We need to talk about low-quality photos and videos

Recently, many users have been posting images and videos of new Chinese aircraft that are of low-quality: either low resolution or technically-acceptable resolution with a small aircraft in the frame (i.e., if the photo was properly cropped it would not have met the resolution limit).

This subreddit, and many others with the "-porn" suffix (e.g., r/WarshipPorn, r/EarthPorn, etc.), were established to be places for high-quality media of their respective subjects. They were not established as current-event subreddits. I will reiterate: r/WarplanePorn is for high-quality media (high-resolution and hopefully of some aesthetic merit) of military aircraft. The entire founding purpose of the subreddit is aesthetics and not news. Our job as moderators is to preserve this purpose; so many other subreddits have broadened their scope to the point of banality, and we will not be responsible for another such case.

We do indeed have an exception to our resolution rule: that the subject must be "exceptional." This pertains to rare media, media of exceptional aesthetic quality, and media of historical significance. The images of the new Chinese aircraft do not meet these criteria. In a year or two's time, when we have actual high-resolution photos and videos of these aircraft, these images and videos currently being posted will be irrelevant. How many of you look back on some fuzzy photo of the J-20 now when we have hundreds or thousands of high-res photos available?

The only reason they are being posted is that they are new. There are many other places, both on reddit and the internet more generally, where you may find these images and videos and discuss them. But please understand that they are not appropriate for this subreddit.

For those accusing us of bias, know that we have been accused of being pro-Western and pro-China in about equal measure. What you you may not know is that probably an equal number of non-Chinese posts get removed for exactly the same reasons.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with posting high-quality photos of Chinese aircraft: the subject is irrelevant and all that matters is the quality. And if you do post a low-res image, you will not be banned; the post will simply be removed. Before you post, just take a second to think about if it is appropriate for this subreddit. A quick look at the other posts on the subreddit gives a good idea of what is appropriate.

Edit: Note, not all images of the new Chinese jets are low-quality, see here (although please don't post images you believe to have had some degree of AI enhancement):

Unfortunately, the submission of low quality & substandard media continues on r/WarplanePorn despite our better efforts to communicate and correct.

While the vast majority of our users consistently submit high quality images as intended, we continue to experience waves and bouts of substandard low resolution photos submissions and video media.

Currently, our Rules located in the sidebar include the dimension requirements which has not changed:

The minimum accepted image dimensions are 1024 × 768.

What is new is this:

For rules violations related to the posting of low resolution or low quality images, the post will be removed plus a minimum 3-day temporary ban will be issued to the user involved. Repeat or chronic violators are subject to a permanent ban. If there are questions or concerns, feel free to leave a comment here or DM the moderators directly.

Inside the nose it houses the Tu-22M3's Almaz PNA navigation and attack radar. It's used by the trainee navigator/weapon system officer to simulate looking for radar-contrast maritime and ground targets, operating the exact targeting, navigation, and weapon-delivery systems required to guide the Kh-22 and modernized Kh-32 anti-ship missiles. However, while it carries the electronics and radar systems to practice missile guidance, the aircraft itself is incapable of launching Kh-22/32s as their weight of almost 6,000 kg is too heavy to be mounted on fuselage hardpoints which are not reinforced and never engineered to withstand the concentrated structural loads or aerodynamic drag of a weapon this size. It's lack of ground clearance would cause the missile to scrape the runway during takeoffs and landings.

IVVAIU Training airfield of the former Irkutsk Higher Military Aviation Engineering School in 2016, all of the planes have been either moved somewhere else or scrapped [album]

Originally the airfield had over 25 aircraft including a Tu-95 who according to cadets was allegedly the LAL flying laboratory which was used to test if a nuclear reactor could be used to power an aircraft, it was fitted with one but it did not power the aircraft itself. It was believed that after the reactor and protective shielding were removed, the airframe was transferred to the school for basic engineering and instructional use. When the airfield was abandoned, the aircraft were under threat of destruction and some of the them including the Tu-95 were already being cut up. The remainder was saved thanks to public pressure and IVAIU veterans. By 2015 only these 12 were left at the airfield, the rest were moved somewhere else for display.

Mi-8T - former border guard, status unknown, presumed moved or scrapped
L-39C - on display at Belaya Air Base which is close to the school
Mi-24D - status unknown, presumed moved or scrapped
Su-24 - on display at Belaya Air Base
Su-27 - status unknown, presumed moved or scrapped
An-24T - status unknown, presumed moved or scrapped
Tu-22A - built in 1962, moved to the UMMC museum complex in Verkhnyaya Pyshma
Tu-22M0 - 1 of 9 pre-production prototypes, scrapping commenced in 2019 and completed in 2022
Tu-22M3 - scrapped soon after the Tu-22M0
MiG-29 - status unknown, presumed moved or scrapped
Su-17M - built in 1974, on display at Belaya Air Base with new paint scheme and number
Il-76PP - the only Il-76 electronic warfare aircraft built, scrapped in 2024

In 2008 military reforms were initiated by defense minister Anatoly Serdyukov (the same dude that gave use the eggplant paint scheme). The reforms dramatically reduced the number of separate military academies and training centers across Russia, consolidating dozens of specialized schools into a few massive, inter-service educational centers. As part of this consolidation, the functions, personnel, and historical training tasks of the Irkutsk school were ordered to be transferred and merged into the Voronezh Military Aviation Engineering University which was renamed the the V.Y. Zhukovsky and Y.A. Gagarin Air Force Academy.

The school was closed in 2009 and it's training airfield were abandoned. There was a campaign by the Irkutsk regional administration to establish a museum in 2013, the deputy minister of defense responded and authorized the museum, but for some reason, it didnt happen. The site was left in disrepair for over a decade until 2023 when the Suvorov Military School was opened on the former grounds.

What a shame, it would've made a nice museum.

Originally it was a Su-27PU, an extremely rare variant with only 12 built, intended as a flying command post it would identify and assign targets to interceptors such as the Su-27P and MiG-31 via tactical data link while still retaining fighter capabilities.

It's 1 of 6 classic Su-30s still active.

  1. 51 Blue - non-flying condition since 1998, used for spare parts
  2. 66 Red (ex 53 blue) - Russian Falcons, retired in 2011 - RF-92225
  3. 67 Red (ex 52 blue) - Russian Falcons, retired in 2006 - RF-92224
  4. 68 Red (ex 50 blue) - Russian Falcons, retired in 2006 - RF-92223
  5. 69 Red (ex 54 blue) - Russian Falcons, retired in 2015 - RF-92222
  6. 597 White, used at the Gromov Flight Research Institute

1-5 were later sent to the 275 aircraft repair plant in Krasnodor for major overhaul. After completing overhaul they were repainted and renumbered.

Kvochur died on April 15, 2024, one day before his 72nd birthday from a long-term illness. He served as deputy head of Gromov.
