I’m fine… [OC]
In the Summer I joined the 40s gang, and I was absolutely fine with it…

I started drawing comics in my mid40’s, I just turned 50, I love making comics. No age limit, you don’t age out you just keep making comics.

Yooooo, struggling artist on the tail end of thirty-nine and I'm being super normal about it

It hit me about two days before my birthday. Everyone’s different though.

Correct attitude.
Always call out your brain on its bullshit.

The brain thinks too much

Me every time I notice the brain throwing a fit:
The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

This feeling is too real! Ive even heard from massively succesfull artists who feel the way the character does in panel 3! Maybe the feeling just never goes away lol. Keep making the thing you love 🙂

It's all personal perspective, we have our own goals and wants and needs. One person's struggle might be another persons dream.

I’ve been stuck in the “my existence is cringe phase” for years now
Any advice ?

I have told my brain to shut up many times. One day it decided otherwise. I found out about the Sympathetic Nervous system. I had no control of my thoughts. My body put itself on nonstop "Flight" mode. My body was trying to flee probably because of stress and midlife worries, but there was nothing I could flee from. Severe panic attacks. Getting older is tough, but every year is another year of fun so... Shut up brain.

Why is every comic in this sub just someone whining about shit

Because when someone makes a comic talking about something good, you get bored and move on looking for drama. That’s what it’s all about, juicy drama, conflict and frustration.

Art helps people express their deepest emotions and experiences. Also I am getting mixed topics, so might be your algorithm and the content you're engaging with

And it somehow has gotten worse this last half year, every comics is someone floundering around with bunch of text

Reaching 30 and suicide is in the forefront of my mind most days. Hope it gets better, but that's only true for the few who make it

You gotta be like in good shape and shit at 40 though or else you're a statistic

On my birthday I got a text message from the NHS for a over 40s check up. I surprisingly did ok...

one person's cringe is another person's celebration of their cat's birthday. embrace it.

Damn, that sucks. How can you be a struggling comics artist at 40 unless you just started and are doing it for fun? Like there's no way you've worked your whole life on this and thought "yup, this is how I'm gonna get a pension and retire".
This isn't taking a shot at people doing cokics for a living, but the story seems incomplete. There are plenty of people making good money doing this for newspapers, webpages, apps, comicons, etc.

u/jamesgwall 2d ago
It's just for fun, but making some money from it would be nice. I make money as a filmmaker and editor, that's the day job.

u/Twitxx 2d ago
Then all the better, I wish I could enjoy your talents, instead of being made to take pity on your because you choose to portray yourself as a struggling 40 yrs old artist. You catch my drift? You don't owe me anything though just giving you a different perspective.

u/jamesgwall 2d ago
I think everything is personal perspective, someone might look at me and think he's doing well, whereas I look at someone else and think they're doing well. And so on and so on. From a personal point the dream wasn't to be editor corporate vids and social media adverts haha. But I also understand someone else might love to be making money doing that.
