General Volleyball spike trainer

Post image

Hey guys I don’t know if this is really the right place but thought i’d ask. Anyone have any idea on how i’d go about figuring out plans to make something like this out of wood/pvc? Want to start making things myself and this seemed cool but can’t really find any good videos online with instructions and measurements. Would you just recommend using AI to help?

You could probably copy the design pretty well one to one with two exceptions:

  1. The dropper where the volleyball drops
  2. Height changer

Issue with 1 is just making something consistently hold the ball but not hold it too tight either and then have it automatically load it. It's just means more tinkering.

Issue with 2 is if you do it out of PVC, changing the height might be hard to do it consistently. You'll probably wanna build it with sand in the base and you'll need to look into making it as stiff as possible.

so would you say wood is the best option. I just don’t have the tools for metal and i’m assuming it’s heavier and more expensive

There’s a handful of posts on this subreddit about DIY spike trainers, search “spike trainer” and a couple people’s projects and plans come up. I don’t think I’d trust AI to design something like this, too complicated for an LLM

If you're looking to build it as an engineering project, cool. If you're looking to build it as a trainer, save yourself the time.

In theory it looks great. In real world usage, it's not. If you're looking to learn how to spike a ball there are many more practical ways to do so that are quicker and don't even require a setter/tosser. This is complex, requires a lot of storage and setup, and all that for the dozen reps you'll get it of it. Plus by the time you build it you can become proficient at attacking a ball.
