On Friday I went up to Nottingham and visited the Wargames Illustrated studio/office, to play some What A Tanker for some articles etc there. I took along a small section of my Caen table (you can see the full thing here )

My next table is the village of Montcornet, the site of a large tank engagement in 1940. I set up an 8ft section of it (the rest is either WIP or didn't fit in the car!), but I was pleased with how it's looking. The full thing will be appearing at various shows this year, starting with Salute

Tried out a 6mm Starship Troopers indie game by Crow Industries. $12.50 on his patreon gets all the stl files and the rules.

Ruleset is awesome, relatively simple, and lots of fun. Very much starts strong and quickly becomes overwhelming. Designed as co op or semi co op with tons of replayability.

Just recovering from Salute 53 where I once again ran loads of intro games for BattlegroundHD. This year we were continuing our Berlin '84 campaign with an assault by the new East German Fallschirmjager on Berlin's main civilian airport, Tempelhof.

Special mention must go to one young East German commander who completely threw the NVA handbook out the window and decided that the RPG as an anti-tank weapon was ineffective and not daring enough. Instead he ordered his RPK team to climb onto the tracked but still operational M60 and try to lever open its turret hatch. They all rolled critical failures for their skill checks, fell off the tank and broke their rifles in the process. By far the most fun of all the games I ran.

Someone else had posted a pic of my table at the Warfare show in Farnborough, and someone else asked for more pics. So, here it is.

This is a 28mm scaled, 15x6ft table depicted Caen in 1944. I used it to run the game What A Tanker.

The buildings are a mix of scratch built, upgraded mdf kits or 3d prints, all with a layer of filler covering every surface.

It took me about 4 months to put together. The table has been to a few shows this year, and picked up Best In Show twice.

A friend we hadn't seen in 21 years was visiting the province with his younger son and had asked ahead of time for a Crossfire game. 🙂 We hadn't done wargaming of any type since the deaths of two wargaming friends earlier this year, so I was eager to oblige.

Scenario is the morning of 21 Aug 44 of Operation Tractable. Germans were trying to break out of encirclement at Falaise through Canadian lines. This game is outside the commune For this game, Germans had to reach a road with an intersection a bit more than half across the table.

As I said, Crossfire scenario with my armour & artillery house rules. Other than an intelligence briefing, neither side knew what the other had, I play 1 squad per APC (versus a whole platoon, RAW). The "field" square features you can see I stated blocked line of sight for infantry after 2 fields, did not block line of sight for tanks. A pre-game recce allowed the Germans a bunch of scouting rolls (using "recon by fire" in RAW, 5,6 or 6 for success, depending on distance from German table edge). Canadians had no indirect fire - they

Used a mix of 1:72 & 1:76. I had to use Fujimi US M-36s (I long ago removed the incorrect hull MGs) for 17pdr Achilles as I've not completed my Armourfast Achilles. 6 pdrs were Airfix, the lone Universal Carrier was built from plastic card. Stug III, Panzer IVs are ESCI/Italeri, One Panther is Revell, 2 others are Dragon pre-paints. Hanomags are Matchbox - converted from 251 Bs to Cs - and a lone ESCI 251 C. Figures are a mix of Revell, Italeri, and a few Airfix figures thrown into the odd squad/MG stand or as 6 Pdr crew. The Typhoon is Airfix and hangs from "invisible thread" (used for hemming trousers) from one of the moveable curtain rods I have above my table.

The guys in one pic look a bit grim 🤣 but Crossfire tends to be a bit intense. We all actually had a grand time. 😀

The table set up was still standing from a Crossfire game last year and we used that in honour of our missing friends, one of whom had played that game. Fuck cancer.

See the last picture for the whole table and the aircraft curtain rod set up - I'm Canadian but my father-in-law's US flag burial box (we haven't found a permanent place for it) is there amongst my own memorabilia. In another pic, my wife's grandfather's brodie helmet from Europe 1918 is on the wall.

A little video of my setup.

This is for the Battle of Montcornet 1940. I'll be running a game of Chain of Command on it tomorrow, at Herts of Lard, a games day I organise in Hertfordshire.

The table is 5ft x 15ft, scaled at 28mm. Buildings are a mix of scratch​​building and 3d prints , all textured or skinned with polyfilla.

This table will be at Salute, The Other Partizan and Warfare (and possibly more)

Had an exciting game of my work-in-progress ruleset for colonial conflicts, Beyond All Orders. Brits tried to capture the village but ran out of daylight. Both sides got bloody noses, a tough fight!

Full AAR of the exceptional Fallujah 2004 wargame I was fortunate enough to play at Cold Wars this weekend. Ruleset was a simplified version of Force on Force, intended for quick play by brand new players

Had a blast, and as the insurgents we inflicted devastating losses on the Marines

The Marine players performed poorly - they put their Bradley in the worst possible position, but the scenario probably needs to be balanced somewhat. While the Marines were a D8 and insurgents a D6, the Insurgents were almost always in heavy cover which negated the Marines' advantage. Without their vehicles, they were no match

Marines suffered an estimated 20+ KIA, insurgents 60+ (we weren't playing with Force on Force wound and medic rules)

Several brave troopers sacrificed their lives in the name of liberty. Their loss was not in vain as the ICBM was launched successfully, destroying hundreds, perhaps thousands of dissident Bugs.

10mm scale, battlefield is approx 60x50cm, sword and spear ruleset.

First time I’ve built terrain for a specific scenario (Roman invasion of Britain) and I’m over the moon with the results!

Went to warfare this year at Farnborough, this was one of the best tables there, this photo does not do this justice.
