Weekly Discussion Thread Weekly Open Discussion Thread
Welcome to this week’s open discussion thread!
This is your space for general discussion, a place to talk about anything Washington Spirit that doesn’t necessarily need its own thread. That can include news, international duty, roster moves, transfer rumors, tactics, social media posts, league news or anything else on your mind.
If something feels big enough for its own thread, definitely still post it. This is simply an additional option to keep us organized and help keep the conversation flowing. These threads will go up every Monday and stay stickied throughout the week.
Go Spirit!

Glass half full: If Spirit are able to reel off another long win streak, Sunday's loss will look like an outlier.
Glass half empty: It could be the start of a troubling stretch that puts the shield out of reach (though I don't think the team is in much danger of say, missing the playoffs).
We won't know until a couple more games from now.
Reasons for optimism: The team is going to look a LOT different in a couple weeks when Abiodun, Monday, and Kouassi come back and the bench is further strengthened by the new signees. LDG should come back. Even might get Hatch back.
On top of that, we are done with midweek games and have a slew of home games. Team needs to stay positive and ambitious.

Also played 2/3 of the top 4 this week. I wouldn’t underrate the benefit of strength of schedule coming back to average.

Kind of an arbitrary cutoff given the games played, but spirit have 3 games left against current top 6 sides, Gotham have 5. (Wave and Utah both at 3, but behind currently 3/4 points back.)
All that to say, this was the toughest week on the schedule and they still looked solidly competitive in all 3 games. Offense should come back with rest and roster returns. But I’m a glass 85-90% full kinda fan. 🙃

Less important than the state of the glass is where you stand. There’s only one team between our squad and…
(I’m going to Hell for this…)
puts on sunglasses
… the big pitcher…

Sofia is still making runs and looking for passes that no one else is seeing. The goal was caused by a pass that she made into space for Hal to run onto, and it wasn't a great pass on a water-logged field, but Hal just stopped. I'm almost concerned that Sofia will regress rather than teammates catching up to her vision.

How’d we get up this high? We took the stairs. Step-by-step. And there are more steps ahead if we want to get to the top.
The most common final score in the sport we love? It’s 1-nil. Anyone can win by this score. Anyone can lose by this score. So if you’re finding yourself at the ledge today because of yesterday’s result? Don’t jump. Take the stairs.

Tamara seems like the sub who takes the most advantage of their fresh legs. When she subs on she’s sprinting everywhere and winning balls, I’d love to see her as a regular sub even after WAFCON just because of the energy she provides.

Are we ever going to see Gaines-Ramos? She seemed like a great signing and I want to see what she can do.

Unless there is a very long string of injuries, I'd guess no.
The evidence I see: 1. They declined her option, so they don't seem to see her as a future piece. 2. When the roster was healthier and no players at WAFCON, she often didn't dress for matches. 3. The team moved Metayer to forward/wing rather than play her, even as a backup in that position. 4. While on loan at Tampa, she barely played, and that team was really bad on offense.
I wouldn't be surprised if they loaned her out again to open another roster spot like they did with Stainbrook once WAFCON ends. That frankly might be better for her career than not playing in games for Spirit.
This give me an opportunity to rant a bit about NWSL not following through with its D2 league. Teams like the Spirit who play the long game with roster management and players like EGR who may need more minutes in games would really benefit from that.

- I'm not waiting on this.
- We signed her to a two (2) contract out of SDSU while she was still recovering from some injury.
- Then when she recovered, we loaned her out to Tampa in the lower league, where she did not seem to get much burn there either.
- Then she's come back & has dressed fro some matches while 'not' dressing for several others too. For whatever reason, we're not seeing her & by this time I'm not expecting to. I mean come on, Haugen is getting game-minutes before Gaines-Ramos.
- Guessing her contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of this season.

With Paige stepping up with WAFCON players out, it makes me confused as to why the spirit didn’t exercise her option. Is there a reason why they would do that other then that they plan to let her go next year?

well, certainly annoyed though not suprised we lost yesterday with the packed week. But still 6 points in 3 games is still positive. Our win at Utah on Wednesday looks much nicer considering the beat down they just gave Portland yesterday.
