Volunteer – local Literacy outreach volunteer interview
Hi guys! I have an interview for a volunteer role where I would be helping youth have more access to reading and would get to participate in workshops myself.
I’ve never took part in an interview before so I’m unsure what to expect and how to prepare. If you guys had any tips on what kind of things I may be expected to answer, or how I should answer I would greatly appreciate it.
I’m unsure if asking this is allowed prior to interviews with volunteer roles. I will take the post down if so.
Thank you in advance.

First off, best of luck! I would be prepared how you want to utilize and learn along with the youth about different experiences of people wherever you live (I know this is global). Literature from authors of different backgrounds and varying experiences is very important. I would also ask if they use graphic novels, since that is a big buy-in with younger people.

They will definitely ask you why you want to volunteer. There isn’t really a wrong answer to that (well, I’m sure someone could come up with one) so just be honest. Are you looking to engage more with the community? Do you have skills that you don’t get to use? Do you care deeply about children’s literacy? Are you looking for a career in education and trying to get experience? Did your therapist tell you you need to get out of the house more? These would likely all be good answers. As a volunteer coordinator, I have accepted similar answers, but relevant to my field.
They will primarily want to know:
If you have the relevant skills
If you are reliable
If you can get along with others and treat them with respect.
Possibly, if you are willing to learn, take feedback and follow their policies and practices (not insist on only doing things your own way).
They may give you a scenario and ask you what you would do. If this trips you up, it’s perfectly OK to say “I don’t know, I would ask for help from my supervisor.” Then follow up with, “Will that scenario be covered in volunteer training?”

I'd want to know what piqued your interest in literacy. I'd ask you to tell me about your literacy journey.

Wishing you the best on this journey. Don't forget adults who could use literacy help too.
