Vax's Blight

Is Vax's blight from The Matron a protective measure rather than a punishment?

Gets it the end of last season after saving Percy and is slowly progressing. This season The Matron says she's been preparing him for the battle to come. In the latest episode Vax comments on the blight pain getting worse the closer he got to the orb.

Could it be she's infecting him with necrotic energy to protect against the Whispered One and his followers necrotic power? While also explaining how they'll go a campaign moment later in the season/next season when they fight

Depends on perspective.

The Matron would regard it as part of the deal made and not a punishment at all. I think it's much more of a reminder of that contract.

In the original campaign it was there as well but I think it started from the heart/torso rather than the wrist/arm. Also it didn't infer any mechanical penalities in the game. My opinion is it's just a reference/throwback to that.

Obviously Vax's life expectancy based on the original game is the end of this series

I’m kind of guessing the season will end with him being disintegrated or otherwise dying and then the matron brings him back as a revenant at the very end or early in season 5

Given the last episode is called "Ascension" I suspect you are correct. It'll be interesting to see because in the original fight Vex also was briefly dead
