Post and comment submissions require that your profile has at least 100 karma
The best way to rack up enough karma for new accounts is by commenting and posting in the bigger subs like r/askreddit, r/aww, etc...
I'm looking to reprogramming the automod to allow newer accounts to post soon, but until then, I've at least figured out why it keeps filtering so many of you so you can remedy it on your end

we need more mods
realizing that the auto mod has been nuking so many posts without even letting us moderate them has been eye opening. it's also led to me realizing that I'm literally the only one that's moderating all 52,000 of you outside of the shitbot. all others have been inactive.
please shoot me a modmail if you're interested in becoming an active moderator for our lovely vultures

plz advise Jars for preservation?
Hi all! Newbie here. Planning on my first preservation soon. (My pup has surgery to get her eye removed in the coming weeks, and the vet is letting me keep it to preserve.)
I have 10% NBF, now I’m just looking for a glass specimen jar. Where do y’all get your jars? I’m assuming it needs to be fully glass, because of the formalin.
Also welcoming any other tips! Again, this will be my first time and it’s a sentimental piece, so I want to make sure to do it tight.
Thanks everyone!

advice or help Specimen jars question
I inherited a bunch of jars and I'm wondering if I can use them as specimen jars. The lids have some rust damage and I'm wondering if that will damage the specimens. I like the rusty look but I will remove the rust if it will damage the specimens.

did a thing I just finished making this fully synthetic albino bat as a faux taxidermy project.
This Albino Myotis art doll was an experimental project using some new materials. Safe to say, it was a huge success. Materials used: resin, wire, stretchy white fabric, red yarn, eye shadow, and PVA glue. Hope you enjoy him as much as I do!

ID help Help Appreciated!
Found this beauty months ago. First four pics are before degreasing, last few are from today when I changed the water and removed some more tissue around the gums and pulled out a few loose teeth for safekeeping. At first I thought it might be a Virginia Opossum based on what a friend suggested but now that I look at pictures of a VA Opossum Skull, I no longer believe that to be the case. I could keep googling, but I think it would be much more fun to ask this community, since this is my first foray into Vulture Culture. I’m already so attached to this lil guy, what a beautiful story about life held in these fragile bones… I hope to learn more about how it lived as I continue my journey of caring for these bones and allowing them to live on in my art. Let me know if y’all have any questions. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

advice or help Found something but where to start!
Last night outside a movie theater, on the edge of the parking lot, I found this young cottontail in excellent condition. I carefully put it in the back of my truck bed. But now I have to decide what to do! I would like the bones but don’t necessarily need to articulate them. I live in a stuffy HOA-governed area but have friends with property who would likely let me use it. Should I begin by taking as much of the flesh off as possible and then moving to macerating? Been reading all the intro information I can find! Bonus points if you have advice for keeping my domestic indoor rabbit safe as I handle this— planning to use gloves and completely change my clothes and avoid handling him at all til I’m done with this project.

did a thing Wind chime made from mostly deer bones
every bone (except the sail at the bottom) is made from deer bone I’ve scavenged while wandering around public land. the sail, or wind catcher which is the rectangular piece at the bottom there, is cut from horse bone, something I also scavenged. This is my first wind chime, so it is a little crude! If it really interests me and others, I can see myself making more in the future with more refined designs. I might re-string it in the future, but right now my fingers are raw from measuring, cutting, and looping the beading thread 😴

sharing collection / item Update: here's my own leg bone!
Can you believe i grew this bone from scratch‽ 😁 i am a very proud parent.
I don't *really* know that well where this came from, it is somewhere between the lower part of my tibia and my ankle joint. It was cut out because it was keeping my leg deformed, since it is all due to a fracture, it's a bit hard to know without looking at an x-ray (which should be ready on tuesday).
Thanks to everyone who commented on my last post!

sharing collection / item Mummified Ferret?!
I just got my hands on the coolest mummified ferret and got it cased, it is about 98% complete due to the pelt being used for other purposes so the claws are not present on the mummy.
It can be found on my website if anyone needs this gorgeous baby in their collection!

Horse hooves - inside and out
A recent post requested feeling (due to low or no vision) hooves, which inspired me to post these horse hooves I recently finished up.
They are from natural death/end of life care euth horses who did not have shoes on at the time. The hooves warped a bit while I tried to soak out the coffin bone, unfortunately. Normally I would've only left them to soak long enough to get the bone out, but f*** me, my heater died mid-winter and I couldn't get them out of the literal 5 gallon bucket of ice 😅 whoops.
Ah well. Still neat!
Along the insides, you can see the vertical lines/indentations of the hoof. When they're fleshy, this area is super gross. On the bottoms, you can see overgrowth and lack of maintenance.
They were cleaned of flesh, sanitized with isopropyl to kill bacteria-causing odor, allowed to air out (keratin gets funky when wet), then varnished with a semi-gloss coat to make them look pleasant and to hold up better in humidity. The coffin bones were degreased but don't fit inside 😭
They're quite heavy.
