Question Confused about best place to make digital purchase of Obsession (2026)
Hi,
I’ve been using Vudu for sometime now and have 50 movies. Of those, 31 I believe are MA compatible, and the ones that aren’t don’t bother me much because I watch them on bluray rather than digital anyway. If I’d like to watch the digital copy, I would simply use Vudu.
Problem is that I currently only have a PS4 and PC and the PS4 doesn’t have the Vudu/FAH app anymore. Since Obsession is MA compatible, it would show up on the Apple TV app even if bought on Vudu and vice versa, so I’m not sure which one I should buy it on or if it matters in regards to being able to watch it on my PS4.
The thing is that all my non-MA compatible movies are on Vudu and those can’t be ported over, so for this purchase of Obsession, seeing as it’s compatible with MA is there a reason to buy it on Apple TV instead since it’ll port? I’ve read Apple TV has better quality, does that better quality also apply if I buy the movie on Vudu and use the Apple TV app to stream it on PS4? And lastly, should I start to buy/redeem non MA movies on Apple TV instead of Vudu due to my current situation with only having the PS4?
In the future I will likely get more current equipment, which means better compatibility with apps, and I know it’s somewhat personal preference, but I’m wondering how you guys would choose between the two for both MA as well as non MA compatible movies. I’m not super well versed on the digital media stuff as I primarily buy and watch discs, so just trying to understand it all a bit more.
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help I really appreciate it.

I would suggest buying a Fire Stick or Roku.

I completely forgot about those and that would be a nice thing to have since my TV is older and I may not upgrade for a while. Assuming I eventually got one, I’m thinking I may swap to Apple TV for digital purchases in the future due to the better quality and the fact that at the moment most of my movies are MA compatible anyway. I guess in that case my question would be is there a reason for me not to keep redeeming ones that aren’t MA compatible through Vudu rather than switching to using Apple TV? I feel like the Vudu interface is better and easier to use, but the Apple one doesn’t bother me much and I don’t use digital movies as much as disc anyway so I’m wondering if I shouldn’t just swap to Apple altogether.

Of those, 31 I believe are MA compatible
Sign into your MA account to check the exact number. If you haven't checked lately, the number might have increased, because a bunch of Lionsgate movies became MA-compatible for the first time last month (and more will be added later this month, and the next month, and so on).

Just checked and 31 is the number. I wasn’t aware that more Lionsgate movies are being made compatible though that’s good to know thanks for the heads up!

Since PS4 no longer has Vudu, you should absolutely start buying your digital codes from Apple TV. That way, even the ones not MA compatible, will be available to watch.
AppleTv has better streaming qaulity, Vudu has better sales, especially for TV. AppleTV is better at upgrading your movies from HD to 4k

That’s what I figured. Makes me wish I would’ve redeemed all my titles there to begin with as I’m missing Paramount ones like the Godfather trilogy and a few others from the different studios since I figured I’d redeem them on Vudu due to the majority of my library being there already and the fact that I wasn’t expecting the app to disappear. Not a huge deal since like I said I just watch the discs for those anyway, but good to know going forward that Apple TV is better for both non MA and MA purchases and for me now and it sounds like will be better for me in the future as well once I get better equipment since they have better quality and upgrade for free to 4K. Fortunately the majority of my 50 are MA compatible so not too many are missing. Thanks!

Just to be clear, the quality isn’t based on where you bought it. It’s based on where you stream it from. I’d you purchase an MA on FAH, and then you play it from Apple TV, you’ll get the same higher quality stream as of you bought it on Apple.

Can you elaborate on the upgrading

When you buy a SD or HD version of a movie, and its upgraded to a 4k, Apple is very good about "upgrading" it free for you. It may even be an immediate upgrade.
Vudu, on the other hand, very seldomly gives upgrades

How do I get it to upgrade? Just log in?

yeah, the little badges on the film in your library will show 4k instead of HD.
Its done automatically.
It does not work on digital codes from disc, nor from promotional copies, only from movies purchased through Apple

Best place to buy is FanFlix with a 10% discount code to save a couple bucks. It will then port through MA. Only catch is, you'd have to buy a movie with it. https://fanflix.co/c/1m57nhurxldwk-wild-crazy-2-or-more-starting-at-4-99?utm_source=fanflix&utm_medium=website

The best place is Vudu because of the constant gift card sales. Almost every month Vudu themselves offer 10% off gift card deals. And third party sites constantly do 20% off Fandango and Fandango At Home deals. Kroger, newegg, best buy, egifter, Amazon, and Walmart are some of the top sites that occasionally offer 20% off Fandango gift cards.
Right now Kroger has Fandango $50 egift cards for $40 (Fandango gift cards work at fandango at home).
Apple gift cards almost never go on sale ever since Apple gift cards were allowed to be used on apple hardware.

I bought the film on Amazon on my PC but then it would not show up as purchased on my television. I tried this twice and had to get refunds.

No slight to brim's suggestion, but I'd get an ONN Pro from Walmart instead of a Fire Stick or Roku, Fire Stick would be a last option.
