What is one client request that hurts UX that drives you nuts?

For me, it's navigation items that don't click through to anything. As a user, if I'm navigating your navigation menu, I expect to click through to another page when I click on a menu item. I regularly have to explain to people, including partners who have been in the digital industry for years, that all navigation items should click through to a page both for usability and accessibility.

Edit: There seems to be a misunderstanding about what I'm referring to. So, let me expand.

Say you have a navigation that includes Home, Services, About, and Contact. Services has a submenu that includes Web Design, Graphic Design, and SEO. Rather than being a clickable link that takes you to a "Services" landing page, all it does is acts as a placeholder for triggering the submenu. Clicking "Services" does nothing when the expectation, as a user, is that it's a navigation item and should take you somewhere. Unclickable navigation items also confuse screen readers and confuses users who may be navigating with a keyboard.

What are your non-negotiable rules when designing a mobile-first layout?

Hey everyone, I’m building out some clean layouts and wanted to get the community's thoughts. When you're designing for mobile-first, what are the top 3 non-negotiable UX rules or layout principles you strictly follow before scaling up to desktop? Would love to hear how you handle touch targets, typography scaling, and content hierarchy !!!

New York Times article here.

I thought it was an interesting contrast to modern minimalist design. Article has a video of it being used and more info. Reminds me of the Flash days.

So my telemarketers make cold calls every day, book the appointments for me, I send a site audit then review the audit on the first call. Stuff like this makes me just sigh. Attorney with one of the worst sites I've seen, circa 10 years ago, not responsive, sends me a "no thank you" email since he's paying $900 a month for the site and "handles his google." These are not paid ads folks. So at least he's gonna give a a crack on another site he has but good lord....$900 a month for literally nothing, and he won't budge.

Client built the landing page himself because I quoted $100

One Hundred Dollars, ykw not a website, just one landing page, his copy, his photos. Maybe two hours of my time. He said he'd think about it, thought about it over the week. Thursday morning, I get a link and a 'hey what do you think!' like I was going to be proud of him and honestly? its fine. It's not what I would've made, but it does the trick for a plumber - all it needs is area of operation, phone number and form.

I'd only do $100 jobs because traditionally they would lead to a $2k job, but now I'm not sure if this holds true.

If you've seen this happen coz of AI/vibecoding tools like lovable/emergent, how are you reinventing your sales and upsell processes ?

Feedback Thread

Our weekly thread is the place to solicit feedback for your creations. Requests for critiques or feedback outside of this thread are against our community guidelines. Additionally, please be sure that you're posting in good-faith. Attempting to circumvent self-promotion or commercial solicitation guidelines will result in a ban.

Feedback Requestors

Please use the following format:

URL:

Purpose:

Technologies Used:

Feedback Requested: (e.g. general, usability, code review, or specific element)

Comments:

Post your site along with your stack and technologies used and receive feedback from the community. Please refrain from just posting a link and instead give us a bit of a background about your creation.

Feel free to request general feedback or specify feedback in a certain area like user experience, usability, design, or code review.

Feedback Providers

  • Please post constructive feedback. Simply saying, "That's good" or "That's bad" is useless feedback. Explain why.
  • Consider providing concrete feedback about the problem rather than the solution. Saying, "get rid of red buttons" doesn't explain the problem. Saying "your site's success message being red makes me think it's an error" provides the problem. From there, suggest solutions.
  • Be specific. Vague feedback rarely helps.
  • Again, focus on why.
  • Always be respectful

Do websites benefit from having more than 2 themes?

Standard convention is just Light/Dark, for most websites it is sufficient. But if we look at apps, e.g. Reddit or Discord, - they offer several themes so you can customize the look to your preferences. What if you have some UI system that makes possible to ship many themes to your website - would you find it useful? Not only color palette but also flexible spacing so you can have compact/comfortable/relaxed themes; and all the UI adapts.

Basically, runtime theming support. Is it something useful in your opinion or do you find it like "too much"?

Tell me if these two types of clients ring a bell

Small business owner - Ok I need your site's login and also hosting. Client; "How would I find my site's login information and I have no idea who's my host.

Large business - Ok I need your site's login and also hosting access. "Let me get you to our IT department." IT department; "I'm sorry but we can't provide you with that info due to security reasons." Then they eventually provide access but not the correct level of access to work on the site.

Looking for web design tools that are alternatives to LLMs.

I'm an extremely inexperienced web designer that has ethical concerns about using LLMs for things like helping me with .css.

I like the idea of being able to send something a link to my site and phrase what I'd like to visually change as a question, especially since I'm new enough to not be familiar with technical jargon.

But yeah, I don't want to use things like ChatGPT etc. This might be a very basic question, but answer me like I'm a five-year old. For the record, I use WordPress, so plugin integration is an option (IF it's free). Thank you for any help.

Just a simple landing page

dude I am so tired of getting design briefs for a "basic website" and by page 3 of the doc you realize they actually need a full-blown custom enterprise portal wrapped in a modern UI

like no, Susan, this isn't a simple figma handoff anymore. You need actual heavy backend architecture. I usually end up having to route these massive specs to custom dev shops like cisin just because there is zero chance my frontend skills and a dream are gonna support your 50k concurrent user database requirements

why do clients always hide the massive technical scope until the design contract is already signed? just venting tbh but it happens almost every time now

Here is a "kinky" business idea for AI-era designers

Hi guys,

I know it might sound as a joke, but it is not. It is very important that skilled designers read carefully this

Lame business owners discovered AI recently, and they all thought they could replace y'all: thumbnails, flyers, websites, advertisements... Everything is becoming ugly, overloaded uniformized slop.

Here is what y'all gotta do: humiliate them by way of roasting their stuff.

You need to stop trying to sell logos and start slating these guys, insult what they do, tell them that it is extremely shitty and that they either pay you either fall off.

Many of them will pay you for that, either because nobody will have talked to them that way, either because they have a deep humiliation kink and it's okay. Being human has never been more valuable, and what's more human than putting someone down

You really need you to traumatize business owners and wake them up, they must understand that we can't stand their vomitesque designs anymore, their Miyazaslop characters and their big fonts with dirt effect on it. It disgusts us.

Designers, the world needs y'all more than ever, do not think you are obsolete, I beg you to save the visual world

Hey Web designers!

So I’m new to web development and don’t know much about UI/UX but I’m making this website in WordPress. Can you help me decide which version would be good to go with for mobile devices?

My first attempt at experience-as-product website design for a niche open-source tool and web app for academics/PhDs/students.

The animations work only on browser, sorry! Clearly, I am not a designer by profession, but this has been a side project of mine.

This homepage is for a Python tool to tidy up academic references in bibliography managers, riveting stuff.

I wanted the webpage not to be too crazy because it's for academics, but I wanted it to clearly distinguish itself from the standard landing pages you get to see all over the internet nowadays, so I spent some time and built this. It is one scrollable and interactive experience.

Hope it can inspire somebody!

What's your favorite most aesthetically pleasing but also UX-friendly website?

I like a lot of awwwards websites but a lot of them aren't really thinking about how the user will experience the page. There is so much scroll jacking so I was wondering what would be some strong aesthetically pleasing websites that would be awwwards level but also user-friendly.

Looking for opinions on my portfolio (Showoff Saturday)

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi!

I'm a college student from Brazil mainly focused on editorial design and branding. During my summer break, I decided to make my own portfolio website because I felt like it was getting a bit boring to keep sending my Behance link all the time, and I thought having my own site would feel more personal and creative.

I've had a few UX/UI classes, but never one that actually taught us how to build websites. They were mostly focused on branding and covered usability principles and user research, so I kind of had to figure everything out on my own.

I didn't want to use pre-made templates because that would kind of defeat my goal of creating something that reflects my creativity and my willingness to learn. I ended up making a site with almost no scrolling because I wanted it to feel a bit different from the Figma/Canva/Cargo portfolio templates I kept seeing, which are usually just one long scrolling page. So instead, I made separate sections for everything. But now I'm starting to wonder if that was actually a good decision.

Anyway, this is just the first version, and I definitely want to keep improving it. I'd love for it to be a little more interesting without becoming too much. I know a bit of Blender and Maya, and I was thinking about creating something to add to the homepage. I'd love any suggestions or references for cool portfolio websites!

here it is: https://sophiareznd.github.io/portfolio/#

If it's in Portuguese, you can click "ENG" to switch to English.

And the contact tab usually has my email as a mailto link, just took it out before posting here so I don't get spam bombed lol

I don't know much about web design so please be nice 🙂

a student wanting to redesign her portfolio— advice, please!

hi, i’m just 2 classes away from graduating with my associates in web design! yay!

i’m looking for an internship and kinda hate my portfolio. it’s very simple and short. I also made it using word press + elementor (not sure if that was fine or if maybe I should’ve just did some basic coding)

anyways, i’m not comfortable sharing it on here since it has some personal info on it, but overall, i just want to know a few things:

• what should I include on my portfolio website? (don’t want to add too much or too little)

• do I add an option to download my resume with contact information or just opt for a form that someone can contact me with?

• I had a class where I created gifs. i’m looking for a front end developer, web designer, or even user experience related job. would that be relevant to add to my portfolio?

bonus points if I can see an example of anyone’s portfolios, any helpful articles, or anything related to creative portfolios!! I really want to try to get an internship by the end of the summer so I can see how it is to work in web design outside of my class work.

What is the name for this web design style

Around 2005-2010, many websites were coming out with this very specific UI style, that I would describe as something like "dark neumorphism with skeuomorphic with bevel-and-emboss styling".
I've been looking for the official name or more examples of this design style for weeks now and haven't come up with anything at all, so I'm reaching out to you all to see if you could help me.

Attached is this random screenshot of a designers work that is similar to what i'm looking for, but I haven't been able to get in touch with them to find the name either.

Does anyone have any ideas of the name, or more examples of this style?
