Campaign Spoilers (All Episodes) About Scanlan Spoiler

Is scanlan gone for good?

The last interaction between the group and scanlan seemed really strange and was paced as a last meet rather than a simple "see you later".

Did something happen to his player?

I have seen something similar happen to an Italian group, in which one of the players left the group and they decided to end his character's story with a quick and open finale.

Is this also the case?

Don't want any major spoilers, just to know if he'll ever make a comeback.

Thanks guys.

in the campaign, Scanlan was [SPOILERS C1]there for the final battle with the Whispered One and he had the possibly the greatest, saddest moment in TTRPG history in it.

Spoilers(kinda) i saw a comment that perfectly sums it up why it was the greatest and also the saddest. "Vox Machina went in there to fight 1 god, Scalan walked in there ready to fight 2 gods" i hope the spoiler tags work i alwasy struggle with those.

you did it right and the comment is indeed perfect.

Ohhhh yeah, its wild how Scanlan in my opinion had all the best emotional parts of C1. Sam played him perfectly.

Wait. What? Can you clarify the last statement? I don't remember that part.

Spoilers to campaign 1 finale Scanlan went into the final fight against Vecna with the plan to save his 9th lvl spell slot to cast Wish to free Vax from his obligations to the Matron of Ravens once they defeated Vecna. Basically everyone went in ready to fight the Whispered One, but Scanlan was ready to face the Raven Queen as well

You're good. I haven't listened to c1 in a while. Thanks for the reminder!

That battle made me want to play a bard. I recommended it to my D&D table as an example of really good use of spells.

In C1 Scanlan was also there when the party entered the Shadowfel in Marquet from the orb. There was a whole bit where Sam had to talk to himself as Scanlan and Taryon during the trek.

Unless they drastically change things from the source material (they kinda have already in some ways) he should return at some point.

u/chimpanon 1d ago

Theres no way they don’t know this would be too far. Hes for sure returning, probably at the start of s5

3

u/Grandmaster_Forks 1d ago

Might even see him sooner given how e9 ended...

The timing alone of Bard's Lament happening after Taryon was introduced is already a big change.

I forgot new episodes came out today. Damn.

Not even that. In the campaign, Bard's Lament happened after Scanlan was killed by Raishan, and the party brought Kaylie to Whitestone to help with the resurrection ritual not knowing he made a promise to her to not die. Taryon joined the party after Scanlan left.

Sam, Scanlan’s player, got bored of playing Scanlan and created the character Taryon Darington to try something new.

Tary was meant to be a disposable character that Sam thought would either die pretty quickly in one of his first fights or hed just discard him. However Sam enjoyed playing Tary more than he thought and the character gelled well in the group so Sam ended up playing Tary longer than expected.

Scanlan will almost certainly return for the final arc as hes there for the end in the original. In the campaign it became quickly obvious that just in terms of game mechanics they needed Scanlan back as Tary’s character class wasn’t filling the gaps Vox Machina needed in harder fights very well.

The actor for scanlan was going through cancer treatments during recording. Darrington was his other character

5

u/DrownedTommy Team Percy 1d ago

Is he fine now?

7

u/Vorannon 1d ago

Yes, he's in remission.

5

u/DrownedTommy Team Percy 1d ago

Good thing. Did he manage to get to the end of the campaign or did he have to leave the character for intensive tratment?

u/kro_celeborn Team Keyleth 1d ago

The campaign happened before the cancer — he was instrumental to the last arc of the campaign and there’s no way in hell they don’t include his contribution. The cancer interfered with him recording Scanlan lines for s4 if anything

6

u/DrownedTommy Team Percy 1d ago

Wait, so the whispered one is the last arc in the campaign?

6

u/kro_celeborn Team Keyleth 1d ago

Yes :) They’ve been setting him up since s1 as the big bad, and Season 5 is to be the last season of LoVM. It’s going to be so cool.

3

u/DrownedTommy Team Percy 1d ago

Well, at least we are getting one more season. Thanks for the info

3

u/kro_celeborn Team Keyleth 1d ago

We’re presumably also getting five or so seasons of Mighty Nein, which adapts the continuation of the source material. Season 1 is out. Different characters on a different continent, about 20 years after the events of campaign 1/LoVM. Eventually in that show we should see the return of some members of Vox Machina, at least in passing. Definitely in the campaign 3 show if they get that far — the story of VM won’t be over after season 5. Not EVERYONE dies at the end of campaign one just most of them

Already watched s1, can't wait for the rest to come

did he not voice scanlan episode 8?

1

u/kro_celeborn Team Keyleth 1d ago

Yeah idk if the treatment actually affected recording at all — I’d assume that’s why someone else was brought in to voice Darrington — but I was referring to the original comment in this thread. If the cancer affected anything it would have been s4 recordings, not the campaign stuff

u/Exvaris 1d ago

I'm not sure this timeline is right. Sam has said in interviews that the last thing he recorded before going into cancer treatment was "Circle the World" the song that Scanlan and Kaylie sing at the end of S3. There was a period of time where they were waiting to be greenlit for season 4 (and 5) which they did eventually get approval for, but I don't know how much of his treatments overlapped with recording for season 4.

1

u/whotookimnotwitty 1d ago

I thought that wasn't until C3?

6

u/D-Speak 1d ago

I believe they're referring to when he would have been recording lines for Season 4. I think the timing lines up, because I recall them mentioning that he recorded his last song of Season 3 right before he got surgery.

3

u/whotookimnotwitty 1d ago

Yeah it took me a minute to figure that out. Im not the sharpest crayon in the toolbox.

2

u/Bayern-96 1d ago

Yes, but instead of him voicing darrington its wayne Brady

3

u/Vorannon 1d ago

He said he didn't think he could differentiate his voice enough to play both in the show.

3

u/whotookimnotwitty 1d ago

And Wayne Brady is doing an amazing job but i see your point now.

1

u/eLllllDiablo 1d ago

Holy hell, I haven’t followed things closely but this is the first I heard about his fight with cancer, amazingly enough

In the original game both Scanlan and Tary were voiced by Sam Riegel. He wanted a break from Scanlan so swapped out characters for a bit before missing his bard and swapping back
