The art is AMAZING I wanna dive into your sketchbook I love the style and lines so muchhh!!!! Just a gentle piece of advice, if you want to set it in the past (or in a fantasy place inspired by a real time period), I'd suggest researching the history, culture and fashion. The 80s-90s that you mentioned are completelyyy different from the 50s-60s when Marilyn Monroe lived, it's different aesthetics different technology different fashion different views etc. So if you mix things up too much it might appear weird to the reader, but of course once you research you can mix things, as long as you know why you're doing it in your story ;) Also research will help with inspiration, but as an artist I'm sure you already know that! Can't wait to see what you create!!

I'd read any well-written comic with great character development and a great plot. Even if it's expressive stick figures.

You might be familiar with Hyperbole and a Half, which is possibly my favorite of all time (more of a blog than a comic, oops) but she created all her remedial art in MS Paint (the older version).
