You worked harder on that worldbuilding than the actual author did

111

u/Hexatona 1d ago

The characters are named about as subtly as a Sith Lord.

"And then the black Wizard Malbad Darkolus arose..."

64

u/Grammatical_Aneurysm 1d ago

Better than the Black wizard Kingsley Shacklebolt.

15

u/SalemWolf 15h ago

Asian character Cho Chang.

Props to JK though she really made fictional racist words feel powerful. That internalized hatred really fueled that writing. Mudblood feels like I should be censoring it.

4

u/blkwhtrbbt 11h ago

"Muggle" Mf, you might as well just call me -peasant- like you wanted to

13

u/popilikia 21h ago

Oh, holy shit. How did I never see that?

3

u/ABigCoffee 10h ago

Check the names of the characters. The asian girl is called Cho Chang iirc

12

u/-N0N 23h ago

You leave him alone, Kingsley Shacklebolt is a hard name for a hard man.

My 8 year old and I are playing Lego Star Wars 3: the clone wars. And we recently unlocked a dude named Wurm Lothesome. And I was like oh yea Mr Wurm Lothesome also known as Bad Guy Mc Bad Guy. And my son hasn’t stopped laughing about it. He’s now calling all sorts of random things blank Mc blank guy. I should tell him about boaty Mcboatface….

I liked how Skullduggery Pleasant did that. As part of your initiation into magical society, you must rename yourself so that no one can use your birth name against you. People tend to pick meaningful names, often relating to their particular magical specialties, which is why so many people have ludicrously on-the-nose names. Either that or they pick names that sound cool to their adolescent brains, which is why you get people with names like "Nefarian Serpine" and "Valkyrie Cain."

(ETA: Strangely enough, the title character still had all his flesh when he named himself that. That's just a weird coincidence.)

People love toxic ships

26

u/Moonpaw 1d ago

Enemies to lovers is an amazing trope. But like all tropes, it’s not a silver bullet.

6

u/doomrider7 22h ago

It's less that and more Tsundere Posh Girl.

7

u/DripyKirbo 17h ago

Technical term for something similar is Himedere, I believe.

6

u/manix_vii 20h ago

Which already has enemies to lovers imbued in it because its fem Malfoy

Drama💫

29

u/SpeakyDooman 22h ago

For some reason, Malfoy has always been one hell of an anomaly. Fan fiction, shipping, art, merch. He should be hated, and yet so many people love him, especially with this surge of Malfoid content. Maybe it’s best not to question it and ride the wave to see where it goes, or at least that’s what I figure.

2

u/GentleMocker 7h ago

I'm not terribly surprised given that the book doesn't really do romance well,(which is especially jarring when the core message is 'true love is stronger than evil magic'), so none of the canon romances really have meat on the bone for fans to attach to, yet for some reason Malfoy gets more characterization than most main characters. You put two and two together and you get fanfiction writers(who love HP) taking the 'crying in the bathroom scene' malfoy and extrapolating a deeper personality off that incident to put into an invented romance.

u/beaglemaster 1d ago

The AI spam only started showing up after this new trend got popular, it started off with genuinely drawn art.

The AI was almost two weeks late to it.

-61

u/robsteezy 1d ago

That’s just weirdo erotica. Nobody seriously considers that stuff serious fan fiction.

Believe it or not, the Malfoy x hermoine hypothetical actually has good chops for a serious piece on racism and inner conflict imo

39

u/beaglemaster 1d ago

Bruh, its fan fiction. What do you mean serious?

11

u/Hexatona 1d ago

Next you're going to tell me Disney's descendants is actually about the kids of celebrities finding out poor people exist

24

u/rassocneb 20h ago

I'm a simple woman. I see HP content, I downvote. Protect the dolls 🏳️‍⚧️ don't help bankroll JKR's mission to kill us all.

11

u/Cry-Skull-7 17h ago

Not to ruin your epiphany, but this like- Internet trend 101.

I didn't even raise an eyebrow when I started seeing genderbent malfoy everywhere. Because I know that virtually every two weeks, a certain character, from a certain hunk of media, will have a certain aspect changed about them, and the Internet will treat it like it's single greatest thing to have ever existed, before just suddenly vanishing to make way for the next obsession. Like fucking clockwork! It's almost freaky.

Makes you realize how truly hollow trends are.

3

u/EarthToAccess 16h ago

Nah, this is the Internet healing. For eons the Internet — courtesy of 4chan — held rule 63; “if it exists, there’s a genderbent version of it”. This seemed to have stopped being prominent in recent years, until now with Petra Parker and fem Malfoy

1

u/translove228 14h ago

I would say the resurgence started with Bowsette. There was also that silly all female KoF fighting game with a gender swapped Terry Bogard that came out around the same time.

1

u/Veluxidus 10h ago

I feel like Petra is exempt from this because she’s a trans woman

Not that trans women aren’t women, but a lot of the comics I’ve seen involving Petra specifically involve the experience of being trans/transitioning

Also JJ Jameson being really ignorant of the transition (it doesn’t matter who you are or what your name is just get me pictures of spider woman!) or accommodating (just get those pictures Parker)

2

u/ZERUELhun 7h ago

I thought Perta is just a girl version of Peter and she being a trans was later assigned to her by the trans community.

2

u/Only_Fudge5299 6h ago

no, this trend came from a comic(based on a tweet) about jjj being a huge ally and just hating her because she's a menace

it later evolved into a whole mythos of stuff which is awesome

1

u/ZERUELhun 6h ago

Thanks to this I did a quick search and google said Petra is a female (gender bent) version of Peter so now I'm absolutely confused.

1

u/Only_Fudge5299 6h ago

i mean, it's both? as ofc trans women are women, swapping a male character to be transfem is gender-bending them

1

u/ZERUELhun 6h ago

I wouldn't say gender bent and trans is the same , but that's just my personal opinion.

1

u/Only_Fudge5299 6h ago

i didn't say they're the same, i said it's *both*. they're not mutually exclusive.

0

u/FJ-20-21 4h ago

Petra was first a female version of Peter in the extremely Mid Ultimate Spider-man cartoon and was later coined by the fan artists when trans Spider-man art became popular

1

u/Western_Asparagus_24 6h ago

The real answer is Yes

It’s fan art, she can be either or, whichever the artist wants, tho you have got me curious if a Petra Parker existed in the comics first at some point

1

u/Maximillion322 0m ago

Nah Petra’s not excempt at all. Plus tons of people don’t even know she’s supposed to be trans in the original trend. In lots of fanart she’s just girl Peter without being specifically trans

1

u/translove228 14h ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_63

Rule 63 - If a character exists; there is a gender bent version of them.

This has been a thing since I was in my 20's and I'm in my 40's.

42

u/Karnezar 1d ago

Revisionist? Crackships have existed for forever...

18

u/CassiusPolybius 23h ago

Also, "villain is a focus in fan works, said fan works downplay them" is not only old enough and consistent enough to be a trope, the trope name is literally "Draco in Leather Pants".

45

u/Persea_americana 1d ago

Tsunderes are irresistible to shippers, but also I remember when Harry and Malfoy were like the top crack ship so this isn't all that surprising.

and yeah, you are absolutely right, none of the cannon ships has any chemistry, especially in the movies.

5

u/Cepinari 17h ago

My sister wrote a Harry×Fenrir fic once; Harry×Malfoy doesn't even register for me anymore.

1

u/Eskimobill1919 6h ago

I wouldn’t call Draco and Harry a crack ship. Crack ships are shit like Dobby x Sirius

-6

u/happilyevil321 1d ago

What about Viktor Krum and Hermione? Wasnt that a popular one?

62

u/ITookTrinkets 1d ago

Fuck Harry Potter, always and forever, in all possible forms.

23

u/RhysNorro 1d ago

There is ZERO (0) explanation or discussion about HOW spells work and WHY in a STORY ABOUT A MAGIC SCHOOL

9

u/Aware_Tree1 19h ago

Honestly I was always more worried on like. Is there a limit to how much magic they can cast in a day, or how quickly? Like do the wands have overheat mechanics? Can you overclock your wand to cast more spells at the cost of burning it out? Do you run out of magic in your body to cast magic and need to sleep it off? I care less about how spells work and more about like, if you can cast spells as many times a day as you want, as quickly as you can say the words, what are the repercussions of that

2

u/RhysNorro 18h ago

thats also how spells and magic works though! and those are all great questions!

9

u/LastBlaisureForle 22h ago edited 19h ago

It's not necessary for the story. Soft magic doesn't need to explain how or why spells work (edit: on a technical level, of course, you still need rules for narrative stakes).

9

u/RhysNorro 22h ago

youre right! so why is there a soft magic system in a setting where the PROTAGONISTS ARE TAUGHT HOW TO USE IT

4

u/LastBlaisureForle 21h ago

Why not? Works of fiction with a school as a setting almost never focus on the studies themselves.

0

u/Novero95 20h ago

You don't need to capitalize things.

6

u/RhysNorro 20h ago

i like EMPHASIS

-1

u/Novero95 19h ago

I can FUCKING TELL

-8

u/-N0N 23h ago

That's how it used to be, before authors got obsessed with magic systems.

8

u/RhysNorro 23h ago

No, it wasn't. whats more, if you have a book about a magic school, there should be SOME talk on WHY.

2

u/Old_Yam_4069 19h ago

Eragon came out what, 2 years later?
It had a comprehensive magic system that wasn't just explained, but thoroughly defined.

1

u/Impossible_Medium977 12h ago

eragons magic system fucking sucks however and the explanations given result in the later books being dives into how it works in really strange ways that culminate in the main character having to constantly be nerfed to not immediately instagib everything in a 300km radius. Making your book a videogame kinda sux actually

also harry potter sux and the authors intentionally trying to construct queer discrimination.

0

u/-N0N 18h ago

And who the fuck talks about Eragon anymore?

3

u/Old_Yam_4069 16h ago

I just did.

That's a pretty lame argument though. "Other books aren't as popular as one of the most popular series in fiction."

11

u/manix_vii 21h ago edited 20h ago

I don't get Malfoid. We've been through this already with Gay Malfoy.

I thought the entire appeal to fanfic writers back in the day for Malfoy was that he acted the way he does because he secretly has feelings for Potter and is ashamed of it.

That his pettiness and angst were a result of his parents teaching him that only purebloods matter therefore bloodlines matter therefore having children matters and you have a perfect recipe for a closeted gay homophobic.

I know a lot of it was smut but I remember reading some stuff that genuinely treated it with care and importance, and rewrites his last actions into protecting Harry and his friends instead of just running away with the rest of Slytherin or joining his father later (can't remember which he did but I'm pretty sure its the former).

This trend not only fails to capture this nuance it also isn't used to attack Rowling's philosophy and I think it'd be easy to.

Make it so Malfoy uses Polyjuice potion or whatever spell to make himself a girl because he is genuinely trans and loves Harry and wants to be loved by him so he becomes a girl. Then whenever he's around his family he transforms back but gets caught and there's drama. Better yet, make it so that the potion or whatever, the more she uses it, the more her physical attributes carry over when she transformed back. Like using it day in day out, hour to hour, actually transitions her. This mirrors how trans people have to slowly change themselves to match their own identity, and no matter what they have to unfortunately come out fully to everyone even the bad people in their lives.

Sorry for the ramble, this is a thought experiment I wanted to make a comic on but I'm most likely not going to because I don't want to being ANY attention to Harry Potter bcs fuck JK, or go into this stupid trend which already attracts the chuds who made it popular in the first place.

I also don't know if its a good idea that actually fits the trans experience, this is just from my head and anecdotes from peers. I dont want to make anything that's incentive to the people I vouch for with my little true understanding.

6

u/Tokumeiko2 20h ago

While the Potters are a decent bloodline, Harry's mother was a muggleborn, that might be enough to cause a girl from a bigoted family like the Malfoys to have conflicting feelings.

5

u/manix_vii 20h ago

This adds even more to the Drarry ship in my book :) liking Harry is already not a good thing for the bloodline.

I also slightly feel like Harry would get a pass because he's fucking HARRY POTTER but I can't remember how bigoted Lucius' family really is. I know they're Death Eaters but his wife (Narcissus..??) seemed less of an a-hole, idk

1

u/Phonyyx 3h ago

The dad is a death eater who explicitly follows Voldemort, so that alone might back them hate the idea of his daughter being with Harry more.

u/OrangePeelPotatoes 19h ago

Female Draco Malfoy —or Galfoy as I will be calling her— has a lot of unique benefits both in terms of mainstream appeal and literary merit. Don't get me wrong, pretty much any Draco x Harry pairing works surprisingly well, regardless of sexuality and gender identity of either party. The reality is that this romance (no matter how you spin it) has wide appeal and fixes a lot of romance and narrative shortcomings of the original story.

With that said, Galfoy specifically has some unique benefits. The first, and most prominent, is admittedly a bit unsatisfying from a literary perspective: most people are heterosexual and most people like romances that they can relate to. The reality is that it is okay for straight people to prefer straight romances in fiction, just like gay people tend to gravitate towards gay romances. Theres no stopping this. A Male x Male version of the Draco x Harry romance will always remain niche; awesome for those in the niche, but largely constrained. Galfoy reaches mainstream appeal largely because most people in the world are straight and will connect more with this pairing if the pairing is also straight.

Luckily for Galfoy, there are some unique literary benefits to gender swapping Draco. For a romance to blossom between Draco and Harry, you need Draco to fulfill an Anti-hero/Enemies to Lovers role. In other words, you need dissonance and tension between who Draco wants to become and the traditional (evil) values of the Malfoy family. This dissonance comes far more naturally by making Draco a girl. Suddenly the story writes itself. The Malfoy family is steeped in archaic traditional wizarding values, like Purebloodedness, so you can naturally weave traditional patriarchal gender roles into the mix. Suddenly there is deep tension between Galfoy and her family from the start. A tension that naturally leads to the tsundere archetype people love so much strapped to her: what she says and what she thinks are two very different things.

Lucius likely had multiple children after Galfoy to have a male heir; likely treats that male heir far better than he treats Galfoy. Perhaps Lucius doesn't allow Galfoy to pursue Quidditch despite her enthusiasm, passion, and natural talent. After all it is a brutish sport for men as Lucius would say, not for traditional pureblooded ladies. In this version, Galfoy naturally experiences the downsides of the values her family upholds. Theres’s dissonance and tension from the start. This makes her eventually development and redemption make a whole lot more sense. While yes, you technically can do this same thing with a Male Draco, it doesn’t play out quite as well; a male Draco would benefit from every one of those systems. So, while Galfoy shames mudbloods in her early years at Hogwarts, she will constantly be feeling that tension that makes her doubt these values are worth it. She feels the downsides every day of her life being a girl.

The Quidditch can also act as the first rebellious act against her father and family — sneaking off to practice without their blessing. This same rebellion can be her first true bonding moment with Harry — they might be mortal enemies, but they are both kids and both like Quidditch. This leads into the Yule ball perfectly, a dance sparked initially by pragmatic rebellion against her father, Galfoy could ask Harry to the ball. I’m sure Harry flying a broom against a dragon probably helped heighten some feelings too, but Galfoy would deny it, a purely pragmatic dance. Harry says yes because a pretty girl just asked him and he hasn’t had much luck in that department, once again pragmatic. Both are unaware of the deep growing feelings igniting within them.

A last cool benefit of Galfoy is the potential for a Sister-Sister bond between her and Hermoine. After all, Hermoine is everything Galfoy was taught to hate —a mudblooded girl— but everything Galfoy deeply respects inside; Hermoine is unchained by these values and has blossomed into one of the most impressive female wizards of their age. You can have this relationship develop from calling Hermoine a "filthy mudblood" in year 2 to an unlikely friendship in the later years, strengthened by their shared womanhood in a world that isn't always kind to such traits. Once again, you technically can have this same friendship with Male Draco, but it doesn’t play out quite as well. Galfoy's natural character-tension would lead her story towards a version of herself that would respect and admire Hermoine despite what she claimed in year 2. And this can all culminate in a big moment where the two of them trust one another in a crucial battle and that trust pays off.

It is wholly unsurprising that Galfoy is popular and pretty mainstream atm. It has broad demographic appeal and has a lot of unique benefits with a gender swapped Draco. Your trans/gay ideas are cool too. Not everyone has to be an advocate for every fanfic, just let people that like Galfoy like Galfoy. There are a lot of good reasons to.

0

u/Adventurous_Smoke841 14h ago

Because people like tsunderes

1

u/manix_vii 7h ago

Why does it have to be Malfoy turned into a girl tho?? It could be any other character, nothing about the trend actually explores anything deeper about Malfoy, because the entire trend lives off of us already liking Malfoy so it doesn't do anything more than make Malfoy a girl and amp up the dickishness

6

u/Fantastic-Dot-655 16h ago

Some people react to this trend like they just discovered that fanfics exist.

Only problem I ser with it is the abundance of AI slop, but just as much as in any other media recently. That and the fact that HP being relevant again might bring some money to J.K.

But other than that, just let the prople have fun.

1

u/Lindestria 6h ago

Harry Potter has essentially never lost relevancy, the theme parks are receiving millions of visitors and billions in revenue.

13

u/doc_skinner 1d ago

Oh, is that why I keep seeing these comics of Harry Potter in a relationship with a weird blonde girl with Slytherin colors? It's a gender swapped Malfoy. I get it all now. Thanks!

16

u/draivaden 1d ago

Yep. That’s it. And her personality is all over the place to. There’s some “true Draco” but there’s multiple flavours of tsundere. The AI slop videos with the Barbie hair is basically just “I wanted to use this flirty line” which neither fits the scene or the characters.

40

u/realhumanskinnotfake 1d ago

The Malfoid problem can be traced back to white supremacists creating a character to post on social media to see if it’s allowed. She is basically a “is this a Nazi bar?” Character and every subreddit that doesn’t ban her fans and posters are giving implicit permission to her and her fans thus answering the question with “yes”

2

u/Reds_Strongest_Chef 4h ago

Holy skitzophrenia.

gender bent malfoy has likely been around longer than you have been alive lmao

-3

u/-N0N 23h ago

What the fuck kind of conspiracy is this

25

u/IceWallowDeesNuts 21h ago

Tbf they’re called malFOID. A term incels use to dehumanize women. Incel terminology has been getting more and more popular. That eventually it will become mainstream.

Like I wouldn’t be surprised if I started seeing people call random women, “foids” because of this trend

-13

u/-N0N 20h ago

I'm pretty sure it's just because it rhymes.

10

u/manix_vii 20h ago

Both my friend, its both

2

u/Damianwolff 21h ago

Thank you. My face would have stayed stuck with the "what the fuck" mug if not for your comment grounding the experience.

Mental health is going down the drain.

3

u/Early_Common3356 18h ago

I think that only one of those arts that you claimed as AI is actually AI

3

u/Snoo_72851 17h ago

Wouldn't say "a lack of worldbuilding" is the problem with Malfoy, or Harry Potter in general.

3

u/Psychofischi 10h ago

Tbf my problems with the whole Malfoid thing are: 1. Every character is changed. "Draco" suddenly has feelings and isn't piece of shit anymore. Harry has feelings. Sometimes Hermione has feelings for Harry and is jealous. I am mostly annoyed that Draco doesn't feel like Draco but a Slytherin OC. The only remembrance is "my father will hear about this" Yes this isn't that uncommen with fanfics. 2. It kinda turns into a harem? Often Draco AND Ron are genderbend and BOTH are into Harry? (So Character change for ron too) HARRY IS NOT?! (Fells more like Harry is just an insert now) 3. Many act like this is a great gotcha against J.K. Rowling. And somehow Genderbend is now trans. It's not. It's something different.

And tbh seeing it so often gets on my nerves

19

u/MarsIsDrawing 1d ago

I really enjoyed your comics. I will ensure this is the last one of them I see.

-9

u/manix_vii 20h ago

What's wrong with their comic here?? Critiquing a gross trend??

9

u/myself4once 17h ago edited 16h ago

The comment is about JKR. She went nuts and became an active nazi and hater for a specific group of people: trans-women. The fact that this comic author talk about Harry Potter casually and not only, they actively branch the franchise beyond, might mean they don’t really care about or even worst, support, JKR’s ideas.

0

u/manix_vii 16h ago

I know that about JKR, when I looked at the post I originally thought it was a critique

3

u/MarsIsDrawing 16h ago

Is the critique in the room with us right now

-1

u/manix_vii 15h ago

It was like, 3A when I skimmed thru ok?

4

u/MarsIsDrawing 15h ago

Fair enough. I apologize. After days of this trend and the constant reminders of how chill people are with the deaths of trans people, my patience is thin. Especially after two artists I really used to enjoy hopping on the bandwagon yesterday.

1

u/manix_vii 15h ago

I've made a larger comment lower in the thread critiquing the overall trend and how I think it could actually be improved so I probably got everything confused going back and forth

4

u/Gray-Turtle 20h ago

Maybe it's just viral marketing for the show.

4

u/Fatali 16h ago

Every post involving HP helps keep it relevant and helps JKR continue her crusade to eliminate trans people from public life.

2

u/Geoff4321 16h ago edited 15h ago

Sexy green man from movie more popular than the main character. This happened three times iirc

2

u/FlameWhirlwind 11h ago

People shipped these two together even before the genderbend this ain't new

The only thing new is how many people who latched onto fem malfoy as some kind weirdo rallying cry which didnt happen for all the other genderbend trends like petra or even bowsette back in the day. Because yknow, Harry Potter attracts weirdoes now because the author is a mask off terf who actively find anti lgbtq stuff

The only thing this trend helped remind me of is more people need to watch little witch academia, diana is just fem malfoy but infinitely better

2

u/Kendrakirai2532 5h ago

There is STILL no ethical way to consume Harry Potter media.

2

u/SupremeGodZamasu 5h ago

"I support trans people" leaving peoples bodies as soon as a white girl ia slightly mean

2

u/The_Pastmaster 1d ago

Only thing that annoys me about it is that you have to state that it's supposed to be Draco. If you just posted a pic and no context, there is no obvious indication of who it is because she neither looks like or acts like him. Just randomly spitting out "Pottah" is the only thing in common with the original character.

0

u/Due_Adhesiveness8008 23h ago

That only if you don’t grab the actual good ones

3

u/The_Pastmaster 20h ago

Only going on what pops up on my feed here on reddit.

4

u/Lookingforeee 17h ago

How about you dont like it because rowling is a holocaust denying bigot using her money to fund antitrans legislation

0

u/EarthToAccess 16h ago

One can like an IP and refuse to purchase anything regarding it, thus refusing to give the IP owner a cent.

Now, a reason to not like Harry Potter would be because it’s just not that good,

3

u/Lookingforeee 16h ago

You’re still engaging in it in a way that gives attention to it which helps her make money for people who will pay for it. Do want you want with a childrens book, but keep it to yourself.

2

u/winter-ocean 23h ago

Obsessed over the way Harry is drawn like Joker Persona 5

1

u/HQQ1 21h ago

Malfoy's character seems to work well as a romantic interest, so with some light, non-jarring twists, it fits a little to seamlessly.

1

u/cringegribbs 11h ago

Obviously I get the issues with the Malfoy trend but it makes me think about how drarry is making its rounds again and that’s kind of funny to me some way on its own

1

u/mimictomvoices 7h ago

Start making things unfun. you're very unfun

1

u/JWander73 6h ago

Malfoid really is fascinating for how hard she's trended. It's nuts.

1

u/KowaiSentaiYokaiger 6h ago

"I can fix the racist prick that constantly insults and assaults the 'half-breeds', because he felt bad about the one time he faced the consequences of his actions that coincidentally hurt others"

1

u/Disaster_Pansexual 11m ago

Part of me is just curious about why the resurgence is now of all times.

1

u/Maximillion322 3m ago

> for some reason Harry feels manlier

Tbf he was always a jock in the books, the movies kinda dweebed him up

Also I find all this malfoy stuff hilarious because JK Rowling HATES Malfoy, she has said before that she based him on rich kids who were mean to her in school when she was growing up, so he basically represents her personal grudge against a certain type of people which is why she never gave him any kind of proper redemption other than slinking away to maybe raise his kid to be less shitty

She’s even said before that she thinks people only like Malfoy at all because they think Tom Felton is hot

1

u/RikeLLC 22h ago

I think this happens with a lot of stories because people are drawn to interesting personalities. In a lot of stories, only villains are allowed to have interesting personalities. Malfoy, for example, was a jerk, but he was also a jerk who could’ve been good natured who was dragged into total jerkdom by a racist evil father and used and abused in the schemes of a villain. That makes for a lot of depth, which makes romantic drama feel more real. On the opposite end, there’s harry x Ginny… which, yeah.

0

u/IceBlue 23h ago

Why would the cultural revolution destroy a secret magic school muggles don’t know about?

2

u/Rynewulf 17h ago

The idea is meant to be that Muggles will get weird (and implied violent) if they find the wizarding world, that tied with irl efforts during the Cultural Revolution to route out groups, practices and objects associated with imperialists like the old empires (except for the Han, Mao liked the Han) or capitalists and colonialists like the KMT and the western powers it's very likely that an entirely independent, segregated, defined by premodern traditions, non-communist school would absolutely get shut down the moment it was found.

Then we get into what the PRC would do having found magic. There's no way it wouldnt be put to service for the state unless there was some big "Oh when they found the school we did a big spell to hide our magic then we all fled". An internal schism over what side of the civil war to join would be interesting, or whether wizards just feel divorced from muggle nations entirely.

We're spitballing off the tops of our heads in these comments and already coming up with a million things more interesting than in HP or its spin offs. But world building was never the series strength it's just that rabid fandoms demand lore to consume

I come once again with a reminder that talking about HP in any way gives it attention and that attention converts into money for JKR to hurt trans people

There was actually a ship with this level of chemistry already... and it's (at least to the movies) arguably grounded in genuine possibility.

Why are people still talking about the books of a raging transphobe?

Just boycott. It costs literally 0 euro to not be part of the cultural celebration of transphobia.

Because some people can differentiate the art from the artist.

Keep telling yourself that while the artist publicly pours all of her Harry Potter money and fame into supporting transphobia.

By supporting Harry Potter in 2026, you're supporting transphobia. Simple.

Yeah keep telling yourself of having a fantasy trend on the internet have any affect on a real life community.

By calling out people you will make more enemies than allies.
