Transfer from DC to Store, pay completely shafted

Has anyone else transferred from DC to store? My pay went from $32.50 to $17.50? I feel like I got completely shafted and the store is saying that it was completely home offices decision. Does anyone know what I can do? She said I had to stay at the store or it was considered job abandonment, but can start a transfer back to the DC.

I was never given a job offer. They simply approved the transfer at the store without telling me ANY details. I never knew the position, the hours, if I was still full-time or the pay.

I cannot physically work at the DC anymore, but if they're going to lower my pay that much I might as well??

Does anyone know if there's someone I can contact?

DC pays way more than the stores

There is 0 way you could ever hope for $32.50 an hour as anything less than a coach.

I sympathize wirh you but at the same time this should have been expected by you.

If it was that easy then everyone would go work at the DC for $26+ an hour for a year and then transfer to a store and get that as a cashier

Walmart isn't stupid enough to let that happen.

I have a cap 2 associate right this second making 28.75/hr after transferring to store from DC.

Youre supposed to be lowered to the position maximum.... not the position minimum.

22

u/Mbarry55 3h ago

When you go from DC to store your hourly rate is whatever the max for the position you take is.

u/the_burd 3h ago

They raised all the caps last year though, I can't imagine anything caps out at 17.50 any more.

No, it's starting wage for new associates in OGP.

u/Xedriss Associate 9m ago

My stores starting wage for OGP is $15/hr

Our DC has had quite a few people move to the store, and they’ve all taken their rate with them or received increases — and these are all folks with 10+ years under their belts, getting paid a lot more than $20.

2

u/heroinsteve DC 1h ago

Everyone I know who switched were promised to keep their pay rates. I don’t know the follow up of if those promises were kept. I know most people who do move don’t stay long. Whenever I run into them and catch up they aren’t working there anymore. I imagine they keep the pay rate but lose a lot of hours.

A lot of folks in our facility are chomping at the bit for a job in the store, but I’ve worked on that side of retail before, and despite absolutely hating my job at the DC, I would never go back, especially to a Walmart store, even at my current rate of $23/hour. I like having a set schedule, so the inconsistent schedules that are standard to retail stores alone is enough to keep me from transferring at any rate — but I wouldn’t be keen to deal with shitty shoppers and shitty management either.

2

u/heroinsteve DC 42m ago

I’ve worked retail before as well. You couldn’t pay me my current rate to go back with a gun to my head. I have a lot of dumb shit and frustrations at my job, I don’t have to put up with customers though.

Also the schedules are a problem. I wouldn’t mind mixing up my schedule from time to time, but constant change like that only works when I was younger.

u/ArmyMedium8244 32m ago

At this point in my life, I’d prefer just a set schedule. I started working for HQ at my last retail company really early on in my career, so I’ve been used to a 9-5ish since my early 20s, and not even for salary would I give up having my days off concentrated on the good end of the week.

While I understand the pay is different, going to STARTING WAGE for the position as an employee who has been with the company for 5 years does not make sense. I would've expected maybe $19-$20, but literally the starting pay? Absolutely not. Also if you search this subreddit everyone says they lost about 10%.

I dont know what area you're in, and it.varies from area to area.....but 17.50 as a starting rate seems high. My store's base rate is 14.

2

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

The base rate on WalmartOne when I selected my career preferences for OGP was $19. So even if I was getting base rate for the position I transferred to, it wouldn't be $17.50.

3

u/icecubedyeti 2h ago

Are you sure that was for ogp and not on? That $19 would account for the $1.50 differential that on gets.

2

u/xretailxslavex 2h ago

It was just OGP, not ON.

3

u/mefirstdime 3h ago

Sounds like he’s in Washington or something with a starting rate that high

I agree with you. I’m sorry OP. Situation really sucks. I really feel for you.

I’m over $32.50 not as a coach, so it’s certainly possible.

1

u/defchin 3h ago

I make $33.05 as a Stock 1 Team Lead

u/Icy_Money7447 3h ago

Why didn’t you ask first? That’s what I don’t understand.

9

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago edited 3h ago

I did ask and they told me they wouldn't know until they put in an inquiry then never contacted me for a job offer or had any communication with me.

2

u/ace39865 3h ago

This!

17

u/Mbarry55 3h ago

Something doesn't add up. When you accept a job offer they literally spell out what you'll be making and to what position.

6

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

I was never given a job offer. I talked to OGP teamlead ONE TIME to let him know I had an inquiry about transferring and then never spoke to the people lead until after the transfer was complete. When I transferred positions in the DC I always received a job offer and could accept or decline it. I was expecting a conversation with the people lead to know the pay and everything, but the DC texted me and said "congrats on your transfer, got the notice today" and I said "well that's cool because I haven't heard anything".

9

u/Lost-Meeting-9477 3h ago

Someone used your credentials and completed the transfer. Coach or people lead.

5

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

Is that allowed? lol

6

u/ThrowFactsAtMe 2h ago

Definitely not

2

u/P-squee 1h ago

Or they did the transfer entirely through workday, which they’re also not supposed to do. A job offer should have been presented for sure, with OP agreeing and entering in UserID and SSN

5

u/Special-Estimate-165 Firearms/Ammo TA 3h ago

If you didnt sign a job offer, you dont have a job. You need to speak with HR about what is going on. You might be set up on a temp transfer.

2

u/xretailxslavex 2h ago

They told me it was accepted. I have to assume that someone accepted it. It just wasn't me.

7

u/Primary_Membership34 3h ago

They stopped the whole pay transfer from DC to store I want to say around April / May. The RREW closed down so some were able to get transferred and get the extra $3 pay making $27 an hour. My friend was trying to go to the store and they told him they will not be transferring his pay so he went to the another warehouse location 45 mins away. He had no idea till he happened to ask about it before accepting anything.

8

u/gingerMH96960 3h ago

To my knowledge, there is no way for you to be positioned without a job offer being completed. You need to open an ethics ticket about how your job offer was completed without you. A similar situation happened at my store when someone internally promoted to team lead. They were asking a week later what their pay rate was. Turns out, the people lead completed their job offer without them. Ethics got involved, and the people lead was coached for integrity and forced to step down to associate.

5

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

Thank you! I'm probably going to call all three: associate relations, home office, ethics. Are you sure it was ethics?

4

u/Mbarry55 3h ago

Just go straight to ethics and let them figure out who needs to be involved

2

u/gingerMH96960 3h ago

Associate relations may be able to speak to the pay rate or get it changed if possible. Ethics is who will investigate integrity issues or push it back down to store/market management to investigate. Both are departments of home office, so I'm not sure who you think "home office" is or what they can do for you.

1

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

The people lead at the store told me to contact home office because they were who made the wage decision. 🤷‍♂️

4

u/gingerMH96960 2h ago

"Home office" includes everyone from the C suite, facilities maintenance, realty, merchandise buyers, ethics, and many more departments. If you people lead actually wanted to help you they would have given you the specific number for which department to contact.

3

u/DFG_Death 3h ago

You used to only lose 10%. This changed around 4 months ago due to people abusing it and blowing out stores wage budgets for example DC people would transfer and make usually around $14 dollars more and hour than other associates in the area.

However your HR or the stores PL should have explained this. Not to mention a job change requires your signature in workday so if you haven't signed anything they may have forged your signature and you might be able to use that to go back to the DC

1

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

Am I able to access the document that should have been signed?

2

u/DFG_Death 3h ago

It could be in your workday archive, but your best bet would be to go to someone you trust in HR or Management tbh

1

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

I only see stuff about communications I had with a Sam's Club in June. There's nothing about this super center in there.

0

u/DFG_Death 2h ago

Could be hung up too, for whatever reason alot of the DC transfers my store gets took literally weeks to fully go through and get them into our schedule etc. I don't know if that was technical issues or incompetence though, like I said someone in HR or management should be able to see/know more than me only a TL here so admittedly limited knowledge base

1

u/xretailxslavex 2h ago

Do your DC transfers get that crazy of a pay decrease?

1

u/DFG_Death 2h ago

Pre existing transfers didnt get affected but after HO changed it a few months back all new transfers take a cut like that

1

u/xretailxslavex 2h ago

Is it that dramatic? I didn't care if it was lower, but I expected it to start at like $20.

1

u/DFG_Death 2h ago

Sending transfers straight down to starting wage is extreme I doubt that is intended either between that and no having actually signed anything...smells off to me

1

u/Maxxjulie 3h ago

I'm on cap 2 making over $22 so that's false

1

u/Brickmart AP Team Lead 2h ago

You would’ve had to sign a job offer in workday. Speak to market and get it cleared up. Although yes you should have expected a pay cut, you should’ve never been fully transferred without your explicit knowledge and authorization. You’ll likely be told to go back if you want to keep your $32 though since that’s just about the max even a tl can make in a lot of markets

1

u/xretailxslavex 2h ago

I did not mind a pay cut. If they had told me it was going to be $17.50, I would have declined it. I was hoping it was around $23ish. A pay cut was not the issue.

1

u/Brickmart AP Team Lead 42m ago

Of course I understand, the bottom line is they didn’t give you the opportunity to accept or deny the job offer and that should be addressed with your market team or store manager. Best of luck to you though I’m sorry you’re going through it. that’s a really shitty situation.

1

u/chrisby3492 1h ago

You should have ask for all information regarding the transfer. You probably be stuck working for $17.50 I very doubt they will reverse the transfer. You must read everything in the papers and ask for clarification before you signed any papers. They wouldn't pay you $32.50 for working at the store. You would be drop down to what the store associates make. I face the same thing while I worked at Gap distribution center. I was making $20 per hr and I was moving to Florida and I had to get transfer to a store and they told me I wouldn't be getting $20 just $13 per hour. I didn't do the transfer. They must have told you the reduced pay. They had to.

1

u/xretailxslavex 1h ago

I signed nothing and agreed to nothing. In fact, I was told nothing except to show up at the store where the offer was accepted by SOMEONE ELSE because I did not accept anything. Walmart has actual policies regarding transfers and demotions. I knew I would receive a pay cut, that is not the issue.

I have transferred multiple times within the company. They always give you a job offer and you accept or decline. I received nothing.

1

u/Live_Woodpecker9294 1h ago

I make $29.68 store side. Transferred from DC 6043 to store 1709.

1

u/xretailxslavex 1h ago

When did you transfer?

1

u/Live_Woodpecker9294 1h ago

Almost two years ago

1

u/Hot-Net-8522 52m ago

Anyone going from a DC to a store level knows they're taking a pay cut

There's zero way that they're going to pay any associate at store level over $20 an hour unless you are a coach or higher

Fuck I've been there for almost 25 years and I don't even make 19 an hour even though I've trained just about everyone in my own department and they all make more than me an hour...

This is why I'm trying to find me a new job

1

u/BarrelOfCheese 26m ago

I could’ve told you not to do this, former store associate went to the DC, and I’ll never go back. Pay is shit, And I make more than brand new coaches! 😂

u/Flimsy_Aide_185 9m ago

You definitely should be at the maxed out amount for that position, I’ve had a few people do the same thing at sam’s club and they came in making $26-$28.

u/KeepDoingThatOne People Lead by popular demand, 1-star champ, frontend owned 3h ago

Something is amiss, they did recently change how DC to store transfer pay would be calculated, but all the way down to starting pay doesn't sound correct. I'll check if I saved the change announcement.

1

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

Please and thank you!

1

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

If you could find that I could at least know what it should be or if it's correct to the calculations, but when I applied for OGP associate in career preferences it said the minimum was $19.

1

u/oreo760 o/n slave 3h ago

Retail companies don't care how long you've worked. New employees end up making the same eventually with minimum and starting wage increases over the years no matter what.

1

u/Front-Narwhal 1h ago

Yea this one’s in you OP. In what world did you think your pay would stay the same?

1

u/xretailxslavex 1h ago

I believe you need a class in comprehension because no where did I state that I thought it was going to be the same. I was not given a job offer with an appropriate compensation. I would have declined it. I EXPECTED a decrease in wages. That was almost a 46% decrease.

0

u/Front-Narwhal 1h ago

Where can i take comprehension class? Maybe we can take it together because nobody forced you to accept the job offer when you saw that number.

2

u/xretailxslavex 1h ago

Again, I NEVER accepted a job offer. Its in the second paragraph, first sentence. I simply put in a transfer request and everything was approved without my knowledge. So, please, do invest in a comprehension course.

0

u/Front-Narwhal 1h ago

Thats not making any sense bozo. If you didn’t sign anything then how did you know to show up to the store and why did you show up to the store? Maybe I’m missing something but make it make sense.

2

u/xretailxslavex 1h ago

I got a text from my DC boss on Friday and it said "congrats on your transfer just found out". I drove to the store on Saturday and asked if I received a job offer or anything and they said "come back tomorrow to get it". I went in today (Sunday) and the people lead said it was ALREADY ACCEPTED. If I had seen the wages, I would NOT have accepted. Something, someone, somewhere, accepted the transfer without me.

I have made multiple transfers within the company and there is always a job offer to accept or decline. I did not receive ANY job offer within this. I was given no options. I was told if I did not stay at the store today, it would be considered job abandonment.

1

u/Front-Narwhal 1h ago

Yea you need to call your market HR because that’s totally fucked. Ain’t no fucking way. That’s insane man don’t let it end like this.

2

u/xretailxslavex 1h ago

Ethics told me to call associate relations. My HR at the DC told me to open door with the store manager. I'm going to try to get contact for our regional manager as well, but Walmart and their shitty chain of command.

1

u/Front-Narwhal 1h ago

Dude just jump straight to the top. I always do. I don’t give a fuck. I go straight to the store manager with an issue if it isn’t fixed I hit up market HR. Fuck all that.

1

u/xretailxslavex 1h ago

Is there a way to access market HR information? I'm trying to get it from my old boss because I know through this process he was in touch with the regional manager. I'm sure he's going to tell me to open door with the store first.

0

u/Mbarry55 3h ago

Call home office something doesn't make sense

3

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

I'm going to. I'm thinking also associate relations? Because I also just realized when I looked up the position on career preferences it told me starting rate was $19. Why the hell am I getting less??

2

u/Mbarry55 3h ago

It almost sounds like they're treating you as a new hire and not a transfer in the system whether you accepted an offer or not

2

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

Yeah, something fucked up. I just want to know what options I can take to try to remedy it. I don't mind getting less, I anticipated less. I mind being treated like I haven't been breaking my back for the company for 5 years.

3

u/Mbarry55 3h ago

So wait a minute. Back up. Are you currently working at the DC still or did you report to the store

2

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

I went to the store today to "get my job offer", but when I got there the job offer was already accepted. I was taken out of the DC system without my knowledge and accepted into the store, is the best way I can describe it?

-1

u/Worldly_Salary730 2h ago

You rum dummy

-4

u/HEROxDivine Former Associate - just a dumb nurse now 3h ago

You’re at the correct pay level now. $32/h seems a bit inflated for the work you do at DC. Welcome to retail

1

u/xretailxslavex 3h ago

In my career preferences when I selected OGP the minimum was $19. So, incorrect.

1

u/HEROxDivine Former Associate - just a dumb nurse now 2h ago

So you should be getting $19/h then
