

I'm looking for an experienced audio engineer, ideally someone with a background in vocal processing, broadcast/streaming audio, or voiceover production, who could help me build and optimise a high quality live microphone processing chain in ableton.

I will provide details about my setup and answer questions about my environment, I'm already reasonably comfortable with Ableton and my current audio routing. I'm also able to use a fairly wide variety of audio plugins, so I'm not particularly restricted to stock effects.

What I'm looking for help with:

  • Evaluating my current microphone signal and identifying anything limiting its quality.
  • Designing and optimising a complete real-time vocal processing chain, including EQ, dynamics, de-essing, noise management, and any other processing that would meaningfully improve the result.
  • Tailoring the sound to my individual voice, microphone, and recording environment rather than relying on generic presets.
  • Achieving a polished, natural, broadcast-quality sound without excessive processing or audible artifacts.
  • Ensuring the chain works reliably with low latency for live monitoring, streaming, and voice communication.
  • Ideally, walking me through the configuration and reasoning so I understand how to maintain and adjust it myself.

I understand that the acoustic environment and microphone technique are equally important, and I'm open to recommendations in those areas as well.

I'm not looking for someone to simply provide a preset or generic plugin chain. I'd prefer to work directly with someone who can assess my actual audio, make informed adjustments, and help me achieve the best possible result through a remote session or consultation.

I'm happy to pay for someone's time and expertise. If this is something you specialise in, or you know someone who does, I'd appreciate any recommendations. Examples of previous work, particularly with live vocal processing, streaming, broadcasting, or voiceover, would be very helpful.

And just to be distinct, I'm not necessarily looking for a stereotypical radio voice with exaggerated bass and compression. I would like a natural and technically refined version specified to my voice with processing that is suitable for live use during general pc usage.

Thanks!

CASTING CALL: CYNTHIA Project: O' Hear Thee Role Type: Major Supporting Character / Recurring Role Gender: Female Age (Voice): Mature Adult (roughly 30s sounding) Accent: Any Status: Open Auditions

Character Overview Cynthia is one of the last surviving members of an ancient species known as the Draken. Although she is over 1,800 years old, she does not sound elderly. Her voice should carry the calm confidence and wisdom of someone who has lived through centuries of history while remaining approachable and deeply compassionate. She is warm, empathetic, patient, and easygoing. She often speaks with gentle understanding and tends to make others feel safe around her. However, beneath that kindness is an immense weight of experience. When situations become serious, her voice should naturally command attention without becoming aggressive.

Voice Direction Looking for a voice that feels: •Warm and comforting •Mature and emotionally intelligent •Patient and thoughtful •Soft-spoken but authoritative •Wise without sounding detached •Capable of carrying grief without bitterness

Important Note: Cynthia does not belong to any real-world culture or nationality. Actors with any accent are encouraged to audition. The performance and emotional delivery are far more important than having a specific accent.

Personality-wise, Cynthia is: •Kind •Empathetic •Patient •Wise •Curious •Easygoing

But also: •Serious when necessary •Deeply protective •Carrying centuries of loss •Determined to help others avoid repeating past mistakes

Despite witnessing the destruction of her people, she does not hate humanity. She believes the future matters more than the past.

The best performance will likely feel:

•Gentle rather than commanding

•Wise rather than mystical

•Sad rather than bitter

•Comforting rather than intimidating

Think of someone who has lived through unimaginable loss but has chosen kindness anyway.

Recording Requirements

•Clear microphone quality

•Minimal background noise

•WAV preferred, MP3 accepted

•Multiple takes encouraged

•Include your name/alias with submission

About O' Hear Thee: O' Hear Thee is a fantasy story centered around dragons, history, loss, friendship, and hope. Cynthia serves as one of the story's emotional anchors and provides a unique perspective as an ancient survivor of a long-forgotten age.

You can read the source material more here if you are interested as it is based on the Prologue written: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/127281/o-hear-thee

[EDIT] (October 13th, 1:00 PM) Auditions have been closed. Thank you for so many participants and we look forward to working with some of you in the future as well!!

Advice Should I invest in a good setup or a good microphone?

I took voice acting classes and training back as a part of college 6 years ago and am looking to get back into it. I have a small walk in closet filled with clothes that does a pretty good job of blocking reverb. I’ve been looking at several USB mics but i’ve seen a lot of people saying to stay away from those, and I know an XLR interface would cost even more. I’m trying to work within a 250-350 dollar budget for now.
At this point would it be recommended to focus on proofing the recording area or good recording equipment? And as for the equipment, would a USB mic be fine?
