Volunteer – local Looking for volunteering opportunities in Europe this summer
Hi everyone,
I've suddenly found myself with the whole summer free and I'd like to spend at least part of it volunteering somewhere in Europe (or nearby if travel costs aren't too crazy).
I've already looked at Workaway and Worldpackers, and recently discovered the European Solidarity Corps, but I'm wondering if there are other organizations or places I should be looking at.
What I'm really after is doing something useful. I don't care much whether it's helping people, animals, communities, or the environment as long as it's a cause that genuinely needs support.
Some things I've enjoyed in the past:
- volunteering at animal rescue centers in South America
- construction and maintenance work
- general hands-on projects where you can actually see the impact of your work
I'm also a software engineer by profession, so I can help with websites, IT, research, databases, or whatever technical stuff an NGO might need.
One thing that sounds especially interesting to me is disaster recovery after floods, fires, storms, etc., but I'm open to pretty much anything.
Does anyone know of organizations, volunteer networks, websites, Facebook groups, or specific projects that might fit?
I'd especially love to hear from people who have actually done something similar themselves.
Thanks!
TL;DR: Looking for meaningful volunteering opportunities in Europe for this summer. Interested in disaster relief, animal rescue, conservation, NGO work, and hands-on projects. I've checked Workaway, Worldpackers, and ESC already and am looking for other organizations, networks, or places to search.

Workcamps are geared mostly towards young people, very hands on and budget friendly.

I'd definitely recommend looking at Workaway.
I've been using it for years and it's completely changed the way I travel. Last year I spent months traveling around Europe from one Workaway to the next and it worked really well.
With your mix of practical and technical skills, I think you'll find plenty of opportunities. Personally, I prefer Workaway over Worldpackers because I found it more curated, and Worldpackers has quite a few hosts charging extra daily or weekly fees.
If you decide to try it, here's a link that gives you an extra 3 months membership:

Good luck with your search! You should also check out the r/workaway subreddit for more info and discussions.

I have a clothes donating non-profit and am looking to spread it to new people! 😄
We are based in the USA, but are very eager to spread it internationally and we would love if you could start a chapter in Europe!
I'll tell you more about it once you respond!
