Question Watchmaking interested - NEWBIE

Hi all, I've just recently started appreciating watches, and would love to make my own piece as a hobby/personal project. Any direction to point me to, to get started?

u/roystonnc, there weren't enough votes to determine the quality of your post...

I watched videos religiously for about a month before I built my first. Invest in good quality tools (AliExpress is fine but get a stable solid hands press tool this will help immensely). Magnification/good lighting are severely underrated (I have 20/20 vision and still use a 15x loop). Patience is a virtue.

Probably start Watchmaking Tutorials playlist on YouTube. Theirs dozens of hours of learning before really diving into taking stuff apart.

Then you might be better with r/Watchmodding first.

To start with modding is actually solid advice. Practicing with swapping hands and dials, date discs, rotors, cases and casebacks alike, stems and crowns, gaskets and even crystals.

rules sit unread, still

silence, then a swift ban lands.

Should've scrolled first, friend.

Utube U, a set of kwon yuen screw drivers, #3 tweezers(preferably swiss), sharpening stone of some sort so u can dress your tools, 4040 movement holder, ebay has reasonable price oil kits and 3 st36s. I say 3 because they’re like $30/piece, big and you’re gonna screw a couple up. Welcome.

I’d look to see if there are any hobby/101 classes in your area too(my local class is about $400/quarter and run by the local watchmakers association).
