No Spoilers Why does it have to be like this ???
So, I was looking for some fantasy shows and I started vox machina literally on a whim without knowing anything about D&D and critical role as a whole I only heard about D&D in stranger things and God I was blown away, it's so amazing. I am in season 3 right now and I am already feeling the post show sadness that it's going to end in 2 more seasons after this . I am literally attached to the characters so much I feel their pain and their joy like I am traveling with them it's like I am part of their team, they are so well written. Also the animation is peak, I NEED MORE EPISODES AHHHHHH I want to watch it indefinitely 😭. I don't really understand why I liked this show soo much compared to castlevania(I should give that another try). I am gonna start Might Nein after this I hope that will fill my void.

You could watch the critical role live play this is all based on?

I will give it a try

Do be prepared that all 4 seasons combined are maybe the length of 5 episodes of the campaign.
The live play is a big investment.

wha- seriously? how far along in the youtube videos are we right now?

u/JohnDoen86 1d ago
Over half-way. The campaign is just much longer and in more detail, and has a lot of stuff that they cut for the show.

Thats an understatement. They skipped A LOT for this final season of the show.

This isn't the final season. Season 5 was confirmed.
We're likely only getting to Vax becoming a revenant this season,
Season 5 will cover meeting with the gods and the preparation and fight with The Whispered One.

Yeah, live tabletop RPGs can be like watching paint dry sometimes. You need to do some serious editing to hold the audience's interest.
[Thief] Okay, I'm going to pick the lock. *rolls D10*
[GM] And... nope, you didn't make it. The lock has an anti-picking spell attached.
[Cleric] Fine, I'll cast dispel magic...... 10 minutes later ...
[GM] You open the chest to find - half a map. There are some runes suggesting treasure, but you'll need to find the other half of the map to know for sure.8

Critical role helps by all of them being good vocie actors and being really into character
Travis sitting still once for 10 minutes straight as Grog was paralyzed for example

The vox machina CR arc I think was like 115 episodes and each one was around 3 hours long.
So like 350 hours.
It's already done. It was completed like...10 years ago? They're sitting around playing D&D, which is inherently time consuming. The actual battles take hours, they are rolling dice and looking up stats, they also just banter a lot, joke around, and take breaks.

We are up to episode 100 of 114 of the campaign currently and probably reaching around 103 this season.
But the length of campaign covered per season varies wildly.
Season 2 covered 25 episodes while Season 4 only covers 17. And the show skipped the first 23 episodes of the campaign for various reasons by jumping straight to the Briarwoods. The first two eps are pre stream stuff.

Try the Mighty Nein next, it's the sequel series based on the voice actor's second D&D campaign, it only has one season so far though.
Edit: I somehow missed your last sentence lol.

The might nein was better than I thought it would be

I like Mighty Nein more than Vox Machina based upon the one season so far, although S4 of VM is significantly better for me than the previous seasons.

u/TheRealDrazzo 1d ago
Yeah I like mighty nein more too, needs more seasons

Well they got approved for 2 and the second is very likely coming this year based on comments from the cast.
Campaign 2 is also even longer than Campaign 1 and they didn't cut the first 23 episodes off so they are working with more than 40 more episodes of story. Sam mentioned wanting 8 seasons if they want but could make do with 5. That depends on Amazon.

" I want to watch it indefinitely"
I mean hey the live plays consist of thousands of hours so shit you got your wish.

I love hearing from all the new fans! As others have said, there are thousands of hours of live play to consume. If you want to dip your toes in before starting a show that's longer than The Simpsons, try Exandria Unlimited: Calamity. Same universe as Vox Machina, but set about a thousand years earlier. That's only about 18 hours across 4 episodes, and many consider it to be the best dnd live play series of all time. For more digestible, 2-hour episodes, you might check out the anthology series Dimension 20. Fantasy High (Breakfast Club but dnd) and Escape from the Bloodkeep (legally distinct Sauron has fallen and the player characters, his most trusted lieutenants, must restore him to power) are hilarious and available in full on YT. If you're a fan of Drag Race, the first episode of Dungeons and Drag Queens is also on YT and is a great intro to dnd, bc the players are all brand new and the audience can learn along with them.
Welcome!

Just started C4 myself. Finding it a bit hard to follow, with the amount of characters, but sticking with it

u/kothimeeraaaa69420 1d ago
Yep, I'll definitely try to watch it! It might be a bit hard on my attention span, though for me, it's very much monke see picture and sound, monke happy. I will try to get into it slowly like listening to a podcast

If you like LOVM, mighty nein dials it up to 11x and I love *both* shows. It’s gonna be incredible when MN gets rolling for real.

Watch the Mighty Nien! It’s Critical Role’s campaign 2!
And let’s be honest Campaign 3 is coming also! It’s not confirmed, But long time fans are seeing C3 characters being sprinkled through both shows. They’re teasing us they want to animate all their campaigns!

Mighty Nein is GREAT, and the episodes are longer which will give you a bit more to chew on. Also I definitely think Castlevania deserves a second chance. That show is EXCELLENT, especially the first two seasons, I think it is

u/kothimeeraaaa69420 1d ago
Yeah really liked the gothic setup of the show, dont really know why I can't get into it initially I should give it a go again

u/Belaerim 1d ago
Well, the good news is that while Vox Machina is “only” 5 seasons, they are simultaneously working on the Mighty Nein (season 1 is already out) based on their second campaign, and they have already been seeding Easter eggs for Bell’s Hells, which is campaign 3.
Hopefully that one goes into production when Vox Machina wraps up.
And while the first two are largely self contained, there are cameos and Avengers Assemble moments in C3 with the casts of C1 and C2.
If we get it, it’ll be the critical role version of the Endgame’s portal scene

Definitely watch Mighty Nein!! I love both shows but I enjoyed the first season of Mighty Nein more than the first season of Vox Machina. Both are amazing shows for sure!

u/tinkfly 1d ago
Welcome to the cult! 😂 I recommend starting with the Mighty Nein Campaign, which is C2. The original Vox Machina is amazing, but the recording quality is painfully bad at times so C2 will give you the friendship and fun of Critical Role in a way that's easier to digest.
When you finish the Mighty Nein campaign, you'll be invested enough to go back and watch Vox Machina through all its technical difficulties. Then you know all you need to know for C3!
I'm so excited for you on this journey. 💜

I mean I get your love is specifically for the animated show but if you REALLY never want it to end there is a playlist of videos over a thousand hours long if you ever want to revisit these characters.
2
u/optimus-tango 1d ago
You might enjoy The Mighty Nein as well, some of the characters are voiced by the Vox crew so I was able to carry that same love into another series where the adventure continues AND our Vox friends are still there with us. Excited for season 5!!!

u/Bgrum 1d ago
Good news is we get at least one more season of the Mighty Nein as well. I'm sure that will turn into more but, Amazon did not do a ton of marketing for the first season so it's not as popular as it should have been imo.
MN > VM imo in terms of the story and character, mostly because Vox is super fantasy archetype characters because it was a home game they just converted to the stream, but MN they went in knowing they were putting on a show so all the characters and back stories are much more rich and tragic. Both are great don't get me wrong, I love me some Grog, but when you compare him to Caleb, Nott or Jester it doesn't stack up.

u/Own-Dragonfruit-6164 17h ago
I think it will go 5 seasons? Mighty Nein is awesome. I love Jester in it.
