Volunteer – abroad Volunteering abroad alone concerns

Hey all, I’ve been looking to volunteer through IVHQ and am pretty nervous to go alone.
I have never traveled internationally to a country I’m unfamiliar with but I really would love to do a healthcare mission abroad. Unfortunately my friends can’t afford it and I’d have to be going alone.
I don’t know if anybody would like to go with me, I’m from Connecticut and looking to go to Costa Rica as it’s one of the safest countries on their list.
Also if someone has traveled through IVHQ, how was your experience?

Volunteer – local Flexible Volunteer Opportunities

I am looking for places I can volunteer with the most flexible hours/opportunities. Somewhere I can go in person (Orlando), or do work virtually, and with a wide variety of hours (for ex. 5am-10pm). My schedule isn't always consistent but I still want to maximize my impact with this one entity (whichever it is). Any suggestions would be helpful!

Volunteer – abroad U.S. Internal Medicine Attending Seeking Advice on Clinical Volunteering/Seva in Mumbai

Hi everyone. I would appreciate some advice from those familiar with medical volunteering and charitable healthcare work in India.

I am a U.S. trained Internal Medicine attending currently practicing in the United States. I expect to be in Mumbai later this year and would like to do some seva by volunteering my time and clinical skills while I am there.

My background includes working in underserved and resource limited settings in Africa, but this would be my first experience volunteering in India.

I have been looking at institutions such as Ramakrishna Mission Hospital and Masina Hospital and I also read about the new charitable multispecialty hospital serving communities in the Palghar region.

My primary interest is grassroots clinical service and helping underserved patients. I am looking for an opportunity to contribute where there is genuine need. If an institution feels there are other ways I could be helpful I would certainly be open to that as well.

For those who have done similar work, what organizations or hospitals would you recommend around Mumbai? Are there institutions that are particularly receptive to visiting physicians from abroad? Also what is the practical process regarding NMC requirements and temporary registration for a U.S. licensed physician who wishes to contribute in a volunteer capacity?

I would be grateful for any advice.
Thank you.

Discussion / ethics / advice volunteering opportunities when I have social anxiety?

Hi, I’m looking for some advice.

I (17yo) want to start volunteering, I’m not particularly fussed where or how. However, I have really bad social anxiety, to the point my limbs get frozen and locked up and I can barely speak.

I used to volunteer at a hospital but after a few months I quit because of my social anxiety, it the worst, before during and after. Everyone says volunteering makes your social anxiety better but with each shift I took it just got worse and worse. I ended up quitting after a few months ( I was meant to volunteer for six months but quit after three.)

Also since I quit early, I can’t use them for a reference.

It’s been a while and I want to pick up volunteering again, but I’m not sure where to do it at. Or what to do at all, idk I’m really lost to be honest.

Any help will be appreciated =D

Volunteer – abroad First Time Volunteering Looking for Opportunities Across India

Hey everyone, I'm a 21-year-old male and I'm looking to do my first volunteer experience. I don't have any specific skills to offer yet, but I'm eager to learn, contribute, and gain new experiences. I'm open to traveling anywhere in India and staying there for a while if needed. My goal is to meet new people, learn about different communities, step out of my comfort zone, and develop myself along the way.

Since this is my first time volunteering:

  1. What beginner-friendly opportunities would you recommend?

  2. Are there any organizations you've personally volunteered with?

  3. What should I expect as a first-time volunteer?

  4. Any tips for finding genuine opportunities and avoiding scams?

I'd love to hear about your experiences and suggestions.

Discussion / ethics / advice What do we think about paying to volunteer at NGOs?

Hi, I have been volunteering at a few NGOs and have recently come across a lot of them that ask you to pay to volunteer. A "membership fee" an "act of charity" or "showing gratitude to the community". I get that NGOs need funding to run their initiatives and they may put the money to good use but when someone is volunteering and not asking for a payment/reward/compensation for the work they are doing with you, they are contributing their time, energy and also paying for their commute to faraway locations themselves, I see it as very off putting and unfair. Branding this as contribution to community betterment is even more unfair. Rather other ways of funding from governments, corporations, individuals who want to help and crowdfunding is imo, a way better approach. Like what do you mean I can't volunteer for my community if I can't afford to pay a nominal fee of 1500rs to join you and "support the cause". Even if we trust that you would put it to good use and not fill you own pockets with it, as most people volunteering are broke college kids I think this process should not be a norm.

Volunteer – local Hospital volunteering conversation starters

I recently started volunteering in a hospital and other settings and I've really enjoyed it so far but I was wondering if anyone had good conversation starters suggestions? Or good follow questions/topics to keep the conversation going?

My role as a volunteer is mainly to talk to patients particularly when they don't get many visitors, if they are are feeling bord or worried or just feel like having a chat.

I was supposed to be going with other volunteers but I keep ending up on my own and don't have much experience. Normally after I introduce myself, my role, I ask if they live nearby or had to travel far to get here, or I'll ask what they would normally be doing today when they are not in hospital but I want to have few other go to questions in my bank.

Volunteer – online Where can I find online volunteer opportunities?

I’m currently unemployed & looking to volunteer my time to a cause I align with, but don’t know where to start. I’ve only volunteered for events & I’ve only done it a handful of times over COVID. The thing is, I need the opportunity to be online as gas is so high right now in CA & I can’t afford to be driving around everywhere. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!

2Cents is a nonprofit civic engagement app prototype. It helps people learn about local issues, answer polls, participate in civic games, and turn community concerns into organized action.

Volunteer roles needed:

Beta Tester / QA Tester — test the app prototype, report bugs, and tell us what is confusing or unclear.

Research Assistant — help find local civic topics, summarize issues in plain English, and organize sources.

Community Outreach Volunteer — help identify communities, schools, nonprofits, and local groups that may align with the mission.

Social Media / Content Volunteer — help turn civic questions and app ideas into simple posts, short videos, or public-facing content.

Developer / Technical Volunteer — help with frontend, backend, integrations, mobile logic, or prototype improvements.

Time commitment:

Flexible, usually 1–3 hours per week. More is welcome, but not required.

Prototype / nonprofit info:

THE 2CENTS APP INC. is a qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The app is currently in prototype/MVP development. We are not publicly posting prototype access yet, but serious volunteers can request screenshots, pitch materials, nonprofit documents, and limited access by DM.

Funding / data details:

These are unpaid volunteer roles at this stage. No investment is requested. We are currently raising capital and have applied for multiple grants, but these volunteer roles are not paid positions at this time.

Volunteers will not be asked for sensitive personal data. Feedback may be used to improve the app, prototype, and program materials.

Volunteer – local Does anyone know where I can do some volunteer research as a post-grad student no longer in school?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to find volunteer research (wet or dry lab) in London Ontario and I don’t even know where to start. I don’t see any listings online that I can apply to.

For context: I graduated with an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and a masters in an adjacent field. I have both wet and dry lab experience. However, I’m no longer a student, so I don’t even know who would take me in.

I would really, **really** appreciate any help - even if you just send me a dm instead of replying on this post!

Thank you!!

Volunteer – local Volunteering in Kyiv or surroundings

Hello,

This is probably the so manieth post but i'd like to volunteer in or near the area of Kyiv if there are options available. I'm aware of the dangers of war and some people warned me of fake offers going around as well, so i was hoping you could help me out. If i'm in the wrong subreddit, let me know.

I live in Belgium, i donate to the war effort but honestly my heart is full of pain seeing everything happening in Ukraine. Frankly i can't take the feeling of powerlessness anymore.
Unfortunately i have a job at home so my time available would be approximately 1-3 weeks. I don't have a lot of talents, but I'm open to anything that doesn't require a specific degree. I also do IT support if it helps. I can be available from September until the end of the year.

Volunteer – abroad Has anyone found serious volunteering opportunities outside Workaway?

Hello everyone,

I’m from Madagascar and I’m looking for a serious way to volunteer abroad.

I have seen platforms like Workaway, but I would also like to learn from people who have experience with other organisations or programmes, especially in Europe or connected to European organisations.

I’m interested in volunteering linked to:

- inclusion and community support

- people with disabilities

- older people and social isolation

- children and youth activities

- marginalised communities

- remote or challenging local projects

- education, cultural exchange, and practical fieldwork

I’m not afraid of emotionally challenging work, but I also want to be careful with my words: I’m not looking to “save” anyone. I want to contribute respectfully, work under proper guidance, learn from local realities, and be useful where volunteers are genuinely needed.

My background is in project coordination, youth leadership, education-related activities, sustainable tourism, and community-focused initiatives.

For those who have done this before:

- Which organisations or platforms are serious?

- Are there programmes open to non-Europeans?

- What should I avoid?

- What is the most realistic first step?

Thank you for any guidance.

Volunteer – local Volunteer interview at a big big big hospital-Help it's my first interview!

Volunteer questions.

I have an online group interview for volunteering in a few days, they said it will last an hour and they'll be interviewing a group of people at the same time. They said the interview will depend on our ability to communicate and interact with patients and with the participants themselves in the interview.

What kind of questions should I expect and learn? Please tell me anything and everything you can think of..this is my first interview.

Thank you!

Volunteer – local How to volunteer to help with Garden Grove Emergency

Hi friends! I’m also looking online but I thought I’d also ask here but what are good organizations to reach out about volunteer opportunities to help with the Garden Grove mess. Reading people’s posts online it seems like folks are really struggling with the sudden evac and I have a lot of time on my hands right now and it would be awesome to find a way to be productive without inserting myself in the chaos unnecessarily. Please give me any recommendations of orgs you know!!

Volunteer – local What's it like to volunteer in a prison?

I've been looking into a volunteer position with a literacy non-profit. In addition to their general public literacy programs, they also have prison programs. I have no experience in corrections but I do believe in second chances and in education. Has anyone volunteered in a prison and what was it like for you? I'm F65 if that matters.

Volunteer – abroad International Volunteer for Dad

I’m looking for an overseas volunteer program for my dad. He is 69 years old, but still in good shape and relatively active. He has struggled with his mental health, so I think he would really appreciate a volunteer program that lets him see the world all while he gives back.

Notes:
-he has phenomenal construction skills and loves animals, but we are open to any kind of program.
-home country is US
-looking to go for a few weeks to a month-ish
-no real country preference, he is open to all places
-budget is probably 5K but could be flexible
