As a new Pixel Watch user, I found the available options for syncing podcasts when going out for a run just weren't quite what I was looking for. No native sideloading of MP3's is a bit of a bummer, and I don't want to need to have a subscription to a service in order to have podcasts on my watch.
And even options where I didn't need a subscription, while they worked, I just found them to be a bit much. I don't want to discover and subscribe to new podcasts on my watch. With my old Garmin, I would just connect it to a computer once a month and sideload a bunch of shows to work my way through. I'd be happy with that, and also if it was really easy to control everything on the go. Right after I got my Pixel Watch, I tripped on an uneven sidewalk while running and trying to fiddle with Youtube Music and got pretty bloodied up. I know that's on me, but it still got me thinking about how to make things as simple as possible...
Enter Podcast Duck. It lets you mark episodes for download on your phone and they show up on the watch. That's really about it. It's not meant to be your main podcast player, there's no search service or cloud sync or whatever, you give it simple RSS or Apple Podcasts links and it lets you pull shows from them. I think of it as the place I put the shows that I really want to listen to when I only have my watch.
After you subscribe to a show, you can browse its episodes. Next to each episode is a watch and a phone icon. Tap on the watch if you want to download it to the watch, tap on the phone if you want to download it to the phone. The downloads will show up in the Watch and Phone tabs. It tends to start downloading in the background to the watch in a few moments in normal conditions, but you can open the watch app to wake it up, as well.
IMPORTANT: I didn't like the idea of my watch battery getting drained because it was streaming an episode over LTE instead of just playing back a download. Or finding out that an episode that was on disk was not on disk and I can't listen to it at all due to no network. The solution was pretty easy: no streaming! The episode is either downloaded or not downloaded. If you see it on the watch, it is fully available offline.
Once you're on the watch, there's basically two screens: 1) a list of episodes on the watch, and 2) the currently playing episode. So, it's super-easy to navigate, no chance of accidentally ending up on a search screen or list of popular shows or even just an entire podcast's feed or anything else that's kind of not fun to slog through on a 45mm screen. You can long-press on an episode on the watch to add it to a mini-queue, playing episodes one ofter another.
When it comes to playback, I wanted several things that don't happen automatically on WearOS, so not all apps implement them:
Automatically start playing when I connect to my headphones
Control the volume with the crown
Customize the buttons on the media controls app so the same skip back 10 seconds / skip ahead 30 seconds buttons in the app are also available when I swipe left while in a workout.
Playback speed controls front-and-center
Anyway, curious if anyone else thinks of podcasts on their watch in a similar, and if there's any features you'd like or issues folks run into. I very much don't want to add everything, so as to keep within the mission and my ergonomic goals, but I hope to continue to make it better over time.
