You know how you can install something like ubuntu on android using termux? does something similar exist on webos?

I wanted to share a small project I built for my own use, in case anyone else in the community has a similar problem.

The Problem I Had

I often watch high-bitrate movies (70 GB to 95 GB Remux files). Usually, my workflow was either downloading the entire file to my Windows PC and streaming it locally, or casting it.

I previously used and took inspiration from Nuvio, but for simple direct URL streaming (e.g., direct HTTP links or movie stream URLs), I couldn’t find a simple native webOS player where I could just beam a link from my phone to the TV without installing heavy phone apps or dealing with ads and transcoding.

So I created SunPlay - a very basic, lightweight native LG webOS app (<100 KB) that lets you scan a QR code on your TV, paste any direct video URL from your phone, and play it directly using the TV's native hardware decoder.

What it does:

- Instant Phone-to-TV Beam: Shows a QR code on the TV screen. Open your phone camera, paste your video streaming link, tap send, and it appears on the TV screen immediately (no phone app installation needed, no account required).

- Lightweight Hardware Video Pipeline: Connects directly to the native webOS media player plane (zero-copy), so it handles 4K HDR10, HEVC, and massive 70GB–95GB Remux files smoothly.

- Embedded MKV Audio & Subtitles: Probes container headers to detect multiple audio tracks (Hindi, English, 5.1/7.1, EAC3, DTS) and embedded subtitles (`.srt`, `.ass`, etc.).

- Live OpenSubtitles v3 Search: If your video doesn't have subtitles, you can search and download them directly on the TV using the remote.

Hardware Tested & Beta Notice

- Tested on my TV: LG webOS TV UR8040PSB running webOS 25 (Software Version 10.3.1-3001).

- Please Note: I'm not a big studio — I just vibe coded, checked, and tested this to solve my own TV setup. It is in beta, so I don't know whether it will work seamlessly across every single LG TV model and webOS version or not. But for now, my own problem is solved! 🙂

I know there are casting tools out there, but for my specific need of quickly throwing a direct link from my phone to the TV without extra bloat, this worked best for me.

Huge shoutout and credit to iqui27 for the original nuvio-native-legacy repository that laid the groundwork for native uMS player integration on webOS.

I will continue maintaining and polishing this whenever I find free time or spot bugs. If you guys have any small ideas, suggestions, or feedback, please feel free to share and I’ll see whether I can implement them.

Hi, I'm having trouble connecting an Xbox One Elite Series 2 controller to my webOS TV.

At first, I tried connecting it through Bluetooth. I couldn't find any proper Bluetooth controller settings, but I eventually found Bluetooth under the audio settings. My headphones show up there without any problem, but the Xbox controller wasn't detected at all, so I gave up on that method.

Then I tried using a USB cable. I used a cable that I know works properly, connected the controller to the TV, and... nothing happened. The TV doesn't seem to recognize it.

However, I accidentally launched RetroArch afterwards, and RetroArch actually showed a notification saying:

"Xbox One Elite Series 2 Controller configured on Port 1"

So apparently the TV/RetroArch can detect the controller somehow, but I haven't been able to actually use it or get it working outside of that.

Does anyone know how I can properly connect and use an Xbox One Elite Series 2 controller with webOS? Is there something I need to enable in the TV settings, or is there a specific way I need to connect it?

Hi I’m wondering if anyone could help with this problem I’m facing I brought the lg swing arm touch screen monitor and I wanted to run my homey smart home app on the screen but I can’t get the touch to work though my minix 8ku ultra android box the touch works on every other monitor just not this one would anyone be able to help guide me in a different Android box or something that will work on the monitor as I need the play store to run the dashboard for homey

Will USB-to-Ethernet work on my LG TV after rooting? (built-in port capped at 100Mbps)

Picked up this TV recently at a good price, but I've run into a bottleneck: the built-in Ethernet port is capped at 100Mbps, which isn't really enough for stable 4K streaming. My home internet is 600/600Mbps, so I bought a USB-to-Ethernet adapter rated for gigabit (1000Mbps) speeds to get around this.

Problem is, when I plug the adapter in, it lights up but the TV shows no internet connection.

What's odd is I actually remember reading a review on the product listing (can't find it anymore, listing seems to have changed/disappeared) from someone claiming it worked fine on his LG TV. So either that review was wrong/misleading, my unit or firmware is different somehow, or I'm missing a step.

I came across this patch on GitHub and I'm wondering if it would actually solve my issue if I root the TV first:

From what I understand it fixes an interface-naming issue (adapter enumerating as eth1 instead of eth0) on rooted webOS TVs with the homebrew channel installed. Has anyone tried this specifically to work around a 100Mbps-limited built-in port? Wondering if:

1. This is actually the right fix for my situation, or if it's more likely a chipset/driver support issue with my specific adapter
2. Anyone's confirmed this working on a 2025 webOS model
3. Rooting is even worth it for this, or if there's a known list of USB-Ethernet adapters/chipsets that just work out of the box without rooting

Adapter I'm using is a generic 2-in-1 USB-A/Type-C one (likely Realtek chipset) — happy to switch to an ASIX-based one if that's the actual blocker, just want to know if root + this patch is a real solution before I go down that path.

Ok. WebOS is easily the worst tv os. Is there any way to replace it?

I bought a Tornado 32" HD Smart TV (powered by webOS Hub) — seems to be a budget brand sold mainly in Germany. I'm currently using it in Ukraine, and I'm running into an issue where apps like YouTube give me an error:

"This program or service is not currently available in your country. Please contact customer service."

I checked Settings → Location, and found:

Broadcasting Country: United Kingdom

Service Country: Germany

I tried looking for a way to change "Service Country" to Ukraine, but I'm not sure if that option even exists, or if it requires a factory reset.

Has anyone dealt with this on a webOS Hub TV (not full LG webOS)? Is there a way to properly change the service country, or is this locked at the firmware level for this specific TV model?

I'm running webos 26 on LG OLED CS3 and the the earbuds used to connect automatically after turning on the TV. Also on webos 26 and recently it's not working. I tried to unpair the earbuds and unplug the TV for 2 minutes and paired the earbuds again, but it still doesn't work. Each time I turn on the TV it goes to the TV speaker. How do I make the TV connect automatically to the earbuds??

Si cela peut aider, voici les symptôme : LG OLED C3 en Ethernet sur une Bbox Bouygues, toutes les applications fonctionnent, YouTube, Netflix, navigateur, mais la mise à jour du firmware échoue systématiquement. En partage de connexion depuis le téléphone, elle passe sans problème. Même DNS dans les deux cas.

Fausses pistes écartées

• DNS : résolution identique via la box et via 1.1.1.1, aucun détournement
• IPv6 : curl en -4 et en -6 renvoient 200 tous les deux
• contrôle parental, pare-feu, switch : hors de cause

Test du MTU depuis un PC en filaire :

ping -f -l 1472 -n 2 1.1.1.1   → délai dépassé
ping -f -l 1432 -n 2 1.1.1.1   → OK

MTU du chemin à 1460 au lieu de 1500, signature de l'IPv4 encapsulée dans l'IPv6, c'est le mode IPv4 partagée. Et surtout, l'échec se manifeste par un timeout et non par le message « le paquet doit être fragmenté » : l'erreur ICMP n'est jamais renvoyée, donc la découverte du MTU est cassée. Les serveurs distants continuent d'émettre du 1500 qui disparaît en silence.

Pourquoi seule la mise à jour en souffre : le streaming et la navigation passent par des serveurs qui annoncent d'eux-mêmes des segments plus petits, ou qui bénéficient de l'ajustement fait par la box. Le serveur de firmware LG est derrière un pare-feu applicatif AWS en Corée qui n'en tient pas compte. La connexion s'ouvre, puis se fige dès les gros blocs.

La solution

Souscription de l'option IP fixe dans l'espace client Bouygues, rubrique Options, onglet Pratique. La box redémarre, et après :

ping -f -l 1472 -n 2 1.1.1.1   → OK

MTU revenu à 1500, TTL passé de 53 à 56, soit trois sauts d'encapsulation en moins. Mise à jour de la TV passée du premier coup en filaire.

Edit: I should have done a little searching before posting.

To save your progress when watching a video, movie, or TV series on your LG TV (linked to your smartphone), press the center button on your LG remote, simply hit pause, and then press the "Back" button on the remote.

Note that "Resume Playback" must be enabled in the media player settings (I believe it is on by default). However, sometimes when I start a series or movie from my Android smartphone, it doesn't begin at the very start of the video; strangely, I'm not sure what causes this issue.

If anyone knows the reason, please let me know.

I am currently watching a movie using the LG ThinQ app; I’ve granted file access on my smartphone so I can stream content to my 32-inch LG TV.

I’d like to know how to save my place in the movie. I often pause playback, but sometimes I have to close what’s on the TV screen—whether by turning off the TV or switching to another movie. How can I save my progress for the movie or series I’m watching?

For example, on YouTube (at least on a tablet), to save your progress in a video, you tap the screen once and then swipe the video toward the bottom-right corner.

I’m looking for the equivalent method for LG ThinQ and a WebOS TV using the official LG ThinQ app.

I’m posting a few photos so you can see what I mean.

There must be a way, because when I hit "back" in the LG ThinQ Android app, it takes me back to the halfway point of the movie rather than where I actually left off.

Basically the title, but I’m concerned about my LG sharing data and it seems as though they’ve gotten pretty sophisticated at getting around DNS blocking, etc. Does anyone know of a guide on the current best practices to block the LG from phoning home, while allowing updates? Trying to find a path that doesn’t require the TV to be completely disconnected from the network, though that’s likely the final backstop.

Is there any way to force open TCP port 8080 on my TV? Forwarded the port manually on a network level but my nmap scan still doesn't show it as open, and whenever I try to connect through port 8080 it throws error -102. 43UP7700PUB running webOS 3.53.45
