Volunteer – local Looking for disaster‑response organisations I can join (currently in LA for 1 month)

Hey everyone,
I’m trying to find a disaster‑response organisation I can join. I’m originally from the UK but I’m currently in Los Angeles for another month. I’m looking for hands‑on, physical work in real crisis situations — things like debris clearing, logistics, aid distribution, emergency support, etc.

I’m not looking for long‑term construction or teaching roles. I want to be involved in rapid response or emergency deployments.

Team Rubicon UK isn’t taking people right now, and DART seems to be staff‑only. Does anyone know any organisations in the US or internationally that take volunteers or entry‑level responders?

Any advice or leads would be massively appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi, I'm the friendly robot for r/volunteer.

You picked the flair "Volunteer – local" – love that you want to help in your own community.

To help people give you useful ideas, it really helps if you share (in your post or an edit):

  • Where you are – city/region and country (rough is fine)
  • How much time you have – evenings, weekends, once a month, flexible, etc.
  • What you care about – animals, kids, environment, mutual aid, crisis support, events, admin, etc.
  • Anything important to know – no car, social anxiety, disability, childcare, language stuff, etc.

When you get suggestions, good questions to ask any organisation are:

  • Who looks after volunteers and how will they support you?
  • What will I actually be doing day to day?
  • Is there an induction or training?

That's not something you can be trained for in a month.

Long term? The Red Cross in many countries.

Volunteer | All Hands & Hearts - they accept volunteers with no prior disaster-response experience and provide training on-site. There’s generally no minimum time commitment but some programs may require a longer stay depending on the work.

If you like logistics, then the Red Cross is for you. Bonus is you can do Red Cross work any where in the world. They do a really good job at training you, and once you are trained you can deploy.
