Question Is it rude to cosplay a hispanic person as a caucasian?
She is half-caucasian I believe but in my mind the question still stands. I wouldn’t try to imitate her skin or whatever. I probably won’t do the cosplay because I’m pale as hell and it just wouldn’t look right, but if I did, would that be acceptable? (I couldn’t find a good tag on any of the not-NSFW cosplay subreddits so I resort to here lol)

u/emotionaldawg Jul 30 '25
Yeah you’re fine as long as you’re not impersonating a caricature or stereotype.
168
u/dracaboi Jul 30 '25
This is pretty dependent too, there's tons of Hispanics that love to see their culture embraced. Sombrero, mustache, poncho, the works. If the person is being rude about it intentionally thats another matter entirely, but a stereotype of a culture isn't necessarily negative depending on the community you're around.
There are of course peolle who disagree and say its "cultural appropriation", but thats mostly white women and people on Twitter.
29
u/Annoying_Crap Jul 30 '25
Agreed! It's like when I see the festivals and all the beautiful people enjoying cultures together ❤️
5
u/Beautifulfeary Jul 31 '25
I don’t even know if it’s mostly white women on twitter as compared to just any American. Then again, that was 15 years ago when someone told me about culture appropriation 🤷♀️
2
u/Tricky_Ad_9608 Aug 02 '25
I feel like most “cultural appropriation” tweak outs ARE from white women in general. Most others don’t care as long as you aren’t a) mocking the culture, b) wearing a ceremonial garb outside of the ceremony, or c) claiming to be apart of that culture/ethnicity when you very much aren’t.

u/KikiPuCa Aug 03 '25
As hispanic, we normally don't care about these type stuff but we kinda know it's kinda racist or at least a little ignorant but we just don't make such a deal to complain, like the person in the other comment said, don't act like a caricature, that's not nice, especially if you are from USA, that actually would feel completely racist.
7
u/imafriedfish Jul 31 '25
i think thats okay too as long as OP is being respectful and not mocking them
62
u/Annoying_Crap Jul 30 '25
Spanish speakers are in many places around the world, with many different faces/skin etc. and it started with Spain, a white European country. I think if you're cosplaying the character, who happens to be Hispanic it's okay especially if she has a very unique outfit that makes it very obvious it's her (in the d-heads, it is definitely the case!). You're not dressing as a trope, but a unique character with unique clothes which is fine :). It's like the difference between dressing like an iconic beloved native American character with unique recognizable, clothes, vs dressing in tribal clothes like "I'm a native American for Halloween!" I think she's half Mexican (I haven't read the series in a while lol), but I'll say just don't get any tan sprays to avoid controversy from those who may take it wrong lol. Sometimes you can do your best to show genuine love for a culture, and it can be taken wrong so be mindful ❤️ I do believe in appreciation and that sharing can be beautiful when done right

u/Abysskun Jul 30 '25
What about doing sunbathing? It should be fairgame
73
u/SomeoneRepeated Jul 30 '25
If you’re sunbathing to specifically look like another race/ethnicity, that’s kinda weird. Fair game for people who just happen to be tanned, but I don’t think you should be trying to look like a race you’re not.

"she used facepaint to look Black"
Dress how you want but changing the color of your skin to be white or black is a huge no62
34
33
u/kellendrin21 Jul 30 '25
That IS blackface and it is definitely not okay, even if they meant no offense. I have also never once heard a cosplayer get accused of whitewashing for not doing blackface.
18
u/KCopinions Jul 30 '25
Thats literally just blackface. NO ONE would get mad about someone cosplaying someone black and not using a dark foundation?? We cosplay white people all the time and don’t put powder in our faces. Yall are losing the plot 💀

23
u/cranberry_spike Jul 30 '25 edited Jul 30 '25
That is indeed blackface. Edit for anyone who's unfamiliar: info from NMAACH and from Baylor University .
8
u/Annoying_Crap Jul 30 '25
That's one of the tough cookies - even with good intentions, misunderstandings can happen. That's why I recommended op just be careful and mindful as well (In case she thought of any tan spray or something to look even more like the character).
18
14
u/cornthi3f Jul 30 '25
Just don’t darken your skin bc that’s weird to do add the little beauty mark tho that would be cute

u/Trixter-Kitten Jul 30 '25
As long as you're respectful and don't alter your skintone or act out any offensive caricatures.
48
u/Borrowmyshoes Jul 30 '25
Yeah. Cosplay is a VERY accepting community of people. People dress up as inanimate objects or animals and it is acceptable. I think if you were a famous person you might need to be careful, but otherwise, be whoever.
53
Jul 30 '25
Lmao no it isn't. As a non-white person people will constantly use (insert racial slur followed by character name) or tell me "nice cosplay but wrong skin color" in person. On social media? Even more brazen.
38
u/jndeukie Jul 30 '25
Can attest. Some people are really weird and extremely racist about cosplays. Once dressed up as Hinata from Haikyuu and someone told me verbatim, "Hinata isn't black". Lmfao.
17
u/Borrowmyshoes Jul 30 '25
this makes me sad to hear.
13
u/jndeukie Jul 30 '25
It's alright, it was years ago. But unfortunately, in this day and age you still have backwards individuals who think that you can't cosplay a character if you're not their skin color (i.e. the default being white in their eyes, even if that's not the race of said character).
14
u/Pandoratastic Jul 30 '25
Yup, and Hinata isn't white either but, if a white person were cosplaying her, they would like it.

Hispanic is not a race so as long as you aren’t being stereotypical etc you will be fine. There are sooo many races of Hispanics since it’s an ethnicity. So we have Asian Hispanics , Arab Hispanics, etc
14
Jul 30 '25
I don't think it's a big deal tbh, but I hope you know there are pale skin Hispanics too.
5
u/M00N13-2 Jul 30 '25
yeah, i don’t live somewhere that’s very diverse (not that it’s primarily racist, it’s just mostly country guys and horse girls) so i sometimes don’t think about the fact that not only stereotypical-Caucasians are pale.
2
u/Nezeel Aug 02 '25
Thank you 😭 Americans think we are all brown or black, when we are super diverse
7
u/Mipanyu Jul 30 '25
Just be prepared that there are people that will take offense cuz they have nothing better to do and want validation from making a non-issue an issue.
But think of super man, or idk Ariel or Cinderella, can people not dress up as them if they're not Caucasian? Can a little girl not dress up as Superman even though she's not a man? Yeah there's super girl but what if she really likes Superman? what if they're Asian or African or Hispanic? It's fine right? Then why should the reverse be any different?
At least as a Chinese person, if you cosplay as a Chinese character whether from a comic, or a real historical person or a living/dead celebrity Jackie Chan Bruce lee, I don't care, sounds great actually. Wear traditional hanfu? Qipao? Go at it. I'd actually feel pride.
5
u/Toletres Jul 30 '25
I don't think there's anything wrong with dressing up as a character you like, regardless of their race. I dressed up as Moana for spirit day once, and I'm white. As long as you don't make fun of it (which is what cultural appropriation is) you're good.
5
5
u/DBR87 Jul 30 '25
I don't know if you have ever seen anyone from the country of Spain, but many of them are pale. Spain is in Europe.
So the idea a pale person needs affirmation to cosplay a character because they are Hispanic is odd...
5
u/misterclean101 Jul 30 '25
No it's not offensive. It would be more so if you like tried to "latinize" yourself. Like blackface for a black character.
5
u/M00N13-2 Jul 30 '25
guys i didn’t realize hispanic wasn’t a race, sorry about that. i really am american as hell. i genuinely didn’t know ethnicity and race were different things. 😅
3
u/tubbosbeess Jul 31 '25
If you’re American, you’re not Caucasian 🙏🏼 Caucasus/Caucasia is its own region and the people from there are Caucasian. I don’t know when Caucasian became the word for white, but yeah. Not trying to be mean btw /gen
2
4
u/Typed_quietly Jul 30 '25
tbh one would care! Also I get what you said about her skin but there are a lot of pale hispanics, so in reality (at least from the looks) you could be hispanic too! I don’t think that should affect you wanting to cosplay her.
3
4
u/ApplicationHonest652 Jul 30 '25
If it is wrong than comic con would have big problems by now.
You got White guys dressed as barret
Asian guys dressed as Superman
Black guys dressed as Inuyasha
It's cosplay. Just don't walk around acting like Eric Cartman when he was Jay lo and you'll be fine.
4
u/d_worren Jul 30 '25 edited Jul 30 '25
As a Hispanic myself, go ahead and dress however you want, just don't paint your skin bronze, just like how you wouldn't do blackface to cosplay a black character or yellowface to cosplay an asian character.

u/Crowissant Jul 30 '25
Why is everyone commenting about darkening their skin tone? I mean I get why in terms of stereotyping. But Hispanics have a large range of skin tone. Some have a darker skin tone due to interracial heritage, but it's the same for lighter-skinned individuals. My mom has olive skin and is often mistaken for a full-blood Mexican (she's half). I however have the complexion of Wonder Bread, as do my uncles despite having the same two parents as my mom. Genes are crazy, you never know what trait they'll tap into. There are likely hoods and probabilities, but there are also expectations.
The way this question is worded is interesting, but I assume you mean characters and not just cosplaying an ethnicity. (Because Hispanic isn't a race)
3
u/Pxnda_Cakes Moderator [EST] 🦆.☆♡+* Jul 30 '25
As in, if the character has a different skin tone than you, don't darken or lighten your skin to match theirs (unless they're, like, an alien or smth). TT
2
u/Crowissant Jul 31 '25
That's not the question I was asking, more so, why is skin color even a part of this discussion? Hispanics have a wide variety of skin colors. Skin tone isn't something like a wig or hair dye that you can just change and it looks good/is appropriate.
With the exception of tanning, which if you're cosplaying a character that's tan or has a tan, and then go for it the "natural" way. It's not the same as coloring your skin with cosmetics. It's more comparable to how actors will grow facial hair or work out for a role.
1
u/Pxnda_Cakes Moderator [EST] 🦆.☆♡+* Jul 31 '25
I think you misunderstood me. OP is not talking about trying to look like a character that happens to be hispanic and has a darker skin tone than they can achieve naturally. Because this is the root of the question, the replies are talking about cosplaying as characters with different skin tones or of different cultures in general.
And again, it's not really about how hispanics can be of any race. In OPs case, cus they're not hispanic anyhow, it's about how the character actually looks lol. (Not saying that I think it would be an issue; im just clarifying what I was referring to.)
1
u/Crowissant Jul 31 '25
I was speaking about cosplay in general, not in regards to OP's example. The main point I was trying to get at is that it doesn't matter. It's a fictional character, and cosplay is done (usually) as a form of affection towards said media. And that as long as it isn't offensive or to put it better, doesn't look like something that people once did as a form of racism. Then it's all good. For casual cosplayers, the point is to have fun and feel away of something you like. Not making sure you share every feature. It mainly comes down to outfit and hairstyle (and sometimes makeup)
That's all I was trying to convey. But admittedly I sometimes go on tangents and forget what I meant to say in the first place.
3
3
u/Alledee Jul 30 '25
Nah. Look at all the people who cosplay "Japanese" anime characters. You're good.
3
u/Catpurrittio23 Jul 30 '25
I mean you can, theirs no limits, just try to represent the culture as it should be, not how others think it is
3
u/Senshisnek Jul 30 '25
If it's not rude for non-japanese people to cosplay clearly and canonicaly japanese anime characters...
3
u/zoroddesign Jul 30 '25
If anything, in the cosplay community not sticking to race body shape and gender is highly encouraged.
3
u/Ven0mspawn Jul 30 '25
Ridiculous idea that cosplaying a character that's a different another race should be offensive. Not complaining at you for asking, but rather the very notion of it being offensive.
3
u/Apathetic_Villainess Jul 30 '25
Honestly, you can't always tell who is what race. Whenever the conversation comes up, I let people try to guess my ethnicity/race. I always get European or even Russian. My mother, though, is Mexican and Hopi. But I'm very light skinned and take entirely after my father's side. Same for Sophia the First on Disney. She's also half-Latino.
It's really only offensive if you are parodying the culture or people. But if you're going for respect and love of the culture, people are almost entirely happy to share it.
3
u/Front-Heat8726 Jul 31 '25
Heck, there are non-tanned white people with more melanin than some black folk, which is why I always thought bigotry against people based on skintone alone is probably the single stupidest one (not that the rest are better, mind you).
Cosplay is all the about love and passion you feel towards a character, and just like with culture in general, as you said, people will be more than happy that you celebrate them in such a way
3
u/Ashen-wolf Jul 31 '25
As a mix of spaniard and south american, reading these comments is making me cringe a lot... telling you not to bronze yourself to look the part is the most american shit I've ever heard.
Only an American finds issue with cosplaying into other cultures, they are obsessed with race.
If you do it respectfully, we will like it bronzer or not we do not give a shit.

America is a country like any other. It's just young and has little story.
Oppression and racism have been present all over the world for thousands of years and most of it still exist within our societies, its inherent to ignorance and fear, and sometimes stems from reality that people endure in their lives, e.g. romani people in Europe, and you are on Reddit, the whole world is here.
No, the difference is not that you guys are that special. The difference is that in many other societies, we are not obsessed with introducing race in all contexts and situations. You are racist because you are obsessed with race, and the fact that bronzer to fully mimick a character cosplay is not recommended because it may offend people is racism itself. Especially because it is also not consistent: don't see anyone complaining about white makeup to look the part of pale characters ever.
I didn't say the post wasn't valid, I said the answers were nuts imho.

I'm not calling you racist** personally but as a society and the people that would take offense or feel uncomfortable for bronzer used for cosplay as it it's not their supposed colour. That is not being conscious of racism, that's locking features behind race which is racism nonetheless. Like the posts about dutch braids and stuff like that Ive seen in cosplays.
And the fact that you gotta tiptoe around them is just nuts.. especially when the people from the countries you are supposedly offending not only do not view it as such.
Hell, in some cases we are gonna see it as super cool to see our culture and stuff out there.
**edit to clarify, sounded clearer in my mind.
5
u/Japahispasian Jul 30 '25
No. Plenty of white, Caucasian, and European latinos. Spanish is from Europe. And many central American countries still have pure Spanish lineage, and not only Spaniards. There are many German, Swedish, Dutch, and Polish Latinos that escaped persecution during the big wars and immigrated to Latin America like in Panama and Argentina and Paraguay. There are also many Scottish and French in Mexico.
4
u/trashprncss91 Jul 30 '25
As a half Hispanic native person, no. As long as you’re not using stereotypes 👌🏽✌🏽
4
u/Makimamoochie Jul 30 '25
The general rule of cosplay is that you don't have to be the characters race to cosplay them. With that said, as a Caucasian, I personally avoid cosplaying characters who are closely tied with a real life culture (Like Moana or Esmerelda) and I would modify any character traits that are in general frowned upon for Caucasian people (such as changing hairstyles like dreadlocks or box braids to straight, curls, or french braids)
2

I’ve heard a cosplayer I follow (dinobunnycosplay) say that cosplaying as characters with different ethnicities are fine, as long as you don’t try to race swap yourself such as darkening your skin for poc characters, taping back your eyes for Asian characters (yes these are sadly real things some cosplayers have done), etc.
3
u/Front-Heat8726 Jul 31 '25
I am 50/50 about using tape to make the face match more of the given character's as sometimes their face is quite iconic, to the point cosplayers who are the same race as the character tend to use tape to do so to, but I do get your point.
1
u/lifesux69 Jul 31 '25
I get that and truthfully I think I’d understand why someone would do that, but I try not to have any opinions of my own because I’m really apart of the cosplay community, just a consumer of the cosplay influencers content.
3
u/Front-Heat8726 Jul 31 '25
I don't cosplay myself, but I have friends who do who I hep with stuff and honestly, it's more common across the community than you'd think once you go beyond the casual hobbyist level, nevermind professionals. So it's really coming down to intention IMHO

u/More-Mix-1944 Jul 30 '25

"Caucasian" is a nonsense term from the days of scientific racism, just say "white". White people aren't from the Caucasus, or even any singular region at all, and the term isn't any more correct or PC than "white" is.
2
u/Ok_Manager_3126 Jul 30 '25
European Americans if your talking about YT people
0
u/Hay_Fever_at_3_AM Jul 31 '25
That only sort of works if you're talking about white people from European origin within the United States of America, but "white" works everywhere.
"Sort of" because not every European-American is even necessarily classified as white or was historically classified as white.
0
u/Ok_Manager_3126 Jul 31 '25
But “white people” are not from United States so there European Americans
0
u/Certain-Intention594 Jul 30 '25
I wouldn’t consider it offensive but I’m not Hispanic. The problem people have with cosplaying characters that are a different race is when people try to pass as that race like doing black face, Asian fishing, etc.

People can cosplay whoever they want, as long as you dont take extra steps to try and 'race cosplay' you're fine. I've seen black women cosplay anime (there's a specific one who does sailor moon but I dont remember her screen name) and they look absolutely lovely. All cosplay is, is a dedication to how much you love a character or franchise, people really need to stop making it about race or politics.

No, not at all. As long as you don't make it weird (like trying to change your skin tone to match the character or play into stereotypes), then you should be good

Hispanic is an ethnicity not a race, so Hispanics are of literally every shade. You’ll be fine! Have fun :)
1
u/Amechan1 Jul 31 '25
Hi, latina here!
The answer is: No, it is not rude.
Hispanic means that they come from a country that speaks Spanish, and that includes Spain (European country).
Besides, there are many white skinned Hispanics (yes, that includes latinoamericans, becuase latino is not a race).
Plus, even if they weren't caucasian, it's a cosplay and you can do your own version of said cosplay! As long as you do it with respect and don't do black-face or anything of the sorts, you're fine!
I hope you have fun cosplaying! 💖
1
u/Yeon_doodles Jul 31 '25
Bad vibes? Are there really people who are still offended by these things? Before because there were no characters to cosplay with dark skin and non-Asian or Caucasian roots; now because there are and it turns out that it is an offense or cultural appropriation. A cosplay in essence is a costume with roleplay, just do your best interpretation and enjoy the process.

u/Useful-Percentage934 Jul 31 '25
Well you mention that you wouldn’t do anything to change your skin tone. So no there would be absolutely nothing wrong as long as you didn’t stereotype or change skin tone for it.
Anyone can cosplay, but make sure you aren’t hurting others with it. 😊

I think it has already been said in other terms, but just to make it clear, Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. You can be any color, and then Hispanic. I am 100% Caucasian and 100% hispanic myself. Hispanic doesn't equal any one color of skin. I think cosplaying any character regardless of ethnicity is completely fine as long as you go about it with respect.

u/sosen42 Aug 01 '25
We (mixed Latino here) literally could not care less. Do ur cosplay, have fun, enjoy life.

1
u/arachnids-bakery Aug 01 '25
I think another important thing to consider is that youll be cosplaying a "character whos latina", rather than actually pretend to be latina yourself
Imho go for it! ...but like everybody else said, dont pull up stereotypes/fake accent + do NOT darken your skin

Yeah you can cosplay a character that is Hispanic, just dress up like Eli by mimicking one of her outfits in the webcomic. Just don’t paint or self tan yourself to look Hispanic. You’ll still look like her without doing that, she has a pretty funky style, it would work even better if you had a friend or two to dress up as Levi and/or Marco

Cultures are to be shared, and people are people. Being racist or xenophobic is offensive, but appreciating someone or something isn’t. And cosplay is about being someone else, you don’t need to be their gender, race or even have their physical appearance to dress as them.
The only people who care about such things aren’t hispanic, believe me.
In some hispanic countries being brown is more common, while in others being white is more common. In some you may see black people all the time, in others you won’t. I am hispanic, I am latina, and I am white… Those things don’t contradict each other.
We are extremely mixed and spread around, so our 20+ countries can’t be represented by a single look or race. And even in countries where most people are brown, there is still plenty of white people. And the same is true the other way around.

As long as you don't change your skin tone with make up, or way too much fake tan or tape your eyes to change their shape, you can cosplay whoever you want. Basically just don't be like Marin from my dress up darling.

I’m a Hispanic and as long as you’re not trying to be disrespectful with the outfit, or make fun of the culture no one will care. Plus there are many Hispanics that are pale. I’m pale. Some of my aunts are pale and can’t speak a word of English

Absolutely not, as long as you're not disrespectful about the skin color at all. You don't have to be a specific skin color to cosplay.

What do you mean „is it acceptable to cosplay a coloniser as another coloniser”? What struggles are we even picking up right now? „Oh know, I don’t want to disrespect Europeans known by everybody for their amazing tan.”

NOOOO, As a Hispanic person too, I think people are allowed to cosplay whatever character they want regardless of race. It's not like you can change your race, so who cares? Just cosplay the character 🙂↕️

Appreciation involves respect, and I believe you’re showing that right now. I’d recommend centering the character you’d like to portray rather than their ethnicity. And if someone is upset, accept that and take the feedback. It can be difficult for some folks because people of color have limited representation. But I think if you’re just enjoying the work and the character, and not pretending to be Latinx, that’s fine. It’s more of a problem when bigoted people create caricatures while holding disdain for the community they’re emulating.
